  1. I can attest to the damage from the EF2 in the Carmel/Patterson area back in May 18. That day was super scary here and the sheer number of trees down is astounding. There are pretty much two straight lines that run about 10 miles where it's devastated. We were out in the car as it hit and there was stuff flying everywhere. I actually was afraid for our safety.
  2. What a nice day today turned out to be. It was generally in the high 60's here but I did see 70 on the dashboard on the south side of Danbury. A week of low humidity and slight breeze every day has really dried the surface out nicely. The ground is very soft but there's pretty much no mud which is a surprise considering how wet it was a week ago. Only the biggest parking lot snowbanks are still holding on other than a couple of large banks in driveways that are north facing and always in the shade but I think those will go bye bye in another day or three.
  3. Thin overcast but it's quite sunny now. Temp is up to 54*. Gonna go do some more yardwork.
  4. I cut a path through the downed trees so I can get to the back of my yard now. I realized when I got there that there's a thousand pound piece of broken tree from the abandoned house behind me hung up in the crown of one of ours. I'm hoping for no wind for the next few months It's one ugly a*s widowmaker that I hope doesn't come down on one of our dogs. I have sooo much yard work to do now that I'm healthy enough to get back at it but I have to work some too so the yard is going to be a huge mess for a while.
  5. I'm going to head north and west to get away from the ocean influence. I'm chasing springtime
  6. That's the penalty you pay for living on LI. Sorry Well, that and a few others
  7. Yeah but the cool has been pretty pleasant. Nice and clear, sunny and dry so it is great for being outside and doing stuff. A warm couple of days in a row would be a good thing though.
  8. Yup it gets like that in Tahoe too, I was amazed that it could even snow that much.
  9. It has been between 20-25 for the last few mornings here. It warms pretty quickly to a warm feeling mid 40's but I sure would like it to be more like 60
  10. Alright, time to warm it up out there and maybe knock that wind down a bit. I really need to get out there and keep working at solving my car repair problem but it's fkn cold and unpleasant and I'm a whiny old guy.
  11. I had nothing down here. Some friends in VT said it was very mild but noticeable so you might have had a chance.
  12. I had partly to mostly cloudy all day. When the sun was out it was awfully nice. I spent the day in the driveway struggling with a car repair that went way above my pay grade and has my car disabled in the driveway on jack stands. A buddy stopped by with his chainsaw and helped me cut out the trees that were only partway down in the my yard. Now it looks like a war zone but there's only one, that we can't get to, hanging precariously. Then I went back to the car and tried some more before it got too cold and dark because it's mostly cloudy now and getting dark too early, thought I'd have another hour. IOW I spent all day outside and it was a nice crisp spring day of yore.
  13. Yeah I just saw some pics of some north facing stuff around Chatham that still had 3-5" on it this afternoon.
  14. I have seen 2 so far. I bet today's warmth kicks it in. I'll check some of the places that were really bad last year and update later.
  15. I hadn't considered that but the theory does have potential. The bug season did start awfully strong with the winter warmth.
  16. Strangely enough even with all of the rain and persistent humidity the bugs last year were less numerous than many similar years although some insects were significantly more of a problem. We had spider crickets that we've only had a few of before and the black flies were terrible in some spots. I know that hemispherically the flying insect count was way down and around here, at least most of the places I was, the mosquito population was a fraction of the year before.
  17. There are some pretty high spots up on the Tolland plateau that do well with backside snows in storms like this one. Even I84 tops out over 1k feet and the hills around are quite a bit higher.
  18. I have some mildly tilted asphalt that's relatively well protected from the wind and some good rocks that work well as wheel chocks. I'm gonna go for it but maybe not today, it's just too cold for me and my old hands.
  19. Yeah that radar last night looked like it was running right down the 22 and 9 corridors for a while, hopefully the high terrain got something good out of it. I got a good coating on the ground even the street was covered earlier, it's windy and cold just like a good spring day is supposed to be... I really need it to warm up because I have a hardcore car repair to do so I can get back to work this week. Anyone have a warm garage I can borrow for 5 or 6 hours?
  20. Looks like winter is back for a day, it snowed overnight and coated the ground nicely. The wind is roaring through the trees, not super strong but enough to make a good noise, it's 30* and the ground is frozen which is nice because the dogs didn't come in all muddy this morning.
  21. Yeah no accumulation here, it started to on parked cars on the north side of buildings but melted off just as quickly when it stopped. It was nice to see and wasn't a hassle to drive in which was good. Looks like we're borderline for a northern lights show tomorrow night https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/news/g2-moderate-watch-effect-23-march-2019-utc-day I might have to take a ride up north of I90 if the clouds break. I know my wife and kids are eager to see them, I've seen them many times but they never cease to amaze.
  22. It wasn't super windy but it was roaring through the trees. I like it when it sounds powerful but there aren't branches raining down. That was such a great storm. I got 17" in just a few hours after a nice warm spring day leading up to it. That was one of those early springs and the trees had pretty much leafed out then THUMP. Unfortunately it brought down a ton of branches and lots of trees. It really was a mess but it melted in no time so the cleanup wasn't so unpleasant.
  23. 37* and snowing pretty hard in Danbury right now.
