Obs and nowcast Friday morning 3A-Noon Feb 5, 2021
gravitylover replied to wdrag's topic in New York City Metro
32/30/SSE1/SN It was legitimately heavy for a little while there but it's down to moderate now, flake size went from huge to small/med and the wind is gone. There's a fresh, clean .5" covering (so far) on everything, we'll see if the lighter rates don't allow for some melting on the paved surfaces. edit: 5 minutes later and it's back to heavy snow with large flakes. Expectations exceeded- 21 replies

Nothing in the first round so I pretty much expected 7 flakes and then rain. That's not what happened. It's snowing hard and sticking to everything including the street. It looks to be moving pretty fast though...- 21 replies

Temps are poppin', it's 34-36 around the area now. Still under a complete overcast with flurries, roads are wet.
-
It's still flurrying but it's really drying up now and the cloud deck has thinned significantly. Final additional tally from 3pm>now is a hair over 3" not the 5 I thought early this morning.

Still light snow/flurries, but it's really drying out now, with what looks to be a pretty thin cloud deck. The light is good and there are occasional flashes of brightness the temp had stayed down until now so this mornings 3" of fluff was easy to move out of the way. 31/25/NNW5/FL

It's still snowing. The snow started around 3 in the afternoon, stopped for a few hours then picked up again early this morning. I've gotten 3" additional since the main show ended yesterday morning.

It started snowing again around 3:30, got serious at 5 and now there's just under 2" new. The town plow even came and made another pass.

Light snow picking up again, wind still out of the north and the temp is down 2 or 3° from the peak about 2 hours ago and things are freezing up again.
-
I don't know what to do with the measurement for this one. If I had a decent place to measure every 6 hours, the wind was insane, I probably would have had near 30" total. As it is my property goes from 2" > 40" with the median at 23" (at 7am). Since about 7pm it has been a mix of heavy wet snow, crystals, grains, freezing mist and nearly sunny so the compaction is impressive and its down to about 15" now. Total shoveling time (so far) is just under 10 hours, driveway banks are well over my head which is always cool, just waiting for the town plow to fill in the end of the driveway again when they come to move the banks back

The wind was howling here for 8 hours straight. It's really light now so what's falling is just accumulating gently.
-
I don't know what to do with this. I've got from 2" to 40" on the ground. The median is 23 so I guess 23 is what it is. It's been misting for the last 90 minutes or so and was a mix of crystals, frozen grains and big flakes for 2 hours before that. It's only 30* but everything is compacting in a hurry. The compaction started around 7 last night when a round of heavy pellets and sleet fell for a few minutes and then the temp went up over night and everything settled at least a few inches and then the RN. My estimate based on what I'm seeing in the wind and temp sheltered bushes is it was probably right about 30" but I could never count it that way. The driveway banks are well over my head. Waiting for the plow to come again and fill the end of the driveway for me. I always enjoy throwing that wet, heavy, salty, slushy mess up 6 or 7 feet onto the banks

^^Well, it started snowing again a few hours ago. Sometimes it's at the heavy end of moderate but mostly the lighter end of moderate. It probably put down another inch and it's still accumulating now. Edit: 6:55 back to legitimately heavy snow. Yay...

After 3 rounds of shoveling I was wiped out. Ate some brownies, sat down and fell asleep so I didn't get to measure. Looks like it's pretty much done now, at least until the backside comes through, and the (trained) eyeball measurement is saying 2' easily. I'll get a better look in the morning after it settles

It ramped up around 11 and by 1 it was pounding. It slowed down to ~1"/hr for maybe 30 minutes then wound up again. The plow finally came down the street and the bank on the uphill side, my side, was chest high and settled to about 3'. My patio is 3' of dense windpack with 1 drift almost 4' high. The dog decided the (waterproof) entry mat is preferable to trying to get through that. Oh well...

I'm the next town north and yeah, we got pounded. 20+ so far.

First lull I've had since 11am, it's still snowing but nothing like the last 8 hours. That was intense and if the radar is right it's just a few minutes before I'm back in the soup.

Time sensitive but wow, what a cool effect over the ocean and coming onshore and into southern Westchester and Fairfield https://weather.cod.edu/satrad/nexrad/index.php?type=OKX-N0Q-1-24#

Man oh man... What's out there now is nowhere near as light as it was this morning and early afternoon. There has to be at least 20" so far. Huge drifts and bare ground, gotta love it. I can see some lights through the snow at around 600 feet away but that's it. The street still hasn't been plowed and nobody has been down it now since about 2pm. The people that have shoveled/snowblowed (?) have moved a fair bit of snow to the street downstream of their driveways so there are piles 3 feet deep in the middle of the street. If anything other than a big town plow tries to get through theyre' fkd.

I didn't know it could snow this hard for this long here. I'm in awe. Gonna go do the third round of snow removal in a few minutes when I finish this beer and smoke another one

My goodness it's coming down and the wind is howling. I've been under 1k foot visibility since about 11 and under 800 a good bit of that time. There's well over a foot out there but it's really hard to measure. I had a few spots at 12" in wind sheltered areas at about 2 so they are probably near 15 now.

It's pretty wonderful, dark and gloomy with absolutely dumping huge flakes and large aggregated pellets. I've been under an insane rip since about 1, went out and spent 90 minutes moving snow and put down nearly 5" while I was out there. The trick is to build a snow wall on the north side of the driveway so the snow off the front yards piles up against it rather than dumping into the driveway. I have some nice drifts around the berm and an almost bare spot in the center of the driveway. Perfect wind direction to keep the truck blown clean too
-
It is still puking out there. I'm easily at a foot now. The wind moved from N to NE and now it's mostly N again. I'm watching for the move to the NW, that should signal the pivot is done.
-
Man its dumpin' out there. Its been like this since about 11:30. Just coming down!

^^ Yup, similar. I'm just over the east side of a good sized hill and the wind makes it hard. I'm also approaching a foot now, close but not quite. There has only been 1 vehicle down the street all day, someones plow guy from down the street so the street is nearly pristine which is pretty cool. I'm going for another walk soon. It's officially dumping out there kidz. Visibility is down under 1,000 feet now, I can't see the next street down the hill and the wind is hammering from the north. This is easily 2"/hr and probably more like 3+ but the wind... 26/26/NNE16-21/SN++
