  1. we have to get rid of that annoying ocean....we didn't even hit 90 here today.
  2. But those water temps are only near the surface, I think some are under the mistaken impression that we can get Cat 4/5 hurricanes like areas further south can. The warm water extends to much deeper depths down there and upwelling here means those warm ocean temps dont last very long. As a matter of fact, a nice hot land breeze actually means more upwelling and cooler sea surface temps and a yucky humid breeze from the SE is what makes the sst warmer and yet the coast cooler. The strength of oncoming tropical cyclones around here has much more to do with the overall pattern and the speed of the oncoming storm rather than how warm or cool the sst are.
  3. thats exactly what I'm saying- I heartv mets say ohh long island has the sea breeze and they get jealous as if it's 75 here or something. The "sea breeze" here isn't much better than it is in the Louisiana swamps and smells just as bad......
  4. You think one of these years, NASA will explode a nuke on an otherwise mundane comet just to give us a show ;-)
  5. aint that the truth. I'm waiting for another one of these "great" comets, I dont think we've had any in our lifetimes?
  6. I dont have any honey bees but plenty of bumbles, they're always welcome in my yard, and I dont think they sting anyone who doesn't bother them. I do keep my distance from them though...... Once last year one somehow got into my bedroom and I grabbed a pair of gloves and gently put him/her back outside on a flower and s(he) went on their way as if nothing had happened.
  7. JFK is great for radiational cooling, much more like the south shore of Nassau County. It also cools down faster in the fall during early season snowfall events ;-)
  8. this sucks, I like very dry heat, humidity causes air pollution issues and this damned sea breeze which looks cooler on the thermometer but doesn't feel cooler because the humidity is higher! I wish they'd put in a sea wall to keep the "sea breeze" out!
  9. oh no- if DC had hit 90 today they would likely have had it for 30+ straight days...oh well, there may be more opportunities, who knows they may start another 20+ day streak starting tomorrow!
  10. ah I see, I was thinking that JFK is more representative of coastal parts of NYC like southern Bklyn and southern Queens, and EWR is more representative of the other parts of the city. Both are better radiational coolers than either NYC or LGA. If we use a four location composite is the data still comparable to the four site composite prior to 1996 (before ASOS was used.) And would 2010 rank as our hottest summer (and hottest month) on record both by avg temp and by number of 90 degree days?
  11. there is only one very hot summer with an east coast up this way that I can think of Chris, and that was 1944. That year really stands out for the hot summer (part of the 11 yr cycle of course) and the big east coast tropical hit.....
  12. wow nice statistical write up, Don! If we were to only use one of the four sites, which is most representative? EWR? Or if we were to use an avg of two, would it be EWR+JFK?
  13. Walt I understand the historical significance but isn't the data tainted if the foliage isn't pruned back and/or removed? How come no one from the NWS comes to do that or tells the park conservancy to do it? It should be some kind of executive order lol
  14. take the avg of all four or simply take the avg of EWR and JFK......
  15. the most representative sites seem to be JFK for coastal Brooklyn and Queens and EWR for the rest of the area. Both radiate far better than either NYC or LGA.
  16. scientifically speaking it's consistent if all the other measuring locations are airports. airport=airport=airport airport<>park
  17. Don do you think DC gets its new 90 day streak record? Today was supposed to be close.....
  18. lol here's something funny.....I actually played some common bird sounds I hear on my iPad and I heard those birds calling back from my yard......one was a Grosbeak and the other was an Oriole.
  19. glad I dont have THAT! mine was just plain metallic shiny black, only flew a few inches lol. I haven't seen it any more. I was thinking the hissing was some kind of exotic insect (or snake?!), but that's in my Long Island home. The vultures are what I saw in my vacation spot in the Poconos.
  20. thanks JC! I was wondering if I should wait until it's a bit higher in the sky, but I want it to be brighter than Mag 4, so I guess July 23rd is the best time to see it (both Mag 3 and higher in the sky) Either way, starting this weekend, our skies look to cooperate!
  21. was mentioned on TWC when they interviewed a beekeeper
  22. and the triplet of Mars Jupiter and Saturn later on at night! If you've got a very long zoom lens you can capture the structure of the ISS!
  23. I certainly hope so.....do you think they are the source for this weird long loud hissing sound I hear during the day (and also sometimes at night?) I thought it was coming from outside, but sometimes it seems very nearby. I cant stand waterbugs, I thought they were limited to tropical climates. One time I was vacationing in Mexico and I woke up to something biting me on the neck and it was a flying waterbug (or cockroach as you said). It was HUGE. The thing I saw last night-- I thought it was a beetle because I was trying to smash it with my hand (with gloves on of course) but it kept getting away, and I've only known beetles in the insect world to have a shell hard enough to withstand the full weight of a human. Are you saying it can come up from a different drain?
  24. Chris is this also why we haven't seen a 100 degree day here in so long- last summer was the closest we've gotten since 2013.
  25. you can actually see the solar panels on the ISS on pictures taken with long zoom cameras!
