October has shown itself to be the month where we get our strongest TC (at least over the last 15 years or so). Not that most sane people want that to impact them.

Yes plus snowcover seems to disappear pretty quickly on the south shore later in the season even when it's still cold enough....I think it has to do with being near the ocean and also all the concrete around..... But Dec 26-Feb 14 was an extremely long snow cover and it lasted that long even down here!

Yes, Jan 2016 was more memorable than any other single event this decade (and maybe of my life). 2010-11 extended snowcover winter was something to behold too, pity it died in February, it was on the way to being our best winter ever. Had that winter persisted, we could have gotten 100" of snow that winter, like some of the greatest pre-1900 winters.

That brings up another point. I think you'll see a far quicker adoption of EV cars out west and in the northeast than you will in the deep south or the middle of the country. Especially with new CA and NY emissions laws.

what I liked about 14-15 was that the winter was both extremely cold and snowy and we had prolonged snowcover, especially in February and March! Reminded me of 1966-67 in some ways.....Jan 2016 made up for the Jan 2015 debacle lol. 2013-14 was annoying to me because of how we mixed over to sleet and rain so often with snow just barely to our north....and then areas to our south got hit in March while we missed out lol

Yes! The one which immediately comes to my mind is 2015-16, what a wild winter that was! JFK 40"+ of snow and 40 degree F avg winter temp! Was even below zero on Valentine's Day! Also going from 2014-15 to 2015-16 was a huge shock (one of the coldest Feb in 2015 to the warmest Dec in 2015).

That was like a mini version of the Jan 2016 long duration blizzard! Didn't the Jan 2018 bomb have a record storm surge at Boston, surpassing the one from Feb 1978?

Thanks, Don! The earliest freezing temp at FOK? I see we were down in the mid 40s again at JFK! Looks like we had a similar cool streak in 2000 and that was a la nina winter too, I guess it will come down to December if we have a snowy winter or not.....

Yep and that would be a sad commentary on the US if China leaves them behind....it means we'd probably be wearing masks for air pollution reasons within a few decades. Have you found any numbers on when the US is going to stop making fossil fuel powered cars? I mean, if Europe and Asia do it, the US would probably not have a choice in the matter, the manufacturers will stop making them regardless of our laws, I think fossil fuel powered vehicles are already losing ground to EVs here?

Yes, I think they need to realize that "standing still" is the same as going backwards. Time is always moving forward, so if you're not moving forward too, you're going backwards. Shortsightedness like we're seeing today, had it been implemented in the past, wouldn't have gotten us this far. And if the US doesn't take the lead here, we'll be left far behind China and other nations that are moving forward. China has quite the booming EV market already.

astrophysics, I love it ;-) the cosmological constant may be better explained if we have a multiverse and a cyclic big bounce universe via black hole cosmology ala Poplawski's conjecture with a CC that's slowly winding down (as indicated by some supercomputer simulations). But that is way OT lol.

we're building 300 miles of windfarms offshore in NY and NJ...... I have read an indepth analysis of them and they do not increase bird deaths, because they use good AI algorithms that allow them to shut off a section of the windfarm when birds are approaching. They are quite effective. Many more bird deaths occur when birds slam into windows than windfarms. In addition to that, these coastal windfarms may lower the energy of oncoming TC's (somewhat).

Don it is interesting if one substitutes the available evidence into some other field of science in an analogous way then the evidence is readily accepted by everyone outside of the extreme fringe (whom we label "flat earthers" and the like.) I have to think that there is effective propaganda that is corrupting the minds of those who would otherwise be more objective about this. Just looking at the new data coming in on how fast sea level is rising is quite sobering- it's as bad as the worst case scenario models said it would be. But I still have hope.....Europe seems to be closing the era on fossil fuel powered vehicles:

This is some good news- most of Europe will stop making fossil fuel powered vehicles by 2030. I couldn't find any nation which didn't have plans to stop making them between 2030 and 2040 outside of Australia, not surprising considering what kind of govt they have and who funds them. They will likely be left behind.

Yes New Zealand has one of my favorite leaders, quickly acted on gun reform and the pandemic too. My question for you Don is that if we dont even agree on what needs to be done until 2050, wouldn't that mean that the much needed action we need right now wouldn't happen until 2100? Meanwhile I see that sea level rise is actually occurring at the pace on the most bullish of models and at this rate, sea level rise will be around 8 feet by 2100?! To put this into more immediate numbers, right now we average around 4 days of flooding per year, by 2050 this could be more like 50 days of flooding per year?

Looks like Muttontown was down around 37. Anyone have any numbers out of FOK? Did they get below freezing for the first time this season? I'm still in NE PA (coming back tomorrow) we had a frost here, low was 28 degrees at Blakeslee, which is the closest station I could find to my location.

we had upper 20s in mid October a few years ago on the South Shore. I dont remember what year it was but it was after 2014 and RJay was quite excited about it heh.

With all this cold, what is causing it to end up above normal? We should just go by the last 10 years, 30 years ago is ancient history and not representative of our current climate.
