  1. True but it’s not a completely linear relationship, no? You still need forcing and a way to wring that moisture out. In the long term you can see it happen with the new 30-year normals when some spots gained like 6” annual water. But it still can come in cycles. Being warmer doesn’t mean the precip comes evenly spread either... maybe we end up with more cold season water and less in warm season? I could see some distribution changes... maybe less frequent precip events but when they do happen they are bigger water makers? All interesting to consider.
  2. Had to drive up to Derby on the Canadian border for an errand this afternoon... painful to be sitting in a car looking at this weather. Fantastic views and that lush, fresh light green of early warm season is pretty awesome. 10 out of 10 day.
  3. 2015 and 2017 weren’t wet? May/June those years up this way were very wet.
  4. Gotta pay for the wet 2000s and 2010s.
  5. The site seems pretty valid for that upper east side wall... as for skiing it's very similar to Nosedive, Bypass, Kitchen Wall, Bypass Chutes, Nosedive Glades, etc. The stake is nailed to that Birch tree. It is in a cold pocket facing northeast (much like the ski terrain in that area that holds snow so well and so long into the spring). It is right off the Toll Road, literally just like 10 yards or less from the road surface. The value in the Mansfield Stake though isn't the depth itself. I mean there's really nothing to compare it to on other mountains or even on Mansfield itself. So it's not something that can be used as a comparison to other areas, so in that regard the siting honestly doesn't mean that much to people. It's hard to say if it's right or wrong, but it seems representative of that area of the mountain. And it's well known to the local ski community because you pass it on your way up the Toll Road to steep back/side country terrain. The true value though is from it's period of record and it's consistency to compare to its own readings over time. Whether the siting is right or wrong, it's consistently right or wrong. Having depths from 1954 onward, gives it real value as a comparison to itself. And since it's been around for so long, skiers and riders know what the values mean. That's why we have so many benchmarks for ski terrain... at 25" you might be able to wander into some low angle woods very tentatively. At 40" the glades are generally skiable. At 60" most everything is skiable and in good shape depth wise. At 80-100" all of the big backcountry lines are full to go like the "Hundred Inch Chute". Things like that are even named based on the depth the stake is at when it's skiable.
  6. lol at 33F last night. Sneaky cold. From 90F to near freezing in a couple days. SLK 27F BML 30F HIE 30F
  7. Definitely some lean years the past 3-4 summers but plenty of surplus in the 2010s. Looking at the Mansfield data... May/June Average... 13.28" May/June 2017... 21.86" May/June 2015... 21.80" (15" June) May/June 2013... 24.55" May/June 2011... 21.82" Really odd that every other year was obscenely wet this time of year throughout the 2010s. I remember 2015 and 2017... just never stopped raining. Averaged a half an inch per day on the mountain for the entire month of June 2015 with major flash flooding events. Back when it rained and everyone on here kept commenting on mushrooms growing in their yards, ha.
  8. Yeah for sure, feel for the farmers if it's dry. I guess what I am getting at is that if I had to choose wet or dry summer, I'd go dry summer over the alternative of having it rain every other day and 6-7" monthly rain totals. For outdoor activities it's fantastic to stay dry. It can change in a hurry around these parts with large standard deviations in the summer. Could have a month of 1-2" of rain or a 6-7" month. It's been a few seasons it seems, but I remember some May/June/July's where it just doesn't stop raining.
  9. Looks like ORH averages around 1” per week all summer if you look at it that way... but saying 1-2” a week is dire seems like 4-8” is what summer months should have. Most stations appear to be 3.50-4.25” type monthly averages. Anyway, hope you get the rain for your lawn. I definitely don’t hate plenty of dry weather to spend outside.
  10. That sounds pretty good... lack of rainy days keeping people inside. It’s the time of year with like only 7 hours of true darkness, can be outdoors as much as possible without rain. Its crazy how light it is out at 8pm right now. Could start a run, walk or bike ride now. The Rec Path is still bustling with activity out the window, ha.
