  1. Good lord. -25F here. MVL ASOS -26/-31 on last 5-minute update.
  2. It does for sure when these arctic air masses sink to the lowest levels under high pressure. The cold comes out of the flats of Canada to the NW of the region... just seeps into the nooks and crannies after an initial push over the rocks. It likes to be low level as a default.
  3. -15F with a dew of -20F at the ASOS. It is absolutely frigid outside... tree and deck popping cold. These temperatures hit a different way. 0F is one thing, the -15F to -20F and colder stuff is fairly brutal. Especially at 9:30pm letting the dog out for the last time this evening. She went out, did the business, and came inside even as starting to lift paws due to cold. It's the type of cold you die in if you ended up stranded outside in.

  5. Seems like the real cold nights on the whole have been becoming less likely, but maybe it's just a brief interlude of a better mixed atmosphere over the years... but of course some solid arctic air masses will make their way into NNE. With normal conditions and an arctic air mass, we'll get these occasional 2-4 year cold mins. Be interesting when we see the next 10 year cold temps.
  6. I love that stuff too, ha. The sharp gradients are awe-inspiring no matter where you are.
  7. Frigid. 313 PM EST Fri Jan 21 2022 ...Bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for the North Country tonight... Another round of cold temperatures are expected tonight with low temperatures generally dipping to between 10 and 30 below zero. Although winds will be light to calm, protect against hypothermia and expect to need multiple layers of clothing if heading outdoors. Running or even a brisk walk in these conditions could result in frost bite on exposed skin.
  8. .NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/... As of 618 AM EST Friday...And just like that, multiple records have been broken this morning. The air mass is much colder and drier than any model had (sans the 10th percentile NBM) so we have been playing catchup a little bit this morning. The biggest surprising is Ellenburg in Clinton County in NY where they have maintained a 5-8 mph wind with temperatures falling to 25 below. Wind chills in this one location have fallen to 44 below zero. Given the localized nature, we have decided to keep the wind advisory out with no upgrade to a warning. Overall, these are the coldest ambient temperatures for many locations dating back to January of 2018 when a similar arctic outbreak occurred across the North Country. Here is a list of broken/tied temperature records as of 6 AM. Location New Record Old Record ----------------------------------------------------- Saranac Lake -30 -27 (2005) Massena -29 -27 (2005) Plattsburgh -19 -16 (1984)
  9. Maybe, but it’s been cold. BTV doesn’t see fake cold and they are progged to see sun-zero temps like 2003-2004 this month when all is said and done. The next 10 days look cold. January of yore?
  10. Still dropping in town. The station at the bottom of the golf course closest to home has hit -20F now for first time this season.
  11. Car says -17F on start up along the River. Slow to turn over this morning.
  12. The first couple seasons Eyewall was up here were poor... but then he got himself some big systems and a 30"+ event in BTV. Upslope land more. Hopefully Phin follows the same path.
  13. It's true, but 10 of 19 days at MVL have seen temperatures below 2F. It'll be 7 of the last 9 days at MPV with temperatures witnessed below 0F. Some high diurnal ranges but the mins have been cold.
  14. That blue sky hits differently when an arctic air mass is moving in. Temps were below zero at the summit and single digits down low when the photo was taken. Cold. Snowpack below normal but the vibe is winter.
  15. What a show, got addicted to that series a while back during COVID stay at home. Looking forward to it. Thanks for the reminder.
  16. Winter's not going to end. We'll ski regardless like every other year into the spring. If it's going to get mild, it's still awesome. Arctic cold huddled inside, or t-shirt weather outside, it's all awesome in the mountains. Daylight increasing every day. NNE vibe is take it in stride.
  17. That'd be some spring skiing. If given lemons, make lemonade? It's no competition, whatever happens can be enjoyed. It'll probably snow hard this spring.
  18. It’s been a sneaky component of this winter up here… lots of Wind Chill Advisories/Warnings products issued the past several weeks. It’s become a regular occurrence all the sudden.
  19. It doesn't take much to look seasons-in-seasons. That's a solid winter look there. May not be deep winter but it's winter. Snow stuck up the tree trunks, good stuff.
  20. 0/-10 with a wind chill of -15F currently in the valley/village at 6:30pm. Tonight is going to be brutal. Heating bill the last month wasn't pleasant. We've had some legit cold.
  21. Yeah it’s all there. Glad you are back up north, must feel relieving.
  22. Ha yeah it’s dropping fast this morning. Was around 18F when I got here at 5am and chatted with the groomers, and now it’s 10F. Looks like a cold week coming up.
