    Winter 2022-23

Lock it in, Twitter says 2009-2010 here we come.
  2. Quite a bit of rain here much of last night. Every time I woke up I could hear it coming down.
  3. This has rapidly turned into a shitty weather week.
  4. Still dumpin' outside here. Maybe it'll make a dent in the drought conditions plaguing the area.
  5. Wow I'm at a charity auction right now and yeah, that eastern rain is really screwing things up.

My observation of Siberian snow cover over the past ten years is that it really doesn't mean shit down here. Looking at that graph (hard to read as it is), snow cover isn't far behind where it was in October 2009. We all know how that turned out.
  7. We got drizzle/mist here with the east breeze. But yeah, relatively mild.

Lol I had C. Diff once and 48hrs after I left the ER I was climbing Mt. Shuksan. 2016 was sort of a let down in SoMD. We got about a foot of snow, which is great of course, but that was less than half of what we got in December 2009. That's the benchmark storm for SoMD. DC made out a lot better in '16. We actually got quite a bit more snow last winter for the storm in early January than we did in 2016. Difference of course being there was zero wind during the snow last year vs 2016. Ah well, were overdue for a serious noreaster, hopefully this year it happens.

Dude, unless I got ebola or something no sickness is gonna keep me from hiking around in a true blizzard. Also, I'll trade you your young joints and tendons for my 2016 blizzard experience lol. You'll get your chance, just gotta bide your time. Too bad you missed 09-10.
  10. SoMD can have 55F and sunny all winter long,..honey badger don't care.
  11. But will my petunias make it until January again? That's the real litmus test.
  12. Oh snap. I'm going up the the mountain the second week of November. Might have to pack some snowshoes. Change it to kuchera ratios and our tent will collapse under the weight of all that snow.
  13. Before we got our property we used to rent a cabin at Herrington Manor every fall about this time. Hiking trails are pretty flat and there is a small lake you might be able to canoe on if the boats are still around before they remove them for the winter. Only downside for me is that they're sort of boring walks in the woods without much biological interest. Swallow falls is a more interesting trail if your party is up for it. My parents are 72yo and they did it, theyre both in decent health but by no means athletic. Not sure how a 4yo would do...no experience with children! There is also a trail in that vicinity that used to have the largest red oak in Maryland before it died. A few years ago I found it and it was a rotting carcass but most of the trunk was still standing. I tried googling but wasn't having luck. I think the flyers at Herrington Manor said where it was. It was pretty big.
  14. Swallow falls is great and would be doable I think for that age range. It's a relatively short hike and if memory serves me correct some of it is paved (i think). There are some very large old hemlocks and rhododendron too. I was on meadow mtn this past Friday and color was basically at peak, not sure now with the freezing/snow they had this morning.
  15. First flakes of the season in Bittinger this morning! ETA there's even a little bit of frost on my deck here in Huntingtown!
  16. 42F right now out in Bittinger with a freeze warning tonight. We put up several cellular game cameras around our property and apparently a flying squirrel lives in one of the oak trees that is in front of our shed. Every night we get pics of him running up and down the tree trunk with an acorn in his mouth. He's really cute. I've never actually seen a flying squirrel IRL before this. I know we have them on our property down here in huntingtown because I've heard them at night, usually in the fall. But I've never actually seen one before.
  17. Man I love this time of year. Looks gorgeous, feels gorgeous, even smells gorgeous with the wet falling leaves.
  18. Somehow we still found a tick on Benson yesterday. I have no idea how since lows in the 30s and highs in the 40s. Bastards.
  19. Nice pic, we woke up and my little thermometer said 28F at 3k ft but I'm not sure how accurate it is. Water bottle had frozen solid so it was obv below freezing. Took a drive into Accident to go to Firefly Farms and it was gorgeous, leaves have to be close to peak and the sky was such a deep blue....basically same as your pic!
  20. Had a hard freeze up here last night. Very windy up on the mountain but a gorgeous day otherwise.