  11. iPhone 11 has been pretty good. It has whatever their default auto-edit post process on it. Does make it pop a bit. Either way the camera on these phones is crazy when I’ve also got a couple grand of equipment in my backpack that stays there more and more these days.
  12. Can’t top it. Chamber of Commerce weather is back. Wet from the rain today but very dry airmass now and the air is crystal clear after yesterday’s haze.
  13. It was legit for sure. Went from mid-summer to hoodie weather in like a couple hours. Bouncing around upper 50s to 60F at MVL all afternoon. Dews into the 40s.
  14. 12z Euro has a pretty good heater on Wednesday. GFS and GGEM are hot but look 3-5F cooler... more like mid-upper 80s instead of 90s.
  15. Only had 0.15” here so stupidly decided to try and go for a hike, but the mountain is getting raked by upslope rain. About two miles out you run into some steady rain and then by the time you get there it’s wiper blades on high. Walked about 5-10 minutes, was thoroughly soaked, turned around and came home, ha. Station up there is showing a steady tenth an hour and up to a half inch of water at 1500ft.
  16. Yeah it happened fast. The breeze coming through the inside here was slamming interior doors shut. That NW breeze cleared it out real fast. Got the interior down to mid-60s and shut it all up.
  17. Well that’s quite the change. Car saying 58-59 in town now. Might be a tad cool as stations are mostly hanging at 60F now. Down to 55F at 1500ft base of ski area. 55-60F and gusty NW winds is a far cry from the past few days. Windows and doors slamming shut.
  18. Rain and in the low-60s... been enjoying the sound of rain the past 2-3 hours, even if it’s only been 0.05”/hr stuff.
  19. Nice. SNE the max today and tomorrow, NNE had it the previous two days. Spreading the wealth of summer.
  20. Hiked up to the fabled Mansfield stake to see the end of the natural snowpack in Vermont. The upper Toll Road forests are very widely patchy snow cover. I do believe aside from any random holes in the ground or whatever, that the northeast facing The site has been down to a trace since mid-week when the snow became fractured around the stake. Now it's down to a few small patches around the site. It is hard to explain just how big the 12-foot stake is when you are standing on the ground. Just a couple years ago in spring of 2019 that thing got over 10 feet of solid depth. The dog gives the height of the stake some context. Of course the dog visited every patch, making sure to cool off every time.
  21. Too much cloud cover today for more than 82F. Had a few very light rain showers around midday, don’t even think it was measurable rain to be honest. All it did was add low level humidity it seemed. Oddly today at 80-82F with dews near 60F felt just as summery or more so than near 90F with dews in the 40s.
  22. Beating the White Sox too... the AL East is a hot division right now. Lots of winning going on. Rays and Jays tied in the 9th right now.
  23. Good night for New England sports. Boston getting it done in NHL and MLB.
  24. Kind of bummed, MVL and MPV only hit 89F officially. It deserved 90F... the 5-minute data showed 90F but the rounding in the temperature conversion from C to F causes some false obs? I know Dendy has explained it so many times. Anyway, looks like the official 00z highs are: LEB... 92F BML... 91F BTV... 90F IZG... 89F MVL... 89F MPV... 89F FIT... 88F MHT... 88F RUT... 87F HIE... 87F CON... 87F DDH... 86F BDL... 84F ORH... 82F BOS... 82F HFD... 81F IJD... 81F LEW... 77F PWM... 69F
  25. Ha, your original point stands for sure. Gourmet is not how it should be described. But I love the basic diet of like fish, dairy, potatoes/carrots and really good bread. Definitely a sustainable hearty food culture that developed from all the Scandinavian villages where it’s really hard to get from place to place... so you eat what you have because no one is bringing you anything else when isolated by mountains, glaciers, and water. My cousins over there are built like brick shithouses. Own a masonry business moving rock all day and then live off fish, potatoes and cheese.
