It might be for Sunday night and it would be the morning of the 18th, so more towards the latter part of April. I don't think there were any record lows at JFK lower than 40 after the 19th as far as I can recall. Their records only go back to 1960 though.

Record lows at JFK in the 30s as late as May 14, 1987.... looks like there were some as low as 34 all the way up through the first week of May.... many of these were in 1966 and 1967. I remember the 37 low on May 6, 1992, that was a really cool summer in the wake of Pinatubo and the high that day was in the upper 40s, with snow being reported as close as Morristown, NJ that day.

That 39 degree low on May 14, 1987 is impressive but even more impressive is the 34 degree low on May 10, 1966-- OUCH!

Yeah you fail

Maybe you were thinking the 19th of May? ;)

No lol-- I remembered looking this up before, and I think it was for the last time it hit 32.... (I was looking for the last freeze).... not the latest occurrence of 30s. Even though it was 34 degrees as late as May 10, 1966... the last occurrence of 32 or lower is still back in April.

Hmmm weird, I don't remember this but April 10, 1997 (10 days after the Fools Day storm), JFK had a low of 28? That was colder than the morning after the April 1996 snowstorm a year earlier when they got 5"!

The record for 4/18 is 35 from 2003.... that occurred 11 days after the snowstorm that dumped 7" here.... I don't remember that cold snap either lol. I thought it just warmed up a few days after the snowstorm and didn't get cold again.

April 1997 and 2003 were both quite chilly... and both had miserable April 18ths (though 1997 perhaps moreso, at least at TTN). Here's TTN:

YEAR-MO-DA HI LO PRCP SNOW
1997-04-18 46* 32* 0.48* 1.5*
2003-04-18 47* 36* 0* 0*

Looks like the last occurrence of 32 or lower is April 14, 1950 (how does JFK have records going back that far?) when it was supposedly 27.... weird, there is no other record low anywhere near that on any adjacent days, although it does look like the middle of April in 1950 was pretty cold (the low the day after was also a record, 33.) There was a low of 33 on April 17, 1980. So my formula still holds for below freezing lows, Ray :P

2003-04-18 47* 36* 0* 0*

Thanks, Ray... looks like when it snows in early April, even if it warms up and the snow melts a day or two after it falls, there are still some recurring shots of Arctic air. Looks like 2001 had some nasty cold April mornings too. There doesn't seem to be any nina/nino pattern to this-- looks like they're equally likely in both, even strong ninas and strong ninos. No connection to the following summers either-- 1966, 1980 and 1983 were scorchers, despite the late season chill; 1967, 1992, 1997, 2003 and 2008 not so much!

Thanks, Ray! It snowed on April 18, 1997? I don't even remember that lol. Were there any accumulations anywhere nearby?

The latest recent late occurrence of 32 degrees at JFK I can find was 32 on April 11, 2007.

Not since 2000 has there been an April that failed to reach 80 degrees in NYC.The streak continues.MAY 2003 and 2005 failed to reach 80 interestingly enough

It's interesting that from 2001-2010 that the warmth relative to the means has occurred in April over May.

the 2005 may have been a case of the central park 'cooler' than surrounding stations vegetation situation. 2003 was cool.

2003

Newark reached 80 on the 7th, then 81 on the 30th.

2005

Newark reached 80 on the 15th, 84 on the 27th and 80 on the 20th.

that was jet propelled...:P

The Spring's from the 1960's and 70's had some late cold many times...1961 had ice pellets in the air the last week in May...1967 was just as cold and gloomy...1966 and 1967 had some record cold in May...1963 and 1976 have the latest dates for temperatures in the 30's for Central Park...The period also has its share of record heat...low 90's in late April 1962 and near 100 in May...Record May heat in 1964 and 1965...

I remember that quite well. I was in school taking a test, and the snow distracted me pretty badly!

Trenton

How much did they record?

May 1996.... we had a thick frost here on the morning of 13th..... I remember that was a Monday morning, the weekend prior to that I was in the Poconos and we had severe weather Saturday and then light to moderate snow Saturday night into Sunday that accumulated a few inches. Drove back to Long Island and woke up to a thick frost Monday morning with a temp of 33-34. Looks like JFK's low was only 43 for that morning and I would have thought my digital thermometer was in error if it wasn't for the extremely thick frost outside that actually looked like a snowfall had occurred. Having the wisdom of accumulating data over several years, I now know that although Im only 4 miles from JFK and usually there isn't more than a 2-3 degree difference in low temps, there are certain rare times when we experience near perfect radiational cooling and the temp can be lower here by as much as 6-10 degrees than JFK even though the separation is only 4 miles. That was one of those mornings and my latest ever frost.

I wish someone could find some wunderground PWS records going back to 1996-- it would be nice to see the variations across the area on that morning.
