The northern lights were visible at least as far south as the Catskills and Poconos last night. I slept through it, naturally. https://www.instagram.com/p/CpK8gUfMmt3/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

I'll take it *and* complain. I can walk and chew gum.

It would be hard to blame them for grading on a curve. This is, after all, the first widespread significant event of the season, with all the heightened impacts that come with that.

Downslope purgatory incoming

This is one of the greatest things I've ever read. Just an all-time great. Monuments will be erected in its honor.

That's a solid map I think. The initial overrunning stage looks juicy enough, but assume climo ratios or slightly worse, given mediocre snow growth soundings throughout. Nothing wrong at all with a 4-6" deal.

Getting brighter here after 1.3"
-
Approaching an inch here too. It's like a clipper from yesteryear.

Positive or negative strike?

GFS now flips us all to sleet for a short time on Tuesday. Quickly running out of wiggle room.
-
It's a shame we couldn't get some of that warm front action today. At least a few runs earlier in the week had highs near 60. Instead, crap.
-
0.6" this morning. First measurable snow of February on the 21st.
-
18z GFS would get us close to normal snowfall, amusingly. It's coming in some form imo.

I'm old enough to remember when this weekend was supposed to be cold.

New England Met Winter 2022-2023 Banter
Juliancolton replied to HoarfrostHubb's topic in New England
We sure the chlorine smell isn't just the petrichor that always happens when rain falls on warm/dry ground? -
I think warm season drought is just gonna be an annual thing during years without big tropical intrusions. You either get a stalled subtrop in June and then a hurricane PRE late summer, or you have water restrictions.
-
The rain falling on warm ground smells just like a summer thunderstorm
-
9.2" here against 18.5" in 15-16. I would think I'm climatologically favored to stay ahead (behind?) at this point. The warmth today is a little meh locally. 58 so far.

#drought2k23 is off to a cracking start

It feels so weird out tonight. It's one thing to have a February evening in the upper 50s with low ceilings and a roaring SE wind, but tonight is perfectly clear and calm. Just madness.
-
Second of (likely) five days in a row with highs >= 55. That's 21 days at or above 50 since the start of met. winter. Pretty wild.
-
There's 50 for today (51, actually). Beautiful weather for lunch on the patio. That 1.5-day cold blast notwithstanding, this February has been nicer than a lot of Aprils we've had.
-
Yeah, I get that it's good for heating bills and the well-being of life and property, but as a wx fan, real slog of a year. I guess it makes you appreciate the fun stuff more. Topping out at 49 so far today. Just a few minutes of thinner cirrus needed to clock another 50 day.

Yeah, I love big diurnal swings. If there are no storm systems around, give me a lunar airmass that falls off a cliff at sunset.

...down to 32, less than two hours after the high. Impressive drop.
