    There’s now 16.5” of ice on Lake Nokomis. The U.S. Pond Hockey Championships were supposed to kick off today but are postponed due to the cold. Not my photo but here is a Zamboni getting the numerous rinks ready in the snow yesterday.

    The further north track of this winter storm will allow a thick layer of cloud cover to build in throughout the night that will keep us much warmer than we thought 2 or 3 days ago. Lows will be in the -10Fs but with no wind we`ll just be uncomfortably cold versus dangerously cold

    MSP fell below zero at 3:45pm dropping to -2 with WNW winds at 25 gusting to 37. Significant drifting over the road on the east side of the lake in my neighborhood.

    Was out in Colorado 1/8-1/15, got blessed with 10” of powder on day 1, but it’s historically bad out there. Definitely the worst season on record. People throw out 76/77 but they didn’t have snowmaking to supplement things back then. Fire season will be lit. (Pun intended)

    Just under an inch of fresh snow today should help, although it’s blowing all around. Definitely expecting the coldest temps here since January 2019 when MSP had a daily hi/lo of -13/-28. I’ll be satisfied if we can get to -20 this go around. Outlying areas should have little trouble achieving that.

    Looks like the CME has arrived at G4 levels. I’ll step outside once it gets dark. Feeling pretty blessed to have caught vivid light shows in my backyard multiple times this solar cycle.

    Sad the Bears season came to an end but if you’d have told me in early September they’d win the division, beat the Packers in the playoffs and take the Rams to overtime I’d have laughed at you. Successful season, now we are doomed with a first place schedule next year. All likable teams left in the playoffs
