As far as compaction in April goes, I remember vividly the 2nd storm of back to back in April 1996 in ORH...we got clobbered with about 16”. I remember the snow was heavy until mid to late morning. I measured a depth of around 14-15” at 1030am...not even 4 hours later it was about 37-38F and overcast after the snow had fully stopped for a couple hours. I measured about 7” of compact cement. I couldn’t believe how quick it had settled.

Yeah it’s about 250-275 higher than his place. The house is around 1500. Not a huge elevation difference but in a marginal setup it can matter. Also, it’s April and compaction is going to be big once the sun comes out. Looked sunny in that pic.

This still mostly sucks. 48F with full sun on 4/11 is kind of pathetic. It beats 40F and misery mist but I want 60+ if it’s going to be sunny. At least we can get outside for a little bit this afternoon so it could be worse.

Yeah I was saying upthread how affordable a lot of S VT is until you are almost right on top of the resorts like Stratton or Mt. Snow. Even a couple miles away is surprisingly cheap. Love how you threw a fall pic in there of your place...we talk so much winter in here but foliage season can be breathtaking in the mountains.

Yeah, you’ll be laughing at ORH now when we think 80-90” is a good winter. How quickly the tables can turn.

Yeah nothing wrong with small and quaint either. Don’t get me wrong, Phin probably has one of the best views I’ve ever seen...I’m jelly....but I sometimes like small and tucked away too. Theres many ways to attain perfection. I think just about all of us posting about these various places all share a similar passion for mountains/woods/snow/etc.

Yeah if there’s any type of inclement weather in the winter, there’s no chance to drive from VT to Rangeley. That would be beyond hideous. All those windy back roads that go over some big elevations.

We blamed Fozz for the shit SNE winter this year. Phineas is from the same part of MD, so hopefully different result next winter.

Rangeley is really far. No doubt. It’s like 4-4.5 hours from here. I can do Sunday River in 3 and the Raymond/Denmark area in 2 and change. Rangeley is worth the drive though IMHO. It’s pretty amazing.

Great post greenmtwx. Very helpful on the real estate front for a vacation home. I love the extra info on VT since I’m less familiar there than with Maine or NH. I fell in love with western Maine due to the dual summer/winter potential with a ton of lakes around there and reasonable prices. We go up there every summer....and used to go every winter before we had kids. But I’ve been open to looking in other areas and the extra insight is always helpful...I wouldn’t be ready to buy until my 4 year old and 8 month old are a little older...but time moves faster than we think, lol. I still browse quite a bit. Helping Phineas with the weather aspect of each location reintroduced by enthusiasm a bit for the hunt of a great place.

Was mostly graupel and rain mixed when it came through here with some mangled flakes mixed in. Though the real meat just missed to my east.

Yeah...I’m sure his wife and kids would love a bunch of drunk snow weenies taking over the back porch. LOL In all honesty...that’s seriously an incredible view of the Presidentials there and without the negative strings attached like when you’re in Conway or Littleton or Berlin and dealing with downsloping. Getting the goods on both NE flow and NW flow is how to do it.

Yeah that’s a snowy look at 132 on EPS. We’ll see. We know the caveats of day 5-6...Nevermind mid April. But that is an obscene airmass for this time of the year. Lot of records would probably fall out in the Midwest if that verified...and maybe some here too afterward even though it modifies some.

Yeah they basically don’t have a downsloping direction there. I guess theoretically due South or southeast but they are so close to Mt Adams/MWN that the downslope probably doesn’t really hit until up in Berlin. And of course, total CAD heaven there...about as good as it gets for retention. Total weenie spot.

I feel like Alex would be pretty close in snow but maybe a little less? He’s far enough west that he could get some shadow there. I forget what elevation Alex is at.

Hell even now there’s almost 2 feet on the ground there after yesterday’s 11”...in a crap winter.

Yeah the cocorahs station just up the road from him had its worst winter in 2015-2016 at 92 inches. And we know horrific that year was in NNE. Beyond awful. Prob like a once in 30-50 year winter Even 2011-2012 had almost 120” there. Plenty of winters near and easily exceeding 200” in only an 11 year record. Not very easy to find that at liveable elevations in New England.

Yeah it looks like the house is around 1500 feet if I’m looking correctly. The top of the property prob closer to like 1580 and the bottom closer to 1400. Really sweet location. You aren’t going to be worrying about many snow hole issues there. You’ll prob be amazed at the differences just driving west into Jefferson and north into Berlin.

Biggest danger might be to early blooming fruit trees...esp in SNE though parts of CNE may have had some early action on those trees. There are going to be some really hard freezes if that airmass is anything close to progged.

Nah the cutter precedes the trough...we prob have a couple shots in the d6-10 range though. Extremely anomalous. We’ll see if the look moderates or not.

Might have multiple shots at something. That trough is ridiculous. EPS is 3 sigma trough over the lakes at 144 hours...that’s hard to get on an ensemble mean at day 6.

Yeah they are nice. They don’t look quite as “big” as the Presidentials but they are pretty jagged. Some of those views of Avery peak and little bigalow have that western flavor. Others are correct about Katahdin though its s little different from my description since it’s a single mountain...but still a western feel. Katahdin reminds me a little of Humphries Peak in Arizona. Kind of just sticking out on its own compared to the smaller hills surrounding it. Both are near 4K elevation gains.
