Winter storm warning issued for a potent, quick hitting storm today and tonight. A foot of heavy wet snow is forecast here in the higher terrain along Superior, along with 40 mph winds later this evening. Should be a nice little event.
So nice outside today. It's currently 41/29. Not a bad start March at all. Snowpack is tight...no need for snowshoes, only sink about 7 inches when walking on top. Depth at 42" on my stake.
Picnic table visible now
This is about the earliest I can recall that I am ready for spring and could say goodbye to winter/snow today and be fine. Truth is tho, March is still a solid winter month here with an average of 35+ inches of snow. Normal high around 29 now.
I don't recommend anyone moving here just for the snow. There's a real sense of isolation that has to become normal. I've heard lots of stories of people moving here to retire or whatever and only make it a winter or two. Loving snow is one thing, loving up to seven months of it some years, is another.
Almost dying in 5' of snow during a blizzard seems to have really taken the passion out of your hobby. I rode through that area this fall and stopped to think how scary I'm sure that was and how alone that must have felt being so far from anyone or anything. It would have changed me I think.
There's been plenty of snow up here for riding for a while now.
Last winter was the deepest snow I had ever seen imby. 60 plus inches in late feb. At that depth, it's pretty much impossible to measure, just feel encapsulated by it a little bit. I still have high hopes for this winter.
Leaves have peaked, season's first snow is in the forecast, will certainly pale in comparison to west of here in the N plains, nonetheless, winter is very close to setting in here in Michigan's north woods.
