  1. I was hearing a lot of the "we feel like it doesn't snow much anymore" from folks on my FB page - so I updated some of the analysis and charts on snowfalls for the Philly burbs of Chester County PA. The data says the last 3 decades including just the 1st 2 seasons of the 2020's have all averaged above average snowfall. (see graph below showing the average snowfall by decade since the 1890's. Or what about we don't get any large snowstorms anymore? So how about a breakdown of significant (6"+) large (10"+) Major (15"+) and historic (20"+) snowstorms by decade And finally the thought that we don't get any big snow seasons anymore? Well below are the top 20 Snow Seasons - 3 of the Top 10 and 6 of the Top 20 snowiest winters have all happened since the year 2000
  2. GFS is 2 small events (Saturday and Monday) - others Sunday night into Monday
  3. A very mild but somewhat wet week on tap across Chester County PA. Temps will run well above normal with temperatures not falling back below freezing until Friday night into Saturday AM. We should get back to near normal January temps by the weekend. Rain should move in this morning and end later this PM. Another round of rain arrives by tomorrow PM and should end by Friday AM. The record high for today is 63 degrees from 1997. Our record low is 1 below zero set in 1918. Daily rain record is 2.07" from 1936. Snow record for the day is the 2.7" from 1989.
  4. So this is the 23rd time in 129 years of recorded Chester County history that we have received less than 1" of snow through December. In only 3 of those 23 instances have we ended up with above normal snowfall for the remainder of the snow season. So the odds of above normal snowfall looks low. However, as we know our 3 snowiest months on average still lie ahead of us. So don't put away those snow blowers just yet...
  5. Our mild weather will continue through Thursday before a turn to more typical January temperatures by Friday. With the mild temps will come rain chances starting later tonight till Thursday morning and then again Thursday night into Friday. The record high for today is 62 set in 2000. The record low is 7 below zero from 1899. The daily rain record is 2.09" from 1948. Record daily snow is the 9" that fell today in 1925.

  7. Imagine if this kind of January weather occurred today??
  8. Sorry to hear you are both (Steve and Birds) not feeling well. Take care and get better soon! Paul
  9. Happy New Year's Eve to all! A little foggy to start the final day of 2022. Rain chances will be increasing during today and into the evening. Sun returns for New Years Day and Monday before showers return for mid week. Wednesday looks to be the warmest day of the week with temps more than 20 degrees above normal in the low 60's. Wednesday's record high looks a bit out of reach for Chester County (67 degrees from 1950) but spots toward Philly may approach records highs. We should see a return to more typical January temperatures by the end of the week. The record high for today is 64 degrees set in 1965. The record low is 5 below zero from 1917. Daily rain record is the 1.68" that fell in 1906. Daily snow mark is the 5.0" that fell today in 1970.
  10. Those now very chilly ocean water temps 44 degrees are now impacting the NJ shore points...at the AC Airport it is currently 64 degrees while here on the barrier islands...in Sea Isle City NJ we are sitting at 48.2 degrees.
  11. Another beauty of a day coming up today with temps rising into the upper 50's - normal high temps are around 40 degrees. Rain moves in tomorrow afternoon and will last through New Years Eve. Sunday and Monday look to continue warm and sunny with temps in the low to mid 50's, More showers arrive on Tuesday night and Wednesday. We look to chill back closer to normal by Thursday and into next weekend. The record high for today is 63 degrees set way back in 1898. The record low is 9 below zero set in 1917. The daily rain record is 1.56" from 1912. Our daily snow record is the 3.8" that fell just 5 years ago in 2017.
  12. A beautiful and mild next couple of days with temps over 10 degrees above normal in the low 50's. By the middle of next week we may see high temps in the lower 60's. There will be rain chances both Saturday and again in the Tuesday - Wednesday period. By the end of next week temps look to cool to closer to normal. There are even some models hinting at an east coast storm that depending on the track could give some snow here in the Northeast US. The record high for today is 73 degrees from 1984. The record low is minus 2 degrees from 1917. Daily rain record is the 3.48" in 1901. The record daily snow was the 4.7" that fell today in 1935.
  13. Today will see our first above freezing reading since last Friday morning. The next 3 days look great with plenty of sun and temps warming into the low 50's by Friday. Shower chances increase by later Friday night into Saturday. The upcoming warming trend appears to be a fairly brief break before more typical seasonably cold January returns by as early as next Friday. The record high for today is 66 degrees set way back in 1907. The record low is 0 set in 1933. Record rainfall is the 1.76" from 1967. Daily snow record was the 2.6" set in 1990.
