The return of the elusive Nor'easter. Drought buster or bust?
somecallmetim replied to dailylurker's topic in Mid Atlantic
And here was the WPC 7-day map on Monday afternoon. -
Today and tomorrow is actually a great/efficient time to water anything that needs a deeper soak, as you're not having to wet the first couple of inches.
-
Managed about .25 of drizzle/light rain in Del Ray Alexandria this am. A lot more useful than .25 in a thunderstorm.
-
Down in Alexandria first storm came from the south, now line incoming from the west. Don't see that often.
-
Closest pws to us in Del Ray was 1.38.
-
.3 here in Del Ray. Mostly missed to west then east, but some soaking heavy rain instead of deluge. Lots of distant thunder with a couple very close strikes.
-
With the massively shifting precip totals over the last few days, including everything from a near complete miss on the 3k NAM to a proper 4.8 inch NAMming and some big numbers showing for several Euro cycles mid-week, it's yet another reminder of the falsity of "this only happens in with east coast storms in winter" (which I know most of us know).
-
That doesn't surprise me--when the storm arrived here in Del Ray, it came in like the derecho. You could hear it coming down the hill, and it was the strongest, or at least amongst the strongest, gust fronts I've seen with a storm in my 9 years at this location.

January Medium/Long Range: Chasing more snow to close out the month
somecallmetim replied to mappy's topic in Mid Atlantic
If I squint I can see the logic. Even in a leap year February is barely a month, so obviously it shouldn't count. It's the Delaware of months. -

We don't know each other, but our tastes in beer do and get along fabulously. -
January Medium/Long Range: A snowy January ahead?
somecallmetim replied to mappy's topic in Mid Atlantic
I saw -28 twice in Vermont back in the early 90s. The second time, a storm cut west and it warmed up and rained the following day, which shows that cosmic injustice and heartbreak comes even to the North Country. -

If you'd be willing to take one for the team and cancel today so the 00Z runs bring it back, that would be huge. -

That would have been a decent screen name. -

It's almost as if global climate interactions and the ability to decipher chaos in the system at long leads are incredibly complex. -
6-inch depth in Del Ray. People with children get to take office closure time today, so I took a half hour to go for a walk with my inner child. Started mixing with sleet, so back now as I had to deal with the inner child's tantrum.

January: Medium/ Long Range: May the Force be with Us....

Perhaps it's just learning fast that is what models do and trying to outdo them at it? -
I always appreciate the admonition to only drink fluids. Drinking solids can be a real choking hazard.

Was in the narrow band that continually lucked out yesterday with repeating storms in Alexandria, measured ~2.5 inches in Del Ray from four rounds of downpours.

January 12-13th Cold Smoke Obs and Nowcast
somecallmetim replied to Bob Chill's topic in Mid Atlantic
If nobody ever responded (and/or he were 5 posted), he would lose interest. That said, Perhaps exceeding 4 inches will put him in a snow coma and we won’t hear from him the rest of the winter. -

Stipulating all NAMiness, but I’m sure happier having it at 1.25 and tossing than having it at .3 and tossing. -

I’m just beyond happy that this thread isn’t tracking temperatures in WVA, PA and NW MD hoping the cold gets here in time.
