Friday Night Into Saturday High Wind OBS And Discussion

I said this would probably underperform, very few strong wind events have verified.

March 2010 was a good one. Other than that, you are right, always seems to be on the low end of verification. Just think 20 years ago there was no such thing as a HWW or WA. They would just say it's going to be windy. If today were a school day around here, they'd find a way to have a delay or early dismissal for this.

Well now strongest winds were put off till later am/afternoon so well see

Probably just a typical late winter windy day, maybe some gusts reaching 40mph but nothing extraordinary. The only two times that I remember major winds were in March 2010 obviously, and with Ernesto in 2006. The latter was completely unexpected and had a very long duration, hurricane force gusts recorded at the jersey shore.

Honorable mention was probably Boxing day or the January snowstorm, some solid blizzard conditions for several hours.

True true, I'm hoping we can still maybe see some 60mph gust

We should be able to make to 50-55 mph from around the city airports but the best chance of approaching 60

may be Eastern Long island like we have seen several times this winter so far. We'll have to see how much low

level jet verifies once we see the really deep mixing this afternoon.

Upton 10:02am Update:

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

TIGHT PRESSURE GRADIENT REMAINS BETWEEN DEEPENING LOW PRES THAT

WILL MEANDER NEAR NEW BRUNSWICK AND HIGH PRES BUILDING INTO THE

MIDWEST. FORECAST MODEL SOUNDINGS DEPICTING A SOLID ADVISORY

EVENT AND ISOLATED HIGH WIND WARNING POTENTIAL TODAY. WILL

CONTINUE HIGH WIND WARNINGS AS IS BASED ON MORNING OBSERVATIONS

OVER THE BETTER MIXED NEARSHORE WATERS (48 KT AT NEW LONDON LEDGE

LIGHT HOUSE AND 44 KT AT ROBINS REEF). BELIEVE THESE ARE GOOD

INDICATORS OF MAX GUST POTENTIAL LATER THIS MORNING THROUGH THE

AFTERNOON.

Sounds like a solid event regardless
