  1. why are we still allowing for development along the shore? I know that Miami, New Orleans, Charleston, and NYC all have plans to replenish the sand and even build sea walls to keep the ocean at bay, but at some point it wont be enough. NYC has a trillion dollar plan to extend the coast outwards.
  2. I hope today didnt ruin the chances for an 80 avg.....the forecast for today was really blown by the local mets, no one expected a washout
  3. and no sea breeze on Monday, so maybe JFK can hit 100? I've heard it's going to cool down after the middle of next week, so if it's going to happen at all this summer it'll have to be next week.
  4. I'm hearing that this is going to be the end of the big heat for awhile, so if we're going to hit 100 this summer it'll probably be on Monday. After the middle of next week, looks like we're going to go back down to normal temps for awhile.
  5. Yes, that will make Saturn a nice target for my camera. Even without a telescope it can be done with a nice long lens (around 600mm EFL.)
  6. This has an amazing map showing where Neowise is: https://theskylive.com/planetarium?obj=c2020f3&date=2020-07-20&h=00&m=00#ra|11.840402637121267|dec|45.5351978494491|fov|80
  7. it's being reported near Babylon (south of Montauk Hwy) too!
  8. Looks like that predicted methane release from Siberia may be right around the corner....
  9. Yesterday was the way heat is supposed to be! lol NYC was 4 degrees cooler than JFK
  10. Yesterday was the way heat is supposed to be! lol NYC was 4 degrees cooler than JFK
  11. Chris, I thought we were supposed to cool down over the weekend and the heat was going to return next week?
  12. isn't today the day that Newark hit 108 in 2011? I remember some said that even that was a lowball, it was more like 110.
  13. I used to do that as a teenager. That was back in the early 90s lol.
  14. they need to quit building airports near bodies of water (particularly with sea level rise)....any data on when JFK will be going underwater from sea level rise (unless they move its location like they are doing with some military bases)?
  15. You saw it from Manhattan? How high up was it?
  16. isn't supposed to be closest to the earth on Thursday?
  17. it's the side effects of it, like an overpopulation of nuisance insects and the lengthening allergy season.
  18. Wait, that was a year before Hale-Bopp? I wonder why I dont remember it in NY, maybe it couldn't be seen from here?
  19. I wonder if we'll get the much needed turnaround next summer? If any summer can do it, it'll be next year's.
  20. bleh I thought JFK reached 90 here yesterday? We did (just barely) hit 90 here in SW Nassau. TV Met on ABC said "all NYC airports hit 90"
  21. Yes, it seems like things changed after the 90s, before then NYC was fairly consistent with the rest of the area with its 90+ numbers.
  22. 2010 agrees well with my own observations that it was our hottest summer EVER :-) However I found both 2016 and 2005 to be lackluster because of lack of 100 degree temps on the coast. I have my own list for the hottest summers and these are them in chronological order: 1991 1993 1999 2010 2011 honorable mention goes to 1983 and 1995 and 2002. I find the number of 90 degree days and number of 100 degree days to be more important than avg temps when I gauge which summers are the "hottest." That 10 day streak of 90+ and 3 straight 100+ in July 1993 really stand out to me as the hottest weather I've ever experienced here. The streak of 3 days out of 4 at 100+ at JFK in 2010 comes close, but that was a drier (nicer) heat. Overall though 2010 > 1993 and they are both in my short list for hottest summers. If I had to go back in time I'd say 1966 belongs on this list too, possibly second only to 2010 for its streak of 100+ And 1953 because of that record streak of 90+ and 100+ in late August and September!
  23. this weather is BORING, I'd much rather hit 100 here.
