The thing 10/7 had going for it that this one doesn't is the thermodynamic environment. 10/7 featured some pretty decent low level lapse rates and mid level lapse rates around 7C/km. The timing here doesn't work out for low level lapse rates to be significantly steep, and mid level is pretty meh. Enough for thunder possibly but not robust convection.

That's where I'm at. Cape/Islands has some potential to go higher, but the LLJ cranks too late for most (even up here). Visions of derechos dance in your head.

My father in law started my wife investing in her teens, just putting a little away every month. Despite my salary advantage her 10 year head start probably has our accounts even at this point.

Undergrad was definitely my loan load, I had a similar arrangement with my MS. I don't think I was clearing 20k in stipend, but didn't pay a dime for classes otherwise (unless you want to count about $800 for a semester to extend my eligibility while writing my thesis). I lived in a cheap studio in Lowell near the Chelmsford line, and my sole goal was getting into the NWS. Even still I was lucky to have the job but no equity, but my wife was lucky to own her condo. So between the two of us we could flip that into a house. My biggest mistake was probably deferring my loans while I was in grad school. I probably should've found a way to pay the principal down. Only cost me a couple additional years of payments, but man it feels good to have that anchor gone.

I was mostly worried I would be a terrible parent. I've never been a kid person. I don't love other people's children, but boy do I love mine. None of it is easy, but I'll always be amazed at how instantly my whole world revolved around that little guy. Like Will said, underrated funny, but also underrated how much fun it is to watch them learn things. We have a 3'x4' USA puzzle, and I could sit for hours and watch him put it together. He's 2 and half and doesn't even need my help anymore. Gets all the edges done and then knows where all the states go (the Northeast is two big pieces so he gets a couple strokes for the little states ).

Not sure it's all garbage. Case number is rapidly rising, near exponential. If we start approaching 2000 deaths/day, it's off to the races I think. We've never seen a weather model waver either. I mean these disease models get new inputs all the time (cases, state-wide COVID precautions, mortality rates, etc). So it's not surprising that numbers and the prediction horizons change. I assume they are referencing the IMHE model, which is updating every 2-4 weeks, which is why the horizon keeps moving about a month each time.

Not unless COVID is spreading through the interwebs now. We've been holding our spotter training virtually and I drew the short straw with the first session and highest turnout.

One of Portland's ballot questions is related to our dispensaries. I guess law is 250' between dispensaries, but the referendum would change it to 100'. My thought was I'm pretty sure I can buy a four pack of craft beer every 100' on Commercial Street so why not edibles? If 100' is too close to be viable, one of the businesses will not make it.

The drought monitor product is a blend of Palmer Drought Severity Index, CPC soil moisture, streamflow, and precip over both short and long term periods. So probably a bit of a mixed signal in there up north, but yeah mostly academic.

I don't think we've been bad but everyone I've talked to locally that has had a test done is taking days to a week+ to get results back. And some of our better results could be because the reopening has been slow. The big caveat is precautions, if those are truly being taken there can be success. I think the Maine wedding is a really instructive example. A couple has their wedding, and whether it was intentionally blurring the lines on state guidelines or truly confusing the regs I don't know, somebody was sick and spread it. Through secondary and tertiary infections that spread to a jail, a church, a long term care facility, and likely into the York County school system. Seven people died that didn't go to the wedding.

We have a 9 week rotation, where each week is a different shift. Leads rotate backwards, so we do evenings, days, midnights. It's that midnight shock that kills me. Basically pull an all nighter to start, and then just as you're getting adjusted to that sleep pattern you are shocked back into a more normal day. Though now that I have a kid at home the evenings are tough too. Don't get home until 12:30 and if I'm lucky asleep by 1, and then I have to get up with him in the morning so my wife can work.

The shift itself isn't that bad, but how fast we rotate through is killer.

Even so, I'm not in favor of winging it and figuring out what the long term ramifications are later. Rather than continue down the COVID rabbit hole, all I'll say is there is zero reason why we shouldn't given widespread testing and tracing a go before full scale reopening.

With a quick cheek swap, you could get a test and have results while waiting for your drive thru Dunkin coffee.

Interesting, because it sounds like not everyone has a fever with COVID. That's where I see widespread rapid testing being useful. Even at 80% accuracy, you grab two of those and the chances you falsely test negative twice are pretty low (like 4%).