  14. Some spots in Chester County will have a chance to get above freezing for the 1st time since 11:40 am on the 23rd. I saw some local neighbors out on their pond playing a little ice hockey yesterday. However, ice hockey may become more difficult as we move toward the final few days of 2021. We look to see temps warming to above normal starting tomorrow and look to stay that way for likely the next 13 or so days. The models are starting to hint at another return to colder somewhere around the 10th of the New Year. It does look like some rain is likely on NY Eve into NY Day. The record high for today is 62 degrees from 1949. The record low is 3 degrees below zero today in 1914. The daily rain record is the 1.50" from 1930. Daily snow record is the 4.7" that fell on this date in 1935.
  15. We finished the combined Christmas Eve and Day holiday as the 3rd coldest in history behind only 1983 and 1980. Today should be our last below freezing day with our warming trend getting underway. We should stay dry till New Year's Eve. There is no sign of any cold weather returning till at least the 2nd week of January. The record high for today is 67 degrees set in 1964. The record low is 2 below zero from 1980. The record precipitation is the 2.50" from 1909. That is also the record daily snow for the date as an additional 25" of snow fell on this date bringing the 2 day storm total to a whopping 38".
  16. Merry Christmas to all! Yesterday was the coldest Christmas Eve average temperature since records began in 1894. The average temperature was 7.9 degrees beating the old record of 9.5 set in 1983. Our AM low here in East Nantmeal was 11.2 degrees this is the coldest Christmas low temperature since the 10 degree reading in 1989. We should see below normal temperatures continue through Tuesday. A warming trend will get under way with temps reaching well into the 50's to near 60 by New Year's Day. That warming trend should carry us through the first week of the new year. There are signs of colder weather returning again around the 8th of January. The record high today is 67 from 1964. The record low is 6 below zero set in 1980. Record precipitation is the 1.93" that fell in 2002...of note the rain turned to snow that Christmas morning with 5.8" of snow falling. The record snowfall on Christmas Day is the 13" that fell in 1909 of note that was just the beginning of a 2 day blizzard that would see another 25" falling the day after Christmas for a storm total of 38" that was the 2nd greatest snowstorm in Chester County history - behind only the 45.3" of snow that fell during the February Blizzard of 1899 ending on February 14, 1899.
  17. Merry Christmas to all the great folks on this site! It looks like we ended up with a high of 13.0 - it looks like we will best by 1.6 degrees for the coldest ever average Christmas Eve temperature on record....an impressive record for sure. It has been tough to break daily cold records during our current warmer cycle. All the best! Paul
  18. Our low this morning reached 2.8 above zero here in East Nantmeal. This is the coldest reading since the 4.8 degrees below zero back on January 31, 2019. It is also the coldest December reading since the 1 degree above zero reading on December 22, 1989. A pretty incredible stat about the range of temperatures yesterday. There was a 50.9 degree difference between our high temperature of 55.4 and low of 4.5 degrees. That is the 2nd largest temperature range ever over 47,108 days or 129 years since record keeping began in Chester County on January 1, 1894. The largest range in temps ever was the 52 degree range we experienced on April 3, 1967 with a high of 81 degrees and a low of 29 degrees. If the forecast high today of only 14 degrees is realized this will end up being the coldest daily average (+8.4 degrees) Christmas Eve in Chester County history. The current coldest Christmas Eve was the 9.5 average temp ( Hi 20 Lo -1) from 1983. The record high for today is 68.5 degrees from 2015. The record low is the 2 below zero from 1980. Daily rain record is the 1.63" from 1986. The daily snow record is the 20.0" that fell today in 1966. That 2 day snowstorm ended giving us 21.2" of snow that included frequent thunder and lightning along with the heavy snow on Christmas Eve.
  19. We ended up with 1.27" of liquid equivalent and 0.5" of snow. Of note the current temp is 15.6 - despite the warmest temperature so far this December at 2:51am today we have also already recorded the coldest reading of December so far.
  20. We finished with 0.5" of snow here in East Nantmeal. Our 2nd snow "event" of the season. We now stand at an impressive 0.8" of snow for the season! Temp is down to 24.9 on VP and 23.2 on Tempest on the roof

  23. Ground getting white - temp is wrong on camera program we are down to 32.4
