  1. yep - it's the same as you see in other major urban cores. In NYC, it really only cools down at night in winter if there is a north wind coming down the Hudson - otherwise you get days where it's like a high of 35 and a low of 29 or something.
  2. LOL - the streak continues at DCA with a low of 22F. It's really getting insane that we can't get below 20. Next chance on Tuesday it looks like.
  3. where KSHD is located is really perfect for these types of radiational cooling nights. It's a field basically in the middle of nowhere square in the middle of the valley.
  4. 25F at midnight at DCA. I think we'll break through the 22F record, but 20F is gonna be tougher.
  5. here's what some distance from the urban centers and elevation will do: KSHD (Staunton) - 6F KDCA - 25F
  6. i'd suspect it's pretty close. The center of the heat island is actually around Columbia Heights / Petworth, and they tend to run warmer than DCA. I'm downtown and I'm usually really close to them at night. During the day I'm warmer bc of the river, usually.
  7. yeah it is probably more on par with downtown. My station hasn't been in the teens since 2019.
  8. "The Streak" is officially in jeopardy folks - DCA (and most of central DC / Arlington) has not gotten below 22F in 1070 days (since Feb 2019), which is just... insane. The airport was sitting at 27 at the last hour but is pretty steady.
  9. That's awful. I'll stick to leesburg! not to derail this thread too much, but it was you or Matt who got excited when I mentioned heavy sleet on whatever WWBB thread we were on, saying that will end up being really heavy snow by the time it gets to you guys. lol i'll never forget that.
  10. light snow downtown - vis starting to drop just a bit
  11. omfg same. It started at night with a huge burst of snow - sleet when I woke up the next morning. Sucked.
  12. FLURRIES HAVE COMMENCED IN OUR NATION'S CAPITAL
  13. How did you do in 96 2003 2016? 2003 was a huge sleet mess in C'ville (I was in school there at that point) - still about 12" of accumulation but the best stuff was about 100 miles to the north.
  14. Jan 2016 in NYC is a close second (about 30" with strong winds - and we lived in Battery Park City so HUGE drifts) - but 96 will always be the king.
  15. still the greatest storm in my lifetime. About 3 feet in the Shenandoah Valley.
  16. elevation is a factor - cities in the Shenandoah Valley almost always do better.
  17. JFK's famous line: "Washington is a city of Southern efficiency and Northern charm"
  18. Man our snowpack is getting wrecked rn. 40/35 downtown at 1am.
  19. snowshoe really is a different climate entirely.
  20. heat island comin in STRONG tonight. We are still in the low 30s lol.
