  3. 1913 was an el nino year and was one of the wettest years on record...the winter did not get going until Feb. 8th...the 1913-14 winter... the first hint of winter came on November 11th with a few snow flurries and below freezing temps...December was on the warm side with a dusting of snow on the 10th...there was a rainy Christmas Holiday...mild and wet before and after the 25th...January 4th had a noreaster with gale winds nd mixed precipitation...coastal damage from the storm...the first cold wave came on January 13th...it got as low as -5 the morning of the 14th...gale winds ushered in the cold...thawing after the cold shot with a dusting of snow...no more snow after that...brief cold shots came between mild and wet days...the benign pattern continued until Feb 7th...after a long series of rain storms it got a lot colder Feb. 8th with a little light snow on Feb 10th...after the light snow another severe cold wave hit...the temperature registered -3 on Feb. 12th...the morning of the 13th was -1...snow and sleet developed late in the day...temperature was 26 by midnight...the snow and sleet got heavy on the 14th...snow and sleet accumulated almost 10"...the temperature maxed out at 34 before dropping back below freezing...8" was on the ground on the 15th...temperature dropped to 12...more snow on the 16th...another 5"...that brought the snow depth to 13"...max temperatures were below freezing the next ten of eleven days...light snow on the 19th...snow depth was 8"...light snow on the 23rd...7" snow depth...the third cold wave of the season came after that...temperatures were as low as one degree on the 25th...the next three days had some thawing with temperatures topping out in the 40's...March 1st 2014 was 38 degrees when the day started just after midnight...rain developed early am hours and became heavy...sleet mixed in as temperatures dropped below freezing...heavy sleet and snow fell all day and into the night when it let up to lighter snow and sleet...the storm ended the next day and when all was said and done the temperature dropped to 17 and there was 13" of snow on the ground again...gale winds accompanied the storm and NYC set a record for the lowest pressure ever recorded...it stayed wintry until March 26th when the first 65 degree day came...March 6th had another 3" of snow...snow depth was 6"...mild mid month but colder and snowier from the 18th-24th...3.5" of snow fell on March 22nd...last measurable snowfall of the season...that brought the season total just over 40"...1913-14 was a slow starting winter that got   4. todays ao forecast looks good...it will be negative for the 13th storm...it rises to neutral but all members go quite negative at the end of the run...this is what I was waiting for...hopefully the forecast doesn't change tomorrow...it looks like a minus 3-4sd coming up...
  5. 1913-14 had a few major storms with gale winds and coastal damage...Feb. 13th-14th was the first big snowstorm of the year...1.88" of precip...9.7" of snow and sleet...5 more inches from another storm on the 16th brought the snow depth 12"...
  6. I cant pull up the local data for that day due to the shutdown...But I remember seeing 0.30 and 0.40 per hour falling as sleet and snow mid day on the 1st...it was the super storm but the storm passed to our east instead of just west of the area...

I'm reading about the1913-14 winter...it was an el nino year...it got a very late start...from mid Feb to mid March NYC got almost 40" of snow including two major storms. ..1913 was a wetyear...similar 2018...I'm putting together a recap of that winter with old newspaper stories...I should be finished by next week...

  13. in 1994 and 1996 on this date winter was here in full force...1994 was heading into an ice storm and 1996 a blizzard to remember...
  14. none of the winters that followed those years had a major snowstorm...only two had near average snowfall...
  15. I managed to get 3" from the 2/6/10 storm in Bulls Head Staten Island...
  16. meh...it snowed about 9" and then rained for 12 hours...Not one of my favorite storms...it did end as a few inches of snow...photo from the morning after the storm...

  18. 2006-07 averaged 36.5 for met winter...30 straight days averaged 25.8 from late Jan to late Feb...that means the other 60 days averaged 41.8...two sleet storms yielded almost 8" of snow and sleet...if those storms were snow NYC would have seen 25"... edit...1984-85 averaged 36.4 for met winter...there were 30 consecutive days that averaged 27.5...the other 60 days averaged around 40.8...in contrast 2007-08 averaged 36.4 but the coldest 30 day period averaged only 35.7...that means the other 60 days averaged slightly 36...

  21. what a difference a year makes...last year we were in the grip of an arctic outbreak and a storm was on the horizon...this year is the opposite...the temps are close to record highs today...1966, 1919, 1973 were all el nino years...2005 too...4 of the five warmest New Years day came during an el nino...two more el nino years show up in the record high minimums...the last time the city had a very cold New Years day and the next year was warm was 100 years ago...
