Those mountains are pretty high, there are probably places there that average more snow than we do. Elevation usually trumps latitude.

I'm quite excited about it, the best event since that one in January when it snowed on and off all day. That was also on a Saturday.

Is this an all daytime snow? Something like noon to 6 pm for start and end times?

Yes that one....JFK measured 6" I think so I just used those numbers for us, but it was probably 8-9 just a bit less than the 9.2 at NYC. 20 inches once you got to Port Jefferson though and as great as the other two big ones were that season.

Remember that middle storm in January 2011....I think you were living in SW Nassau and we had what-- 6 inches in that storm? Even less than NYC which had 9". And out where you are now, it was well over a foot, maybe 20"? It's so different compared to here, and it's not even a smooth rise, it's like the snowfall amounts take a big jump when you get to Huntington. And I specifically picked that storm because there were no mix or rain issues at all, it just blossomed late and hit that region much harder than it hit the rest of us.

So those early April snows we sometimes get had an early September sun angle.

North Shore of Suffolk County actually reminds me of southern CT especially with how they benefit from late blooming Miller B's. Say the area from Huntington out to Wading River.

and they're very underrated, especially if it snows all day long with no breaks with temps in the 20s.

Our forecasts are always the ones with the highest bust potential. I think even if you go back to the 80s and 90s, it's much easier to make snow predictions for both DC and Boston than it is for NYC. Also completely agree about Suffolk County having more of a New England climate, you can see it when you compare the biggest snowstorms there, they line up with Boston's biggest snowstorms rather than NYC's.

why use climate averages at all? this to me is an example of pseudoscience. who decided that 30 year averages should be used? that's a subjective decision-- I'd much rather they show the actual temperatures not some proclaimed climate "average"

This is going to be WAY more interesting than the Monday night event. Also happening during the day with temps in the 20s so all snow everywhere! I could see us getting an inch.

Man even the Poconos were way warmer than Long Island today. So this wasn't really about latitude but how far away from the water you are?

last two springs have been warm and dry though. we're not really peasants, at least we're not DC and Baltimore and Philly although our climate is much more like them than it is like Boston. Not sure why people always want to compare NYC to Boston.

Yes the only good thing about 07-08 here was the February 22nd storm.

2001-02 still ranks higher to me than 2011-12 does because 2011-12 had the October snowstorm at least, which was historic.

Yes this is much more so a N of NYC storm so not optimistic about this area. A lot of the 80s and early 90s storms were like this

Amazing how cold 2015 was this late in the season! Do you have the last single digit low that occurred at NYC, JFK, LGA, EWR? Was it on the 28th? Also when was the last time these locations had a single digit low in March? Thanks!

You do! Granted this winter has sucked everywhere but it has sucked more for some of us than others. I'm at 0.2 snowfall officially, though unofficially it's probably more like 0.8 Splitting hairs really!
