1/24-1/25 Major Winter Storm - S. IL, IN, and OH
RobertSul replied to A-L-E-K's topic in Lakes/Ohio Valley
Thanks for the welcome back! Yeah, my dad worked in Boston, and he’d often comment how it’d be raining in downtown when he left work, only to come home to a winter wonderland. The Worcester area has very similar temperatures to southeast Michigan in mid-winter, but admittedly we didn’t get the frequency of snow falling throughout the winter months. -

I moved to southeast Michigan a number of years ago from central Mass, where we’d often get more snow than Boston because of less coastal taint and some amount of orographic lift. It’s been tough seeing some of their best winters since I’ve moved here, and I still stupidly believe the long range models that show 12”+ around here because that was always a reality out there. If it make you feel any better, tracking these monster storms is fun, but the reality of digging out isn’t. I had to dig a path in the backyard for the family dog growing up when an April 1st storm dropped nearly 3 feet of cement snow practically overnight, and our German Shepherd couldn’t plow through the snow to pee, and the snow was too dense for the snowblower to chew through. Spent a good 4 hours or so shoveling that day. -

If we end up getting into the thick of things, that’s going to be a cold snowstorm for us in lower Michigan. Temps in the lower teens. -

Saw green flashes in Canton around 10:20pm. Not sure if something touched down nearby, but the winds got intense for a minute there. -
One of the few EF5 tornadoes that have struck Michigan happened on April 3rd, 1956 in Hudsonville.

Oceans absorb excess carbon dioxide, which disrupts the chemical equilibrium and leads to acidification. The Permian-Triassic extinction event of 250 million years ago, in which 90% of all life on land and in the sea perished, was a result of ocean acidification. There’s already a higher concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than the Earth has seen in 4 million years, and it’s shot up drastically in the past 50 years and it’s still increasing. Case closed. That’s all I’m going to say on the matter. -

Ah, I see your understanding of how metaphors work is just as comprehensive as your understanding of science. -

Yes, adding billions of tons of man-made gasses into the atmosphere per year and gradually changing the composition and viscosity of where our weather forms has no impact. The sun is the only thing that matters! You can safely add a couple teaspoons of bleach to the glass of water you drink and it’ll be fine, because all that water originates from the faucet that you’ve been safely and reliably drinking from for years. And thank God we have the plucky band of oil tycoons funding Fox News hosts to expose the malicious claims made by thousands of worldwide climatologists. I mean, clearly these climatologists got into the field not for their passion, but for the 5-digit incomes that leads them to a life of extravagant middle class luxury. Oil tycoons on the other hand lead a very modest and simple life off of the millions and billions they make, so it’s not like they’ve got a vast amount of wealth to potentially lose. And it’s just sheer coincidence that 3 times as many record high temperatures are broken per year than record cold temperatures, or that 10% of all weather stations, the vast majority of which are over 100 years old, in the U.S. had their all-time record temperatures broken in 2021. Nope. Definitely a socialist conspiracy. -

Good. Monday’s snow melted way too fast because of the sun angle. -
Damn, that’s impressive! How does that amount of liquid compare with previous years?

Remind me to introduce you to my friend Reality sometime.

We've been getting 100-year floods more frequently and winter storms have also gone up in precipitable values. Statistically speaking, probably no longer once-a-125-year event.

The GFS performed terribly with the Boston blizzard. Too far SE and too dry.
-
Yeah it seems a lot of places will probably start off as rain/mixed. Like my grandmother used to say, sometimes you have to sniff the taint to get the goods.
-
I seem to recall that the RAP did the best with the Boston blizzard a couple days ago out of all the short term models, while other models were trending drier.

I just experienced 2 feet of snow in Boston with this blizzard, guess I’m going back to Michigan with the possibility of another 2 feet.

I’m staying in a hotel at the Boston seaport, and it’s been near whiteout conditions for a couple hours at this point. Crazy stuff. -

That’s as good as an admission as any that you are, because I didn’t specify just who SnowBoy was. -

I agree. Dude’s been weenie-ing everyone’s posts. Reminds me of a certain SnowBoy user from a year ago.
