  1. 1.60” storm total here. Might add a few hundredths more.
  2. Minneapolis set a record high again today reaching 54, breaking the old record of 52. I actually did some yard work in a t-shirt today. Steady light rain will be ongoing all night. This was a fun one to track even though it was wet instead of white.
  3. Our ~32 hour rain event is underway. Temps maxed out at 54 degrees. Minneapolis seems to be in the sweet spot to end up in the warm sector longer then almost every other area in the Midwest. The cold tongue punches quite a bit southeast of us.
  4. As expected the record high for today was broken at 3am. Currently we’ve surged up to 50, models are trending the heaviest rain totals to my west now.
  5. 12/24 is low hanging fruit for high temperature records in Minneapolis. Current record is 46, the forecast high tomorrow is 55. The low tomorrow might be warmer then the previous record high. Last year Minneapolis stayed below zero on 12/22-23 and only rose to 7 on 12/24.
  6. Be careful. Someone drowned in Northwest Minnesota overnight after their ATV fell through the ice.
  7. The upside to the 2”+ of rainfall we are going to see tomorrow is deep soil moisture will get replenished. 2 summers of flash drought have really sapped soil moisture. The downside is what it will do to my ski hill.
  8. And now with the 12z run the GFS keeps us all rain with nearly 2” falling.
  9. GFS has latched onto the idea of backside accumulating snow on Tuesday, while the low spins in place. Something to track and be disappointed by while everything is closed for the holidays.
  10. The past 6 years of seasonal snowfall in Minneapolis. Average is 54” 22/23 - 90.7” 21/22 - 50.2” 20/21 - 48.7” 19/20 - 51.5” 18/19 - 77.1” 17/18 - 78.3” We are due for a clunker.
  11. There are 6 ski hills open daily within a 75 minute drive from my house. Not every winter is going to be frigid and snowy but I still get to enjoy my winter hobbies. Throwing my gear in the car for a hump day shred sesh right now. Long term post Xmas rains look better here. Still a long way to go this winter.
  12. Both the GFS and Euro are showing backside accumulating snow occulating into my area behind the Christmas rains. Long way off but interesting to see both models showing that feature.
  13. Selective breeding? Send me one, I’ll plant it in my in-laws backyard, they are about a mile north of the 45th parallel.
  14. 12/24 record high in Minneapolis is 46, current forecast is 49 and lots of rain.
  15. Low of 17. Had a dusting of snow at work, nothing at home.
  16. Pretty hefty snow squalls in Duluth this evening. Canal Cam shows the wind really whipping.
  17. Crazy, how often are soils frost free in mid-December up that way? Models are trending drier here now, putting the heaviest axis of precip to my NW
  18. It is looking like 0.50-0.75” of very cold rain Friday night/Saturday. Might cause minor flooding with the ground being frozen. The Euro and Canadian models are trying to switch things over to snow here and potentially get interesting with accumulations, but my gut says it’ll be white rain at best. Duluth and areas just south will get snow and maybe salvage a white Christmas?
  19. Should push 50 in Minneapolis today. Record high for the date is 55 from 1998, we have an outside chance of hitting it. I was just a kid in Chicagoland on 12/14/1998 with no idea what I was in store for a little over two weeks later.
  20. Overachiever day up to 43 on the official thermometer. Still lots of patches of snow hanging around, they should be gone by Friday.
  21. I was wondering if there is even enough ice to safety set up an ice-house yet? I saw a few people out on the lake near my house last evening. I wouldn’t trust the ice in the metro anytime soon.
  22. Nothing unprecedented about this upcoming warm stretch, just unusual. What a change year to year though
  23. 0.4” of snowfall yesterday. Season total at 4.5”
  24. Glad they aren’t succumbing to the cold. Did you have anything outside during the January 2019 cold snap? Wasn’t that the last deep cold in Milwaukee? For me this time of year I’d define “palm tree weather” as days within 3 degrees of a record high.
