E PA/NJ/DE Spring 2023 OBS Thread
ChescoWx replied to Hurricane Agnes's topic in Philadelphia Region
I noticed that our local channel 6 weather team over in Philadelphia has been posting how since 1970 springs are getting warmer....as is always the case they only seem to look at since 1970. Why is that a problem? A quick look (see below) at the 3 major NWS COOP sites here in Chester County PA show that by starting the analysis in 1970 the data is clearly skewed because overall the 1960's was the decade with the coolest readings. The warmest springs here in Chester County averaged over the 3 long term sites actually occurred back in the 1940's. Only focusing on 50 years does not prove a trend. -
Yesterday was our warmest day since the 84.3 degree reading back on September 4th. We should be a couple degrees cooler today with clouds increasing later. Some showers toward morning tomorrow ending by late Saturday night. Some spots could see 0.25" to 0.50" of much needed rain for the county farmers and green thumbs! Records for today: High 88 (1941) / Low 22 (1940) / Rain 2.28" (1970) / Snow 2.5" (1923)

We set another record low maximum this morning with a low of only 61.2 - breaking the old record of 59.4 set in 2019. Today will be the warmest day of the week as temps could approach near record levels this PM. A little cooler but still over 80 degrees tomorrow before we start a cool down over the weekend along with the chance of some much needed showers. Records for today: High 86 (1977) / Low 21 (1975) / Rain 2.40"

Maybe some below normal spring days in our future if GFS is to be believed -
Well it is likely we are finished with any snow this season here in Chester County PA. This season ended up being our 3rd least snowy winter since records began back in 1888. Below are the top 20 least and most snowy winters. Note that 6 of our snowiest seasons have occurred since 2000 - while only 4 of our least snowy seasons have taken place since 2000.

We had a record high minimum temperature this AM of just 58.8 degrees breaking the old record of 58.7 set back in 2017. We should approach 80 degrees especially in the lower spots of Chester County today. This will still be well below the record for today but almost 20 degrees above normal for the date. Dry and warm weather through Friday with showers this weekend followed by a return to near normal April temperatures next week and for an extended stretch of days. Records for today: High 87 (1990) / Low 20 (1975) / Rain 1.95" (1933) / Snow 1" (1894)

Today begins a stretch of well above normal temps that will last into the start of the weekend. Looks like we cool down to normal to a little below again by the middle of next week. We should see 80's by Thursday and Friday...but we should stay well below the record highs for those dates. We could use some rain as we are now at only 71% of normal through today. Records for today: High 84 (2017) / Low 23 (1909) / Precipitation 1.85" (1894) / Snow - today in 1894 marks the end of the greatest 2 day late season April snowstorms in the counties history. With today's 18.5" of snow along with the previous day's 9.7" we recorded a wet snow total of 28.2" in Western Chester County.

We have picked up 0.19" of rain so far this morning. Sun should return for a while this afternoon and temps will soar well into the 60's to near 70 degrees. This has a good chance to be our warmest day so far this year (so far 66.3 on Feb 23rd). A strong cold front crosses the county toward evening with a sharp drop in temps. There cold be a strong thunderstorm and there is a high wind advisory in effect till 2am Sunday. We should see temps fall back into the 40's by late evening. Much colder tomorrow with temps running almost 10 degrees below normal. Highs should be in the mid to upper 40's. Much milder to start the new work week. Records: High 84 degrees (1917) / Low 7 degrees (1923) / Rain 1.26" (1977) / Snow 15.0" (1924) -

Plenty of valley locations across Chester County saw sub freezing temps this morning with some upper 20's in spots. Along the higher ridge locations we temps remained in the mid-30's. Today will be just about normal regarding high temps with readings in the mid-50's. Tomorrow we slip to well below normal with highs in the mid-40's. We warm up to start the weekend but with showers likely on Friday night into Saturday. Records for today: High 87 (1945) / Low 9 (1923) / Rain 1.23" (1984) / Snow 3.0" (1942) -
