  1. Ehh, a lot cloudier than expected, so I was wrong. Temps were off to the races earlier with sunshine, we would’ve easily passed the lower 50’s had it remained sunny.
  2. Wouldn’t surprise me if today’s “warmth” over performs in some spots. Already 48 here with the sun partially obscured by clouds, forecast is 52.
  3. 24 this morning. Lows colder than the forecast has been the theme with this recent cold weather. Forecast was 27.
  4. 40 here, high was 43, today was an instant reminder of how much I hate winter/cold.
  5. Next week looks like something straight out of January. Hard to believe it was in the 90’s just a few weeks ago.
  6. We sit at both the northern and southern ranges for a lot of plant species. No one pays attention to native plants so it all looks the same, but the juxtaposition of northern and southern plant species is interesting if you know or can identify what it is you’re looking at.
  7. They already do survive up here. I took both of these in Manhattan back in August: Windmill Palm: (tolerates down to 5°F) Dwarf Palmetto: (tolerates below 0°F) The most cold tolerant palm though is the Needle Palm, that thing can take -10°F, there was one growing at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden since the 1960’s until they removed it like 2 years ago as part of a redesign. It’s native to the Southeast (along with the Dwarf Palmetto) and given its cold tolerance it’s been theorized that its native range once included areas further north and that it was only pushed south due to the glacial maximums.
  8. Governor’s an idiot. I mean, it’s good that he acknowledges climate change, but this sort of stuff is fuel for the denialist types.
  9. Have we ever seen a major hurricane stay in one spot for as long as this one has? This is basically Dorian right now:
  10. My only ice storm memory is of the Jan 1999 ice storm in the DC area, it was serious, the landscape looked very alien, all trees and power lines sagged in ways I’d never seen (and still haven't seen again), I recall one power line encased in thick ice dangling right in front of the window just a few feet away. This event was also my earliest weather memory.
  11. I hit 105 in Queens, highest temperature I’ve ever experienced. Newark (and maybe LGA) is definitely going to hit 110 one of these days. Old Bridge, NJ hit 110 back in 1936.
  12. I felt it, I thought I was off balance initially but I noticed clothes hangers swaying back and forth. Swaying not nearly as noticeable as the 2011 quake, that was enough to wake me up out of my sleep.
  13. The sheer amount of green leaves left is astonishing. The landscape is still 50%+ green in many spots and we’re in the second half of November.
  14. I super-hate early sunsets, we’re too far east in this time zone. It’d be nice if we could keep Eastern Daylight Time year round, but the U.S. government doesn’t allow year round DST, only opting out of DST. Making the switch to Atlantic Standard Time year round would solve that problem, multiple New England states have recently proposed switching.
  15. It feels like I haven’t looked at a radar since Maria made landfall in PR. I couldn’t even remember where the RadarScope app was located on my phone’s home screen.
  16. I’m legitimately cold. It’d be nice if the sun came out.
  17. So weird seeing people riding jet skis in October.
  18. The universe is certainly making up for that lackluster spring and summer. I’m not mad at all.
  19. Am I the only one that hit 90 yesterday before everything went downhill? I noticed some wunderground stations did as well, however it's still strange.
