  1. Have a read, it's from Scientific American: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/offshore-wind-farms-could-knock-down-hurricanes1/#:~:text=An intriguing new computer simulation, storm surge by 79 percent. and while we're talking about replacing fossil fuels: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-to-power-the-world/
  2. They're setting up enclosed bubbles to keep outdoor customers warm and may even use propane heaters.
  3. I think Summit Camp in Greenland is colder than Klinck, but they've only been keeping records for a few years there. It's at the top of the Greenland Ice Cap. I still like Siberia better for temperature anomalies, because it's the only place on earth that can go from -90 to +90 (and even 100 now.)
  4. Speaking of Greenland, did you see that the WMO finally recognized that -93.3 temp at Klinck, Greenland from 12/22/91 as the coldest ever recorded in the Northern Hemisphere? Personally I feel that Summit Camp is colder, but they've only kept records for a few years there at the top of the ice cap on Greenland. It's colder than the coldest parts of Siberia though, but doesn't get anywhere near as warm in the summer.
  5. One thing that's really weird is that both the west and the northeast have been very dry this year.....it isn't just CA and OR that are in severe drought, so is RI......some interesting numbers..... Medford has gone 100 days without measurable rain in Oregon. Las Vegas has gone 156 days without measurable rain Both of the above are records. Hartford has only had 21 inches of rain so far this year, their 3rd driest on record. Concord, NH has only had 18 inches of rain so far this year, their 8th driest on record. Meanwhile the Southeast has been consistently flooded out right from the start of the year.
  6. Colder than the weather we just went through, Walt? 30 degrees this morning at MPO
  7. Having a couple of weeks of nice clear skies and low humidity isn't going to kill you lol, the stormy weather will be back soon enough. Better to get this now rather than in the middle of winter when cold air sometimes gets wasted.
  8. Yep we have significantly better and longer snowcover when it snows in December.......
  9. yeah and fu Boston too lol It's the first time I've ever seen freezing drizzle on the east end of LI on an onshore wind....the water temps were THAT cold! We were in the single digits for lows on the last day of Feb, wow. And had a big snow in March..... The only other time I remember such big late season cold was back in 2017-18 I think it was when we had the four big noreasters in March and then had a significant snowstorm in early April to boot? If we could've superimposed that March-April to Jan-Feb, it would have outdone all the other winters of the decade.....
  10. I think there's an index that ranks seasons by "snowfall quality" and the severity of winter cold....2014-15, 2010-11, 2002-03, 1995-96, 1977-78, 1960-61, 1947-48, 1933-34, 1917-18 and 1898-99 are near the top of that list.
  11. October has shown itself to be the month where we get our strongest TC (at least over the last 15 years or so). Not that most sane people want that to impact them.
  12. Yes plus snowcover seems to disappear pretty quickly on the south shore later in the season even when it's still cold enough....I think it has to do with being near the ocean and also all the concrete around..... But Dec 26-Feb 14 was an extremely long snow cover and it lasted that long even down here!
  13. Yes, Jan 2016 was more memorable than any other single event this decade (and maybe of my life). 2010-11 extended snowcover winter was something to behold too, pity it died in February, it was on the way to being our best winter ever. Had that winter persisted, we could have gotten 100" of snow that winter, like some of the greatest pre-1900 winters.
  14. That brings up another point. I think you'll see a far quicker adoption of EV cars out west and in the northeast than you will in the deep south or the middle of the country. Especially with new CA and NY emissions laws.
  15. what I liked about 14-15 was that the winter was both extremely cold and snowy and we had prolonged snowcover, especially in February and March! Reminded me of 1966-67 in some ways.....Jan 2016 made up for the Jan 2015 debacle lol. 2013-14 was annoying to me because of how we mixed over to sleet and rain so often with snow just barely to our north....and then areas to our south got hit in March while we missed out lol
  16. hmmm does that mean FOK had its shortest growing season on record this year?
  17. what percentage of cars driven here are actually made here though? European and Asian policies should affect us significantly.
  18. Yes! The one which immediately comes to my mind is 2015-16, what a wild winter that was! JFK 40"+ of snow and 40 degree F avg winter temp! Was even below zero on Valentine's Day! Also going from 2014-15 to 2015-16 was a huge shock (one of the coldest Feb in 2015 to the warmest Dec in 2015).
  19. Thanks, Don. Let's see if we can get the longest freeze season on record....when was the latest ever freeze at FOK, Don? I think it may have been around the summer solstice actually, in June 1967?
  20. That was like a mini version of the Jan 2016 long duration blizzard! Didn't the Jan 2018 bomb have a record storm surge at Boston, surpassing the one from Feb 1978?
  21. I like this weather for stargazing, glad the clouds are staying away
  22. Thanks, Don! The earliest freezing temp at FOK? I see we were down in the mid 40s again at JFK! Looks like we had a similar cool streak in 2000 and that was a la nina winter too, I guess it will come down to December if we have a snowy winter or not.....
  23. Should be 4 nights in a row, what were the local area lows this morning?
  24. Yep and that would be a sad commentary on the US if China leaves them behind....it means we'd probably be wearing masks for air pollution reasons within a few decades. Have you found any numbers on when the US is going to stop making fossil fuel powered cars? I mean, if Europe and Asia do it, the US would probably not have a choice in the matter, the manufacturers will stop making them regardless of our laws, I think fossil fuel powered vehicles are already losing ground to EVs here?
  25. Yes, I think they need to realize that "standing still" is the same as going backwards. Time is always moving forward, so if you're not moving forward too, you're going backwards. Shortsightedness like we're seeing today, had it been implemented in the past, wouldn't have gotten us this far. And if the US doesn't take the lead here, we'll be left far behind China and other nations that are moving forward. China has quite the booming EV market already.
