it snowed for about 30 min here lol and then it switched to drizzle and now it looks like the sun is trying to come out

Well I can only go by own experience why we don't get wet snow bombs at 36 degrees here this late in the season. What usually happens is it sticks when it's falling hard and as soon as the rates lighten up, whatever fell melts. That has happened 100% of the time here in all sorts of winters this late in the season. Including ones much colder than this one.

Actually does remind me of a somewhat less strong and less duration version of December 1992. That one lasted for 3 days with high winds and heavy rain which changed to snow on the last day to give us 1-2 inches.

See, I don't need snow to experience a massive historic storm. The most impressive ones actually don't have any snow with them (or very little snow at all.) December 1992 will always go down in my mind as the greatest coastal storm of all time for this area. What's going to happen on Tuesday can be historic without a single flake of snow being seen here.

I have a hard time believing it will even be 2" Is this going to be it for the season Don? I noticed the storm for next weekend has trended warmer, so maybe this will be the last for the accumulating snow after the 14th?

But it's normal for it to happen late. That's why March 1888 and February 1978 were once in a century events. We really need to name them.

Finally changed to snow on Long Island at 8:30 am Looks like it's going to be just a trace for here.

We had that a week or so after the January 1996 blizzard..... roofs of homes and a supermarket collapsed when we had that big rain storm!

Not verified but on NOAA weather radio I remember hearing their announcements that night about whiteout blizzard like conditions being forecast for the Hamptons and other parts of Eastern Long Island. 1995 was the first year I got a radio with NOAA weather on it and I was so lucky to have that. It was snowing back here pretty hard too, but nothing like that.

Thanks! I wish we calculated average temps the same way! I like your way MUCH better than comparing them to some shadow "average" temp that changes every 30 years.

London had a huge snowstorm this season, I think about a foot of snow?

I think we'll end the season with under 5 inches so it should still be #2. Very similar to 2001-02.

Interesting how 1997-1998 was a full two degrees colder than 2001-02 and wow 1972-73 was a super cold winter! 35.6 average temp? You don't get that much cold even in our snowiest winters anymore! Both of the above just give me more confidence that 2001-02 was the worst winter here. Or best if you take it the other way. Don, just a minor issue, but if Tables 2 and 4 are supposed to be the same except for excluding 2022-23 in Table 2, how come the scores for each winter in Table 4 are different from the scores listed in Table 2?

Hey Don, can you compile a list of our top 10 best winters for snowfall and our top 10 worst winters for snowfall and find out what enso conditions prevailed in them? Thanks a bunch, it would be interesting to know how much of our ideas are correct, like la ninas after el ninos being among our snowiest winters, etc. An interesting feature of JFM this year is that the average monthly temp has basically flatlined around 42 degrees lol.....all three months may have a very similar average temperature. Has NYC ever had that happen for ANY three month period before?
