2019/2020 Mountains and Foothills Fall/Winter Thread.

Well that didn’t last long, back to small flakes. About an inch in spots that stay shaded and half an inch in spots that don’t. Good base for tonight though if we get some good rates and flake size. Might hit that 2-3” forecast. -

Light snow here since I’ve been home, flake size is anemic but we have about a half inch accumulated so far. -

Around 1” at Topton, huge flakes coming through the gorge and basically accumulation stopped when I got to the NOC until I got to Bryson City and a trace to dusting there. Light snow with tiny dendrites from there all the way home with little accumulation until coming up the mountain to Balsam Gap. Light dusting here with lots of tiny flakes flying. Wife said it was instant accumulation when it started due to big flakes and coming down hard. Just need to get dendrite growth fired up and get better size. -

Starting to accumulate in Andrews, calling it a day and heading home. Gonna be interesting going over the gap in Topton I bet. -

I’ll cash out on that map with the 2-3” zone it paints me in but I’m not expecting it unless the orientation sets up perfectly. -

Impressed with the coverage from this event, some amount of snow on the ground along 74 from Balsam Gap to Marble, mostly in the dusting to half inch range. Wished I was fishing the Nantahala when I drove through the gorge, picture perfect winter day with water cleared up and not running quite as high. Trout will be biting! -

Oh yea. We get shadowed by Lynn Lowry badly since we are at the base. I’d love to be at the one house I wanted above 5000’ in the Mt Sterling area next to park. Bet they got hammered. I’ll take anything I get in flow snow due to how we are situated, we actually managed our largest snow this year in the one event where trajectory was better for us, 2.5”. -

Congrats Met, Joe and Buckethead. Light snow here, about 1/4” of Fresh accumulation but you can tell the first dusting melted and froze as well as the wind blew it around so maybe closer to 1/2” total from when it started last night to now if I had measured the correct way with a snowboard and by the interval. Wife had to drive to Asheville at 3:30 am and said it was snowing hard from here to there but nothing on the way back. Adding my penny to the piggy bank. 1.5” to go to hit double digits for our first full winter season here, I‘m gonna be confident and think we can do it by the end of April. -

Light to moderate snow, ground is turning white. Went from just drizzle to a dusting in a matter of 30 minutes if that. -

Coming back from Murphy you could see the Smokies socked in above Bryson City and where it had snowed up around 4000’ and above in the mountains north of Sylva. Damp here at the house with nothing falling when I pulled in, the mountain above the neighborhood from about 4000’ on up is Socked in here at the house. Mountain top across 74 was white. Maybe wake up to a dusting, that’s the standard here in most NWFS situations. -

Looked to have some flakes mixing in when I left the house at 6:30, but miserly light rain/drizzle. Light rain here between Murphy and Andrews. -

Back deck this morning from my wife, I’ll go with 2-2.5” for the total which seems to match up with the report I saw from the NWS. Puts me in the 7.5-8” range for season to date, maybe we can eek out an inch or two of the upcoming NWFS is robust enough to spill over onto my side of the Plott Balsams. Then bring on a good March event and let’s see where the chips fall. -

Wife says we have what looks to be a little over 2 inches on the deck, neighborhood road and driveway a little slushy. -

Howdy neighbor, looked at a house there at your elevation but am just down The mountain from you in Balsam Forest. We look to be in a good spot for a Haywood maximum. -

Took a advantage of the beautiful weather and fished Fontana for a few hours this afternoon, second February in a row where it’s way up for the time of year. Only 17’ below full pond. Low 50’s for water temps, never thought I’d be catching fish shallow in the back of a creek in mid-February up here like it’s pre-spawn. Such is this winter. -

Crazy thing this morning, there’s a stripe of snow/ice in a band that looks to be running in the 4000-5000’ elevation range on both sides of 74 from the gap to Hazelwood (plott balsams one one side, great balsams on the other). Starts just above Nothing below or above that band. -

In Sylva at the fly shop and you aren’t kidding about freezing fog. Soon as I dropped down a couple miles from home you could see it clinging at the tree tops and above.
