September Discussion Thread: Bring the frost; kill the bugs.

Yeah the dews seem different… cloudy, low ceiling, inverted somewhere up there, breezy. Feels like autumn dews ahead of a FROPA. -

Muggies getting ripped up here on south flow. Low clouds and moisture increasing. Dews were upper 40s at 5am and now near 60F. -

Pizza Chef in Southbridge on the corner of Elm and Main St. That was my childhood summer pizza. Grinders too. -

I love the ancestral look to eating. How evolution and prosperity has changed human food habits from the hunter/gathering societies. 56/49 at MVL. This is above normal, it has been, but it's still noticeably chillier than what we saw this summer. Any dews below 50 seem like another season. Something is happening in the seasonal change, just not shockingly in any way. -

Mods can move this to the banter thread for sure, but props to you man for being religious about it in respect for your father. I'm with you, I'm all or nothing. I need that strict mentality. Like you running every morning, the warm season I find time every day to hike with the dog. Sometimes it's obsessive to my wife, ha. I find it necessary mentally and physically. Speaking of lactose intolerant, I know that well. I was in like 3rd or 4th grade and was getting real nauseous, puking and/or having the shits. Probably the only time in my life I felt a true unknown reason for feeling shitty to be honest. Teachers and my parents started thinking I was just avoiding school because of the randomness of feeling sick. Turned out I was lactose intolerant after some tests. Cheese pizza day was a bad time, peanut butter and jelly was a good time. Milk with cereal in the morning led to a bad day, while bagel with peanut butter was fine. I grew out of it in my teens and early 20s though, slowly adding dairy back later in life, body was fine with it. The cool thing about it is every body chemistry is different. Big props though for your dedication to body health. -

You don’t do dairy? That would be the toughest for me. I live on meat protein (mostly chicken, turkey, salmon, tuna, but sometimes red meat), eggs and dairy. Beer is the carbs. I’m a big cheese fan, that would be real tough to give up. I’m not talking about your supermarket cheese but like specialty stuff (like a good brew instead of Bud Light). A block of good cheese and a knife after a day of skiing…sitting down to look at some winter storm models? That’s my jam, haha. Channeling my inner Norwegian heritage of broad shouldered big guys living on dairy, fish and meat. -
Eating the dick of an oxen in a NYC restaurant as a kid is still probably the weirdest thing I’ve ever eaten. I think we had Pigeon then too. Some restaurant our family went to when I was like 12, and they kept bringing out weirder and weirder stuff to try. Looking back, not sure I would’ve jumped at it now. I remember it just tasted like sausage.

What a shot! Don’t believe I’ve ever hiked that despite being in the neighborhood. Great shot of Camels Hump. I think JSpin’s place is down there somewhere.

I’m going on a month long dry spell here, it’s all catching up to me now in my mid-30s. Drinking a couple double IPAs (many walkable restaurants/bars) with frequency will catch up to you. I’m not in my 20s in a ski town anymore. Mid-30s is a different ball game. 54/52 to make it weather relevant, this weather has been awesome. -

Good to hear! Was starting to worry when you made it sound like life is no fun and depressing without heat and dews a few weeks ago . -

The US is a country where at 18 years old you are expected to fly away and go on your own. I feel like in the town I grew up in that being a “townie” was labeled as a bad thing. Over in Europe people live 3 generations together very frequently. No expectation to move out on their own or whatever. More of a group effort for survival vs individualistic. We also joke about living in Mom’s basement, there are very strong stereotypes here about living with your parents and stuff like that. It’s normal in many European countries and cultures though. -
Yeah another 10 days from now with a 10-day window…. OCT 1-10 seems like a great time to wander NNE for foliage. The normal time frame. Usually when the Columbus Day weekend crowds come it’s too late by that mid-October weekend… or it’s leaf drop mixed with 100% orange. That post-peak orange that hangs around.

Did @alex frost? In the NNE thread @Patriot21might have frosted in VT. Some chilly readings. Averill Coop showed 32F, lowest around up on the Canadian/NH border. -

41F at the local PWS this AM… most seemed to be 40-43F around here. Fogged out and fairly uniform this morning. -
Yeah here's a quick Paint map, ha. I have no idea why the Smuggs trails aren't on Google (they probably like it that way ) but Smuggs is on the backside there of the Spruce Peak trails at Stowe. Photo taken from the top of the Sensation Quad and it's the one time of year the sun angle from the west lines up perfectly to cast Mansfield's shadow into the black circle on that face. That's the Sterling Ridge that runs down east of Stowe ski resort and Sterling Valley drainage is on the other side.

It’s changing quicker as the days go by, some years are earlier than others but October is the peak time usually. Later September to me is when you like color foliage mixed with green. Once into October it’s “firing” on all cylinders (lame joke).

It only happens around the equinoxes, but twice a year the sun angle lines up to cast Mount Mansfield's shadow on the Sterling ridge. The Chin and the Adams Apple profiles are the most prominent.

68/48 over this way. Nice to have the NNE band back together again. I’m at the top of the Gondola right now looking over at MWN on the horizon. Crystal clear visibility. -

Good to see 70F over 50F dews at BOS. Some of the greatest weather you can dream up. 64/49 up this way, hopefully we can get to 70F. -
Pretty cool we are getting towards that time of the year… warm lake waters and cold air above them: NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/... As of 710 AM EDT Sunday...Only minor changes to the forecast based on latest observations. Increased cloud cover locally over Burlington and south into Addison County as a lake band has developed downstream of Lake Champlain this morning. Based on NAM3 sounding profiles, temperatures aloft at ~1500ft are around 10C and latest lake ob shows water temps of 68F. This give a delta around 18 degree supporting the development of this cloud. As daytime heating commences the temperature difference should lessen therefore expect this cloud to dissipate within a couple hours.

Crisp morning, love this time of year. Woke up chilly inside from leaving windows open. Fantastic sleeping weather. 43’s around town. -
I'm trying not to be a homer, and I have no real direct observations between the two. My first season pass was to Whiteface/Gore back in high school, moved to the VT side during college and never went back for skiing. It feels snowier in VT, though the 'Dacks are cold and hold snowpack very well. The weird posit is that there is a sweet spot elevation zone in NNE mountains that the true high peaks may be too exposed to capitalize? The Adirondacks and Whites have far more above treeline terrain than the minor amount in the Greens on Mansfield. More wind, turbulence that causing less than ideal crystals too? Higher snowfall in the areas surrounding the big terrain, definitely less mixed. I do think the Northern Greens are better in NW flow upslope (those conditions exist mostly during strong NE tracking storms) and are further east for coastal synoptic events. That's why this area over through Alex and Phin's area is so snowy. The best overlap of orographic snows and synoptic snows. Some years feature differing amounts of SE vs NW flow events, more mesoscale precip versus larger scale synoptic SE-E flow off the ocean. The overlapping zones do the best statistically over the course of the winter season.

Dew at MVL peaked at 68F up here around noontime... now down to 54F with a temp of 60F. Love how fast it changes this time of year. Right ahead of the cold front you get some dew pooling and then it passes and all the sudden its back to dry. Not quite full authentic dry air but getting there.

What a day at Misquamicut there! Man I miss that beach, childhood favorite on our few trips down per summer from Woodstock. Looks empty and awesome. Love how you can see the rollers way out into the ocean on that shot.
