  2. January 2016...it melted so fast it's hard to remember...
  3. 1964 set a record low mid month of 48 degrees...broke the record of 49 in 1961...1967 set a new record for that date with a 47 degree morning...record lows in the 1960's were numerous...
  4. if a weak el nino develops the farmers almanac will be right...if a strong el nino develops the old farmers almanac will be right...if a neutral winter develops they both will be wrong...the current streak of winters with at least 30" of snow and a 9" snowfall is five...six with a 9 inch or more...does the streak continue of break?...in August I'm always on the cold and snowy train until reality hits...the reality could be another above normal snow season with normal temperatures...
  5. today was the 14th day in a row with a min 70 or higher to start August...the record is 18 set in 1988...NYC has 38 days with a min 70 or higher so far...since 1930 NYC is averaging almost 33 days with a min 70 or higher and a consecutive streak of almost 9....the 1950's and 60's had the lowest amounts...that was probably due to some dry summers...1962 had only 8 such days...2005 had 60///records are 61 in 1906...8 in 1962... year total min 70+ consecutive 70+ 1930..........26............8 1931..........34............7 1932..........25............6 1933..........33............6 1934..........26............4 1935..........29..........11 1936..........20............4 1937..........28............6 1938..........34..........12 1939..........44..........13.......29.9.........7.7 1940..........24............8 1941..........27............6 1942..........20............4 1943..........30............4 1944..........41..........14 1945..........29............4 1946..........11............3 1947..........30............5 1948..........29............6 1949..........43..........10......32.4........6.4 1950..........13............5 1951..........23............7 1952..........38..........12 1953..........34..........10 1954..........18............5 1955..........45..........13 1956..........20............5 1957..........31............5 1958..........26............4 1959..........46..........10......29.4.......7.3 1960..........20............5 1961..........42............9 1962............8............2 1963..........14............5 1964..........19............4 1965..........17............4 1966..........40..........11 1967..........17............5 1968..........29............6 1969..........33............6......23.9.......5.7 1970..........37..........10 1971..........45............9 1972..........30..........15 1973..........37..........11 1974..........26............3 1975..........23..........12 1976..........24............4 1977..........37............9 1978..........31..........13 1979..........42..........17......33.2......10.3 1980..........52..........22 1981..........39............8 1982..........30..........12 1983..........45..........13 1984..........40..........16 1985..........34............6 1986..........31............4 1987..........32............7 1988..........42..........21 1989..........28............5......37.3.....11.4 1990..........32............8 1991..........31............7 1992..........14............4 1993..........35..........10 1994..........35............9 1995..........39..........18 1996..........22............5 1997..........27............8 1998..........39..........11 1999..........45..........13......31.9.......9.3 2000..........22............4 2001..........30............9 2002..........43............9 2003..........33..........15 2004..........28............6 2005..........60..........14 2006..........41..........15 2007..........35............8 2008..........35............8 2009..........18............5.....34.5.......9.3 2010..........54..........22 2011..........40............9 2012..........47..........10 2013..........51..........19 2015..........33............9 2016..........51..........16 2017..........44............7.....45.7.....13.1 2018..........38..........13 as of 8/13..... 1876..........46..........14 1906..........61..........17 1908..........54..........16
  6. I actually have a rain gauge imby...I need to build a shelter for my thermometers...I'm in se Eltonville near Woods of Arden...
  7. 0.29" with this evenings storm...0.60" from yesterdays bomb...
  8. 1977-78 was a wet season starting with November's 7" deluge...there were six major storms that gave NYC over an inch of precipitation (five with snow) all within a months time...that winter was disappointing until January 19th-20th...we did get 37" in 30 days...the winters from 1970-71 to 1975-76 were not very good...there was 1972-73 with virtually no snow...1974-75 had one good week...70-71 was very cold with little snow...as bad as it gets...
  9. not many big snows for people growing up in the seventies...June 1972 had a cool spell with mins in the mid 40's...unheard these days...Aug 76 tied the lowest temp for any August...again unheard of in todays world...
  10. I'd like to see a cold and snowy second half of December with at least a 6" snowfall before Christmas and on the ground Christmas morning...there have not been many Decembers like that lately or over the last 100 years......these Decembers fit this criteria... 1959... 1961... 1963... 1966... 1995... 2009... .................................... 1960...big snow to soon...I'll take though... 2000...big snow to late...ditto... 2010...big snow just late...ditto...
  11. we have not had a la nina winter followed by a weak positive one since 1950...we had years that were weak negatives that followed la nina or another la nina...the weekly oni went down to +0.1...flounding at best...A late Bloomer?... winter.........DJF oni... 1956-57..........-0.2 and rising ... 1985-86..........-0.5...rising slowly... 2001-02..........-0.1...rising slowly... 2012-13..........-0.4 and steady...
  12. mine were worn out from usage and poor storage...the small March 28th 1959 snow and sleet event on my tenth Birthday stands out in my mind as an early storm that helped me be a weather nut...
  13. 21" in southern Brooklyn on 2/3-4/1961...28" snow depth after the storm...If it wasn't for the change to sleet in the am hours of the 4th it would have been a 30" storm... https://www1.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/orders/IPS/IPS-F4A8D942-C856-46FD-A00A-C49D1F98E5BE.pdf https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/IPS/coop/coop.html?_page=2&state=NY&foreign=false&stationID=305796&_target3=Next+>
  14. mine was probably the March 1956 double snowstorms...the 57-58 winter cemented me as a snow freak...The February 58 blizzard is the first storm I observed and the first time I remember seeing dim Sun from the increasing clouds before the storm... I remember the howling winds from the 54 Hurricane season...The first Tex Antoine almanac I got in 1962 made me the weather history buff I am today...
  15. July ended up averaging 77.6f in NYC...the average since 1980 is 77.3...pretty close to the average...
  16. meh...Long Island gets the precipitation when it matters...during the winter and its snow...
  17. I was thinking 2013-14 when I said double the amount than the previous winter...2014-15 still had twice the normal amounts...
  18. using the oni scale there were four neutral years but were neutral negative for DJF oni number...no neutral positives... 1956-57... 1986-87... 2001-02... 2012-13... 2013-14...second consecutive year...
  19. we are coming off two years of la nina winters..these are the other el nino years following at least two la nina winters or weak negatives...as long as the el nino stays weak to moderate the chances for more snow than last winter goes up...except for the super el nino years of 72-73 and 97-98 NYC got at least 50% more snowfall than the previous winters... season peak oni...DJF oni...NYC snowfall... 1951-52......1.2......0.5...almost double the amount of snowfall over the previous winter... 1957-58......1.8......1.8...almost double the amount of snowfall over the previous winter... 1963-64......1.4......1.1...three times the amount of snow over the previous season... 1968-69......1.1......1.1...50% more snow than the previous season... 1972-73......2.1......1.8...very strong el nino...I doubt this year gets that strong...very little snow fell... 1976-77......0.9......0.7...50% more snow than the previous winter... 1986-87......1.2......1.2...almost double the amount of snow over the previous season... 1997-98......2.4......2.2...very strong el nino...I doubt it gets that strong...very little snow fell... 2002-03......1.3......0.9...10-15 times more snowfall than the previous season... 2009-10......1.6......1.5...double the amount of snow than the previous season... 2014-15......0.7......0.6...double the amount of snow than the previous season...
  20. NYC has six days this month 90 or higher...The average number of 90 days since 1942 is seven..2000-09 averaged 3.6...90-99 averaged 8.8...the 2010's is 8.8 so far...
