I'm curious why we seem to hit our peak heat in June and then have "cold" shots in August.  Shouldn't that be reversed?  Is that just recency bias?

Kind of an interesting dynamic.  This is looking forward to winter, but that dominant -PDO is something to note from this summer, how it may affect our winter.

I can't remember, is that good or bad for winter?

Generally worse for snow in the East.  The overall regime from the last decade+ was a -PDO-led pacific, which has resulted in a sort of snow dearth, particularly along the East Coast.

Granted, we don't rely on quite the same mechanisms here in the mountains, but decreasing snow chances can impact us just the same.  Especially true if you're hunting for a big one.

Will be interesting to see whether the Youghiogheny River Lake approaches the lows of last autumn.

Currently, around 1415.8' ASL. Looks like it fell to around 1,369' in early November 2024, although I'm not sure of the exact low. Further research suggests a low of about 1,362' in December 1998, and a value in 1991 of about 6' higher than that. The December 21, 1998 low was said to have been exceeded twice, in 1954 & 1957. Not sure we reach as low as last fall unless October is dry, but decent odds of dropping below 1,400' again. Not sure when the "ghost bridge" becomes visible.

Some areas down this way have been getting crushed with rain the last couple hours.

Surprised not to see any posts from our Chalk Hill poster.

I was at my camp just 20 some miles from home but my daughter was home and said it was pouring with huge drops for an hour, then a break then more of it! Totally needed….it barely hit me where I was in confluence….

Today is the 15th day with a high of 80+ this September.

Septembers with 14+ days of 80+, 1952-2014 (63 years): 9

Septembers with 14+ days of 80+, 2015-2025 (11 years): 7

Crazy that something that used to happen about once every 7 years is now happening more years than not.

I'd had an observational theory for years that summer was lasting longer, but the data is now more-or-less confirming it.  It is a relatively small sample size in the grand scheme of things, but we know it is warming, regardless.

The next question for me is how does this affect winter long-term.  I thought maybe we were moving to a 6-and-6 type split of winter and summer (six months each), but it is possible we see abbreviated winters and then those transition months that still resemble fall and spring.  Maybe a 2-2-2 approach.

This is decadal or longer in timeframe as the climate (gradually?) shifts.  In the short-term, really any outcome remains possible.

Despite a couple inches of rain last week, the reservoir levels have continued to decline. Should drop to 1,399' tomorrow. Further research shows it got down to at least 1,364' last year, maybe even a couple feet lower. Not sure of the final tally. Still aways to go before reaching those levels again, but with the current forecast could be looking at 1,380' later in the month.

A little bit of D3 - Extreme Drought introduced to a small part of southwest Pennsylvania:

Some improvement in the drought situation locally, but still dry in most places. The dry grounds really absorbed a lot of the rain, so area lakes and rivers are still quite low.

This is where my camp is-it’s really

low but nowhere near last years. If I could post a photo of me walking across the bridge that is normally under water I would. Still-another crappy year where they drained the lake sI much to accommodate the kayakers and rafters on the yough river in Ohiopyle…..not caring about us boaters at the yough lake-such a shame to drain this gorgeous lake so the money makers stay in business…

Definitely had some solid frost each of the last two mornings in my area, especially heavy on the rooftops. Did not drop below freezing though on my thermometer.
