  2. Fertilizer can definitely increase the growth of algae, which some bloom has already shut down Spruce Run in western Jersey from swimming for the year. Happens to that lake more so than others?
  3. What does hazardous chemicals have to do with elevated bacteria levels, unless the "hazardous" chemicals are a food source for the bacteria, but I would be surprised if that growth would happen naturally. More likely a washout from a wastewater treatment plant from a sudden storm or just from leaching out of local septic tanks and leach fields.

  6. Weather models are just not as sexy as space exploration. Plus, if you achieve your goals in space, or landing on Mars, you can see your achievements. Even if you improve the GFS, there are still other reliable models, so the increase in forecasting accuracy overall probably wouldn't be noticeable. In the end, no real significant reward for the investment.

  12. Summer Solstice. My summer starts June first.
  13. Back around 1980, I won the department's contest for first 1.0 " of snowfall, well, almost. I used historical data, finding a pattern like that December, and sure I enough, I hit the date. Everyone thought I had won, but the Professor measured it a few hours after the snow ended, so it had time to compact and melt, yielding just under an inch. So yeah, discrepancies galore...

  16. Sitting around outside with a fire is pretty nice, but in suburbia, its an annoyance to your neighbors...
  17. I had assumed that the Canadian Smoke was a major contributor to the Air Quality index.
  18. That's why I say to use the total historical data, not the previous 30 year average from 10 years ago?
  19. Supposedly they are more energy efficient that AC, though is mainly only good at night, and if it is a "normal" summer's eve where the temperature actually drops below 80 degrees.
  20. Probably was the "modern convenience" in late 1950s-60s before ACs took over?
