  1. October 1962, 1972 and 1979 had a slushy accumulation on grassy surfaces in parts of the city...in 2002 I got two nights in a row of sleet that accumulated enough to measure...
  2. it has a lot to do with the night time lows getting warmer faster than the day time highs...both are getting warmer...the 2010's could have the warmest minimums on average for each month...some average monthly maximums came in the 1930's, 40's and 50's...October's highest average max came in the 1940's along with decade average...the 2010's can beat the October monthly average with another torch month...
  3. I just started watching football in 1962...YA was the man for two years...the Giants had a great team but were out coached in the playoffs...1962 was the first year I did weather obs...it was the first year the four seasons meant something other than the weather...
  4. the Maine blizzard at the ned of December 62 missed NYC with the snow but not the wind and cold... http://archives.chicagotribune.com/1962/12/31/page/1/article/high-winds-record-snow-zero-cold-batter-east
  5. 1938 saw a 90 degree day in mid October...there was 10" of snow on the ground at the end of the upcoming November...same for 1939 and the upcoming winter was very cold...

  7. my favorite weather year was from 3/3/1960 to 2/4/1961...four blizzards and a super hurricane...that's hard to beat...
  8. the driest decade was from 1956-1965...During that period NYC got five good winters and eight storms 10" or more...
  9. the drought broke in Sept. 1966...1953 had 20 days 90 or better before mid August and 12 in the streak...1963 just missed being the driest year on record...1964 did become the driest on record...1965 broke that record by a lot...1966 started off like 63-65 but a big turn in the pattern came in September 66...
  10. there have been many years with few 90+ days in NYC before mid August...many of them had most of their 90+ days after that...1960 had one before it got four at the end of August and early Sept...1973 had ten before eight straight at the end of Aug into early Sept...1970 had 22 90+ days...seven came in September...2015 had six in September...after the coolest start to August on record 1964 had six or seven more days 90 or better in late August and September...
  11. 1966 had three heat waves that peaked over 100 in Newark including three straight the beginning of July...2010 had twice as many 90+ days as 1966 but only one heat wave that peaked at or over 100...It probably was the hottest ever with four straight 100 degree days in early July...1966 had five total 100 degree days and 2010 four...
  12. recent years had some very hot days in September...you can't rule out that happening again...
  13. I like both Nick and Joe's forecast...Larry's fine lol...
  14. the best 4th of July weather of my life was in 1965...Sunny with a max of 90 and a min of 65 with very little humidity... http://www.weather.gov/media/okx/Climate/CentralPark/4thofJulywx.pdf

  16. yes that's it...The Poconos got 2" on top of what ever was left on the ground from April 6th...I think the 4/6 storm was a Miller B storm which usually misses DC on average...
  17. the winter of 1981-82 was great north and west of NYC...snowstorms on consecutive days in the Poconos mid December...The Poconos had continuous snow cover from mid December to mid March..Then 13" of snow on April 6th...April 7th stayed below freezing all day in NYC...another inch at Newark a few days later...-7 two days in a row at Newark airport in January...it was an underrated year because February and March had very little snow...
  18. FEB/Mar. 2007 had two sleet storms up here....Feb. 1970 had an ice storm up here... Snow in December is possible even during a mild fall and winter...
  19. I don't live here but I would vote for snowmageddon 2 because how rare is a major storm falling on top of more than a foot of snow...My favorite for NYC is Feb 1961 because of big snow falling on deep snow cover...as a kid 28" of snow on the ground was like living in heaven..
  20. Central Park hit 90 today...
  21. nice stats...What is DCA's hottest seven day periods of all time?...
  22. six for LGA is significantly low...same goes for JFK...
  23. 1941, 1939, 1938, 1927 were the only years with 90 in October...

  25. 1962 had 90 degrees the end of April and 99 degrees in May...It got cool the second half of July and it stayed cooler than average until the next Spring...The hot days had lower minimums...
