Yeah strange setup for sure that none for the models really seemed to pick up well. Band never really got going over the metro but am surprised we’ve still had a light snow constantly all day that’s put down 2” here. Can see the sun burning through the clouds they are so thin but still producing snowfall. Just nice having a snowpack and adding fresh onto it. Really a near perfect winter day IMO.

Y’all get your sweet potatoes? -
Nice it is feeling like winter should feel finally! Cold.. Nice snow pack going. Have a perfect base that 17" of synoptic is down to probably 8-10" compressed and its so thick even walking on it i'm still 3-4" off the ground. Next two weeks overall looking promising to maintain and add here and there to the snow pack. When was the last time WNY as a whole had such a solid snow pack region wide that held for more than a week? Feel like all its been recently is storm and snow otg for 3-4 days then thaw melt wait wait wait wait wait repeat... Do we have to go back to Jan/Feb 2014?

...Accumulating lake snows possible Saturday night northeast and east of both lakes... A clipper low and its associated cold front will near the region late Saturday afternoon and evening. The cold front will then quickly work from west to east across the area Saturday night. Lake snows will then develop off both lakes as colder air rushes in behind the front with 850 hPa dropping off to -14C/-15C. BUFKIT profiles show equilibrium levels will briefly rise to 8K feet with enough moisture extending through the DGZ. That said, the concern will be residence time over any given location. Guidance (Canadian- NH/RGEM) suggests that the Lake Erie band will waffle around a bit before settling well to the south across far S. Erie and Chautauqua Co. on Sunday Off Lake Ontario, a fairly decent band is advertised to form which then slowly drops south across Jefferson, Lewis, and then Oswego Co Saturday night into Sunday. Considering that liquid water/snow rations will approach 20:1 or even higher advisory level snows seem easily obtainable. Cant`even rule out low end warning amounts despite the short residence time of the bands off both lakes. Right now, it still looks like Lake Ontario will have the best shot at producing warning snowfall. Off Erie, lighter amounts are anticipated due to the advertised band waffling around before it moves south. Will mention the lake effect snow potential in the HWO for now. mmmmm Waffles…

Have not done the cave of the winds of maid of the mist in probably 25 years, we use to go every summer for a day trip as kids and always did both. Need to put it on my list to do this summer. Another cool attraction (few miles north of the park) they have the jet boat rides through the lower rapids and now that it an awesome trip! -

It happens occasionally. If there is a wind storm and seiche with an ice buildup on the lake, the boom is actually anchored to the lake floor and designed to sink under the ice during high winds to prevent it from just being ripped apart and failing. Here is some video I took in 2018 on the pier under the peace bridge (the crazy ice flows are around 25 second mark). In doing this it does allow a period where ice can rush downstream into the river and eventually the falls. The volume and speed of that ice flow was just mind boggling, and it ran like that for 3-4 hours if I remember correctly. -

I didn’t think it did but the Ice Boom actually had a huge impact on the falls ice build up. The falls themselves never freeze up but the gorge use to be a sight. Back then if it was cold enough ice flows would rush down and over the falls and jam up in the gorge. Use to be a big winter time attraction in the late 1800s and early 1900s The Ice Bridge they called it. Could walk from US to Canada side, sledding hills, just crazy to think about doing something like that today. 1930s the ice flows were so high the honeymoon steel truss bridge over the gorge literally had its anchors ripped out of the gorge walls and collapsed. Was said the worst winters the ice could grow as much as 100’ high against the gorge walls. Today most you’ll really see is the mountains of ice that accumulate on the rocks under the American Falls and maybe a standard ice sheet in the lower river but like Delta said only in real long cold winters sustained with multiple days of single digits or less.
