I'll have to refresh my memory but I think that there are a number of issues with relying on satellite data. I know for one thing, it still has to be calibrated with in situ observations

Its overrated...as is apparent by the trivial differences between the 12z/00z runs and the off-hour runs. I'm sure it helps a little, but for the most part its probably not a huge difference. I think in certain setups it can be a bigger difference, but otherwise meh.

i agree. i've always felt and said it has an effect but it's just not that big and is overstated. the data coming in from airplanes and satellites is extremely good and covers the entire globe...if it weren't, the models would be a giant cluster.

the spacing in the sounding network is huge...especially out on the left coast.
