  1. Someone clue me in, please. I've seen this before. There's a disconnect from what I see as the so-called "strength" of the hurricane as reported in it's windspeed, i.e., "Category 4 storm with winds of 155mph" doesn't match what my layman's eyes see reported on the various weather sites. The eyewall looks to be at this moment(12:29pm) coming ashore at Captiva/Sanibel Island. The stations that I see reporting (at the eyewall) the highest sustained wind is St. Stephens at 71mph with a gust to 86mph. So, my question is, is the number that is given to us by the hurricane folks supposed to match actual ground windspeeds?
  2. Unqualified HOT in Macon today. 106deg at MCN. That follows a low this morning of 64deg. Very unusual spread of 41 degrees. For June, got to be almost unheard of.
  3. Wow. Just a great spring day here in Macon. At MCN they reported a Low of 34(yep) and High of 75. That's a nice spread.
  4. Well, It was great ! I was a little disappointed as we didn't get the sleet, though. We started around 3:00am with a little freezing rain but it changed over to almost all snow within an hour or two. Only had a light glaze, less than 1/10th inch before the snow started. But the snow was great. Almost 4" fell on Wednesday and another 7" on Thursday with the second system. We were on the west side so we had a little more than reported at STL. And it was low density snow, and so nice. But it was such a low density that it was mostly impossible to make a snowman.
  5. For days I've been watching the Mid-America storm that is brewing. Decided late last night head up to see my daughter in St. Louis today so I'll be trying to experience one of those late 70's-early 80's sleet fests that I remember from my childhood. We never hear from "Tony" in Griffin, GA anymore on the board. Not sure where he's been these last few years but I know he would share my enthusiasm for such an event. NAM advertising a light glaze before dawn tomorrow, then an all day sleet storm of 1-2" until about midnight, then 10-12" on snow on top from midnight until early afternoon on Thursday. A perfect winter birthday cake!
  6. A nice surprise(if you like a super-slick porch) as our deck is now completely covered with sleet here on the west side of Macon. 34deg and 90% sleet/10%rain now..
  7. Here in Macon, that heavy band training overhead has rain with moderate sleet mixed in at 34deg. Back porch is slippery. Kinda figured we might see a little.
  8. A couple of flickers of the power but we're still hanging on here on Little Bear Pen mountain in Highlands. Had a roaring fire last night and all morning so life is good. Snow slacking up now. Up to about 14" but I think a half-inch-3/4 inch is the late morning sleet.
  9. Snowing to beat the band here in Highlands at 3,900ft. Don't know how long this keeps up but this is some in/hr stuff I"m sure.
  10. Measured 10" on the table on the deck here in Highlands about an hour ago. Will try to post pics. Just gorgeous !
  11. No obs page yet, I think, but as my niece just announced, "It's snowing !" here in Highlands. And 31deg.
  12. Both 12zEuro ENS and 12zGFS ENS suggesting possibilities for cad-ish areas on Sunday/Monday the 19th and 20th. Standard caveats: 7-8 days out, timing of the high moving out of position, dependable moisture feed, etc.
  13. About 20 years ago I read in SKI magazine about day trips to the top of Mauna Kea for the seemingly incongruous activity of skiing in Hawaii. Always been on my list ever since. I guess days like this are helpful to those who are so lucky.(well, maybe you wouldn't want to go today or tomorrow, but at least it lays down the goods) National Weather Service 2 products issued by NWS for: 13 Miles E Kealakekua HI Share | Blizzard Warning URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE National Weather Service Honolulu HI 343 AM HST Sat Dec 4 2021 ...BLIZZARD WARNING FOR THE BIG ISLAND SUMMITS... 14. Here in Macon, a Low of 41 and High of 80 for a 39deg spread. I'm lovin' it. Precipitation is overrated. (unless it's snow)
  15. Macon had a low of 36 and a high of 76 for a 40 degree spread. That's twice in the last couple of weeks.
  16. Tornado Warning just came over my weather radio. Welcome to 2021 !!!
  17. They got snow on Halloween. They used up all their good, snow Ju-Ju for possibly decades !
  18. Merry Christmas, Southeast Crew !!! Yes, it snowed in Lizella, GA on Christmas. I didn't see it fall, but some of my neighbors have the video proof. I was up about 1:00 am and saw the little band incoming but it set up just south of me. A smattering of flakes, Is all it takes, For Southerners like us, Such happiness makes, It falls for a moment, And sticks for a few, It alters our feelings, Enhances the view, We track it's incoming, With models and prose, Rejoice! "negative tilt", We mourn the, "warm nose," But a Maconites dream, Primed with each flake that I see, Is the promise again, Of February, '73.
  19. It's also possible that the "South of 85" curse is specifically because of Mack and the country may now be faced with a new curse of "South of Hwy 20"(hwy that bisects Dubuque). We should all monitor 20-21 snowfall in Iowa and the midwest and if this hypothesis proves correct we will all chip in and buy Mack a house on the beach in Fort Lauderdale !!! And, anticipation will bring you back to post in the SE Forum, for sure, as we all love to watch a good tragedy, i.e, our GFS-inspired winters. Enjoy the new environs, Sir ! New adventures are always great for the soul.
  20. Watching this line from here in Macon with ya, rips. Yeah, not good.
  21. 06z GFS closes off a low(weak) over southern Mississippi on Saturday morning which gives a little blue-radar stuff to northern parts of Alabama. Fizzles as it reaches Georgia as the low is squashed. 00z did as well, but just a little further north before squashing as well. Neither Euro or CMC have shown this feature. Curious to see if 12z has it today.
  22. "And this mornings's weather report, Bob, has us with sunny skies, 38 degrees, with a slight chance of iguanas........."
  23. Sleet sounds good and yeah, he would love it. And, it has been a while, and I think I posted iI in the banter thread a year or so ago, and I might have missed some update, but what's the story with Tony? No word from him in years.
