I agree. Curveball warmup (blunted by backdoor trash) before we squeeze out at least one more winter storm that gets pasty snow down to the coast.
-
Moderate snow on Roosevelt Island. Roads covered (again).
-
I can honestly see a curveball warmup next weekend before the hammer comes back down before a late-season winter storm and painful crawl toward sustained spring wx.
-
Has barely let up on Roosevelt Island all morning. The City Band just refuses to move! Wife asked me when we are “taking a Jebwalk.” She’s officially one of us!
-
I can verify. I live on Roosevelt Island and can barely see the Manhattan skyline right now!
-
This has actually become the ultimate signal for me over the past decade and a half lol.

You’re a tough grader! I’d give it a solid B+ if Spring were to march in and stick around. The immense cold that kept our snowpack locked in for weeks on end is why most people are going to remember this winter for awhile. I’m also an out-front retention snob. I do think this winter has a little bit of gas left in the tank. Maybe one more shot at something toward the end of Feb before we get a classic mild, Niña March. Zooming way out, I am encouraged that we had favorable breaks from the cutter-cold-suppression-cutter nonsense in December and January that allowed us to build up a snowpack. Even if we revert to it for a time, I think we are cycling away from it as a dominant pattern. I’m actually really curious what next winter might feature if we see a bona fide Niño—something we haven’t seen in quite awhile.

Unpopular opinion here, but I wish the deep cold would stick around through the month—even if it’s not accompanied by more snow. I absolutely live for snowpack retention and the tundra-like feel it gives us. It’s what winter should be and I’m loving every second of it!

Wife and I went for a Jebwalk on Roosevelt Island. After I explained the concept of a Jebwalk to her (which she found super-endearing), we measured a 11.8” here. Solid storm in what’s turning out to be a solid winter. I continue to believe we’ve passed the nadir of craptastic winters.

I would say we are back to more than 50% snow on Roosevelt Island.
-
Seeing some flakes mixing back in on Roosevelt Island, but still mainly mod/heavy sleet. Eyeballing about 10 inches here.
-
Lol sorry I meant the Hudson. And I know it won’t freeze all the way across, but I do remember seeing some decent icebergs on it during the second halves of the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 winters.

What are the chances the East River freezes?

Valid to a point. There’s also no Atlantic Ocean bordering Arkansas…. -

Shave two inches from the snow component of this and I think it’s a solid forecast. -

I think this is a good comparison too. Anyone know offhand what phase the MJO was in during it? I think our being in 6 right now is partly responsible for the upcoming slop storm on the coast. Hopefully we cash in as we move through 8-1-2 during the next few weeks when the cold is around. -
Love the nostalgic turn this thread has taken. My journey was AccuWx —> Bill Evans board —> Tristateweather —> Eastern —> Here. Anyone remember a poster on the Bill Evans board named “hani345.” They lived in Newburgh and would always post punctuation-free sentences like: “Bill how windy is it gonna be please Bill I’m scared….”

I read through the last two pages and your post reassured me that I’m not alone. Also, why does the thread title keep changing?

That’s a top-notch list to make if you are hoping for a snowy rest of the winter as well. I genuinely do not understand how any winter wx lovers in the Tri-State found December disappointing. Plenty of reasons for optimism this year after a string of true ratters.

Can confirm about an even 6 inches in Lindy.
-
Still snowing steadily at my parents’ house in Lindenhurst (SW Suffolk). This latest band has delivered nicely. About 5.5 inches on the ground now.
-
Ok.
-
That deep-winter, tundra feel to it. Perfection!

Just left my parents’ in Lindenhurst (SW Suffolk) to head back to the city. Can confirm that light snow was falling while I was waiting on the platform.
