Yes but you didn’t have to go far north to see a significantly snowier winter. The Mason Dixon line got about 40-50”. Ya there was a lot of ice mix up here too but each storm dropped like 4-8” of snow before the ice up here and with the temps there was a deep snowcover all winter almost to April!  The ice/snow line kept setting up almost the exact same place all winter just NW of the metro areas.

I think I remember seeing -12 that Jan as I was under my parent's porch trying to thaw frozen pikes.

Saw the Van Gogh immersive experience in DC last week.  It was a really good exhibit. To only know what was going on inside his head......

Lightning , thunder and hail in Westminster. Happy January.

I saw the lightning up your way from down here.  It lit up the whole sky for a sec.    Having a few pingers here now.

    Yes. It isn't that important.

And the Ravens aren't likely going to win a playoff game regardless of what their seeding is with a HS level passing game.

I agree.   I know that Home Field advantage means something, but in the big picture, it really doesn't matter that much.  If you want to get to the Super Bowl, you still need to beat everyone, regardless of seeding.

I'm not much of a beer drinker, but so far I approve of Breckenridge Brewery Avalanche.  I'd approve of it even more if it was snowing outside.  One of the reasons I like winter is that it gives me a break from the biking/hoops.  Not sure I want or need 3-4 months (if I wanted that I'd move to Burlington while I'm still single), but if we don't end up with a Jan/Feb winter, then I might need to create my own temporary retirement for the sake of my feet/knees/back.  However, the fact that we were able to get into the single digits in December makes me think winter is still attainable.  That, and the fact that it's not even January yet.

You don't play Hoops inside during winter?

How does this pass code?  That's like a chimney, does not appear to have any structural support at all.  It's all for looks but that surface area is like a sail.  A 70mph gust is 20psf, for example.

That strip mall has been there as long as I can remember.  Looks to have metal studs and probably had an updated facade at some point, but It was standing at least in the late 80s.

In other news. Lamar will not paly Saturday. Not surprising. Not sure he plays again this season. Why would he?

When they end up 9-8 and  and crash out of the playoffs I won't be surprised.

LOL. Checked in this morning for the first time in months to get the skinny on the impending frozen precip event tonight/tomorrow A.M. and saw this notification. Appreciate you asking.  :)

My day job and teaching as a side hustle, has been crazy busy since late spring and I've been scarce online in general. Have missed your Caps banter and trash talk, as well as hearing about the further adventures of @H2O's retirement, the end of @mattie g's and @Kay's growing seasons, and of course, all of the awesome IPA recommendations from @CAPE, @Scraff and other brew appreciators.

I'll probably lurk more again over the holidays, especially since it looks like a colder period coming up...and to drop the occasional photo, like this one captured on Fort Belvoir's parade field just before this morning's sunrise.

100% with you on that. We definitely have it in us to do it, but it's always hard to break down teams who are looking to nullify any sort of attack and who aren't looking to attack in their own right.

If Iran gets a first goal of the match, then it's going to be grim viewing, but if we can somehow pick one up first then we may be able to slice them up as they come out of their shell.

How good is Iran's player with the two yellow cards?  Will his one game suspension matter much?

They're not just accommodating the US audience though. There are nine Western Hemisphere teams in this tournament; most of their games are the later ones. Also, they have to play four games per day because this World Cup is condensed this year (because it's stupidly in Qatar in the middle of most club seasons around the world), so they have to spread them out throughout the day. Finally, the TV times are much better in Europe than they are here.

If you're saying that we shouldn't play at 2:00pm in the group stage, then I have to disagree. There's no harm in having US games at that time as it doesn't affect TV times for any of our opponents except Iran. Those 5:00am EST games are being played at 2:00pm Qatar time. They could have started earlier, but that's not good for TV in Europe, and definitely not for viewership in the Western Hemisphere. East Asia is screwed for TV times, which isn't unusual at all for World Cups.

I stayed up at night and watched many of the 2002 games (didn't hurt that I was in grad school and slinging beers at a pub at that time). Definitely good times, especially because we made a great run in that tournament!

Thanks for the insight.  I wasn't saying that they shouldn't play at 2:00 pm, just was "new" to see them playing so late in the local time.

I am totally looking forward to watching as many games as possible.  I'm  up at 5:00 a.m. and am definitely looking forward to watching all morning through the group stage.

You have any dark horse teams who might over perform?   Should be a great month!

You may have read that wrong. The game is live at 2:00pm EST (10:00 pm in Qatar).

During the peak of the tournament during the group stage, the games start at 5:00am EST - 8:00am EST - 11:00am EST - 2:00am EST.

All of our group games start at 2:00 pm EST. If we make it through the group (top two advance), our first knockout game would be at 10:00am EST on Saturday 12/4 or 2:00pm EST on Sunday 12/5, depending on where we finish in the group.

thanks.  Just seems odd that they are trying to accommodate the US viewing audience by playing such a late game.   I guess that it is not as bad as it seems.  I just remember recording all of the games years ago when it was in Japan/Korea on the VCR and watching them that morning.

Thanks man! This was abrupt. Plan was in place for years but 2022? Didn't see that coming. Because we're doing it so early, the math is different. This is no early retirement. Kinda the opposite lol.

Appreciate it. We're taking the road less traveled.  Blood, sweat, and tears instead of chasing money and big houses. Off grid as well. Not hooking up to any utilities. Prop taxes are $300/yr as is and maybe 700 tops when we build. I'm 100% done chasing stuff and money. All it ever did was stress me out and make me anxious. I'm busting my ass 15 days a month running heavy equipment and developing the land. Never felt better in my life. Especially in my head. This is what I'm supposed to do. No idea how I know. I just know. Same with the wife. Feels bizarre at times but we're really happy.

You should seriously document your work and Vlog it on Youtube.  I see folks doing exactly what you are doing and it could be a way to give some of your knowledge back.

    By the way, everyone...

US-Wales in our World Cup opener next Monday at 2:00 pm on Fox and FS1 (and Peacock and other streaming services)!

Is that taped?  Seems awfully late for a game to be played live.

Pretty clear trend in the guidance for a further west track which will knock down rain totals for those of us along the I-95 corridor.    It does, however, open the door for a TOR threat, although instability may be too meager to take advantage of the very strong low-level shear.

Question about how Nicole formed.  If it started as a subtropical storm, doesn't that change where the wind field is located within the storm?  If it does, could that wind field shift as it strengthens and becomes a hurricane?
