  1. It's horsing out right now ( boat talk for heavy winds ) over here in CNJ. Real gale type stuff. BIL wants to fry a turkey outside. Ok, then.
  2. It wasn't that bad out, I went for a walk outside this morning and the winds had backed off a lot from the night before. Most party boats ( they do sail on Thanksgiving ) had canceled due to gale force winds. I would normally walk in the mall on such a cold windy day but it is closed this morning. So I bundled up and it really wasn't that bad. Temps weren't bitter and wind wasn't biting. I was just outside poking around with nothing other than a flannel shirt ( flannel lined pants though ) and it wasn't bad at all. Had it continued like it had been it would have been a different story, but this kinda wind is tolerable right now. I just saw that there was a gust of 50 last night in NJ.
  3. Same to you and yours Anthony. Got some nieces and nephews up from Colombia who have never seen snow ( well, except on mountaintops ) would be nice to see something.
  4. There be fish big enough to swallow ye whole out there, skipper ( well, maybe not whole, but a big thresher shark scared the pants off me two weeks ago ).
  5. They didn't bother to treat out here. We had some flurries around noon, that was all. Yesterday was such a nice day and I was off but blew off a fishing trip. Fishing was excellent, with one boat catching and releasing a hundred striped bass. No real big fish, but that is actually a good sign, to see the smaller ones ( which are still averaging 24-26 in ). I was warned it will get bitter cold and I should try to get in a trip before the sea temps plummet, but I was tired. Early mornings get tough when you get into your 50's; you're awake but your limbs are too sore to move, sort of like the Tin Man....anyway, runoff, yeah, bad for the environment, bad for the bay. But there is less garbage and sewage than there used to be.
  6. KNow what's sobering to me? THe last 30 winters includes 1990-91....where did the time go? Was it really 30 years ago when West Germany won the World Cup, against Argentina, with the best player in the world, Maradona? And none of us knew because we didn't know what the World Cup was, or that the USA had played for the first time in 40 years, or that we were going to host in 94? And that those teams would be better than the one we have now? Was Silence of the Lambs that long ago, the first horror movie to win an Oscar for best picture? I'll say this, in 1990-91, we hadn't seen a snow storm of any consequence several years....which is why 94 was such a shock to the system. I just commented to my son after reading the winter outlook from NOAA, seems every year they are calling for above average in these parts....
  7. ALways when I have the week off in early Nov, I hope to get out and do some coastal fishing. In 30 years, the weather has been good maybe 3 times.....seriously. I'm thinking about going south this time, maybe Lake Marion in SC.
  8. Problem is ski, it's not warm or nice enough for the other activities I enjoy, and not cold enough for winter activities. I am starting to think at in SC or GA I can fish all winter in the lakes, no issues with coastal storms throwing up a violent sea and so on. Never thought I'd be in that camp, but I'm starting to feel that way. And no watching for snow either, since it is a rare occurence....
  9. Nov 1990 was very warm, we may have gotten there if anyone cares to look it up
  10. That's a pretty substantial sea right in the harbor...jeez.
  11. I know, it has been extremely depressing and has cost the sport fishing industry probably in the millions. But at least you guys are getting something out of it; this kind of disruption for this long is really unusual. Mother nature doing her thing again.....
  12. Pretty much par for the course around here....only my area manages to miss by being too far east sometimes too. Not a big fan of rain or wind so don't care, and just wish this system would go away already. I was outside with a contractor today and my hands got cold like it was late Nov....
  13. Just west of Raritan Bay here, did not see much heavy rain at all. If this had been snow it would have been another instance where I wasn't seeing much but people here would be telling me I'm wrong....
  14. You had some breaks in between....this has been relentless.
  15. Tell it to the captains who are spending most of the prime fall fishing season tied to the dock due to horrid winds.....sunny dry and calm is one thing, repeated 20-30 out of the south and northeast, rain or no, is ruining the whole season. Hope we don't have this pattern in the winter, where the precip avoids us.
  16. It's a nightmare for anglers and boaters, especially if you get seasick. Was off Breezy Point a few weeks ago and got the dry heaves, despite taking medication. One thing our fisheries regulators fail to understand is that anglers can't always get to the fish. We may only get a few days here and there where conditions are favorable. And then we are expected to throw all the fish back for....what? Conservation? No, these very fish are caught by commercial netters anyway. It's why I do more lake fishing these days. As for this one, it will send the fish packing for offshore early. We will be stuck fishing inshore for striped bass ( which are again declining ) that we won't be able to keep anyway. ( I actually don't keep them, or even fish much for them ).
  17. The seas are dreadful with 10-15 foot rollers being forecast and gale force east winds. Can't remember such a run of bad conditions this time of year.
  18. I'll wait for December thanks. Still waiting for the seas to calm down....waiting...waiting....thoughts turning to retirement.
  19. Been nothing but swells on the ocean punctuated by rough seas; can't get out to the fish. of course the weather will cool and the fish will move out of range now. For the first time, thinking about moving south and living near a lake. Winter really is too long here, even if it doesn't always seem that way.
  20. Great. Then it will disappear in December and not return again til April.....
  21. ALways a little sad to see the seasons change, but I prefer the fall weather to summer. The long wet, cold winters are starting to wear on me; it doesn't snow enough in my parts to make winter sports possible, and isn't warm enough for things like fishing. Never thought I'd say it, but am looking to retire where the fishing season is longer.
  22. Nothing but some light drizzle here. And that's only intermittent; not enough to keep the streets wet.
  23. Yes, which makes dismal wet winters seem longer, if followed by dismal wet springs, hence people complaining. It has been tough for gardeners and farmers this year, and part of the rivers used to transport grain are too high and barges can't get through, leaving crops to rot. Among other problems. And the mosquitos, my God, they are vicious this year. That's one species that climate change could make even worse.
  24. We never got the big storms here, and for two days I skipped fishing trips waiting for the bad weather, which never came. Unfortunately we have an easterly flow now, not good for boating and fishing, at least in the ocean. Meh, fishing has sucked anyway, but we were hoping for some porgies to show up. They haven't. Can feel the humidity starting to build up again.
