Thanks for the thread and warning Midlo.

Isabel was a huge pain in the tuckus, I was without power 14 days, yes, 14 days but I was living in a different house and area.

Irene I was out for only 24 hours but it did interrupt our fantasy football draft, ugh! But, it was an over performer, I did not expect the impact.

Gaston trapped me downtown for about 8 hours before I could get out.

Other than getting a generator, trying to think of other prep work...

Batteries, flashlights and radio, check,

Gutters, I cannot reach all of them on this house but I will check the those that I can get to.

Taking everything in from the patio.

Tie down my newer trees.

Get ready to flip the gas fireplace on when it is cool enough so I have that as a heat source if the power fails.

Propane tank for the gas grill for cooking and boiling water.

Anything else you guys can think of?

Cutting down limbs and trees that might have an eye for my house all day. Hard not to root for Sandy to smack us given I might not see another storm like her, but the almost assured damage and possible loss of life sure does suck.

welcome aboard. yea life looks far from normal next week.

I was in OBX just two weeks ago, sort of wish I was on the coast now because even if the power goes out, you have live entertainment watching the ocean plus, I think I always wanted to be holed up in a bar or tavern near the beach during a major storm.

Good call on the 2 stroke oil and gas, I am set there as well although haven't used that chainsaw since Isabel, I should probably test it.

Like highest wind gust recorded at RIC?

I thought we had an 80+ during Isabel. Going totally off memory though. Irene was bad but Isabel, it looked like bombs went off in neighborhoods.

OK, with Anthony not available did a little research between panicked work calls, we have branch offices on the coast, anyway, it looks like Isabel's largest gust was 73MPH.

EDIT - Thanks Yoda, yeah, I was over zealous on Isabel. Trying to find the largest recorded gust now. I can only hope that RIC's tracking of wind gusts is more accurate than their snowfaill measurement...that one is for you Kevin Druff!

Yeah been eyeing the tree thing myself. Have been working on a large PV solar array and left some large oaks just to the North of it thinking that I would not have to worry about them, so now the direction of the winds from the storm will likely be from the North axesmiley.png .

If it stays below 40 MPH perhaps no concern, but if it gets to 50-60 MPH then I am tempted to fell them tomorrow in advance of the storm.

Where is the best place to get an idea of the windfield from this thing? Looking at the NWS they seem to be taking a conservative outlook but if the above solution Midlo posted verifies then it will be oh ****e time.

AKQ looks like it will put out wind advisories later tonight.

WINDS:

N-NE WINDS WILL BE BREEZY TONIGHT...THEN INCREASE SUBSTANTIALLY ON

SUNDAY. EXPECT STRONG WINDS TO SHIFT TO THE W-NW SUNDAY AND PERSIST

THROUGH TUESDAY. THE BIGGEST CHANGE TO THE ONGOING FORECAST WAS TO

PIVOT HIGHER GUSTS (UP TO 45-50 MPH) WEST INTO NRN COUNTIES AND TO

THE SOUTHWEST...ESSENTIALLY OVER INLAND AREAS FROM ASHLAND TO

FRANKLIN TO EDENTON NC. COASTAL AREAS ARE STILL SET TO EXPERIENCE

THE STRONGEST WINDS WITH SUSTAINED SPEEDS OF 35-40 MPH AND GUSTS OF

60-65 MPH. INLAND AREAS SHOULD EXPERIENCE STRONG BUT LESS INTENSE

SUSTAINED WINDS OF 25-30 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO GENERALLY 40 MPH. THE

LOWER EASTERN SHORE WILL BEAR THE BRUNT OF THE STORM WITH EVEN

STRONGER WINDS ON MONDAY WITH SUSTAINED WINDS OF 40 MPH AND GUSTS UP

TO 65 MPH. REGIONWIDE...THE LONG DURATION OF STRONG WINDS (OVER 48

HOURS) WILL LIKELY HAVE A LARGER IMPACT ON POTENTIAL POWER OUTAGES

THAN IF THE WINDS WERE STRONG FOR A SHORTER PERIOD OF TIME. THIS

COULD ALSO AFFECT RETURN TO SERVICE TIMES FOR ANYONE WHO LOSES POWER

DURING THIS STORM. VARIOUS WIND HEADLINES ARE POISED TO GO INTO

EFFECT LATER TONIGHT.
