I'm honestly not sure if I want the GFS in the "good" camp at this point. It's interesting to look at, but unless it's part of an overall consensus in hitting us, I'd rather it be south/east right now.

January 24-26: Miracle or Mirage JV/Banter Thread!

My neighborhood was plowed 3-4 times, but my cul-de-sac was last done at about 2:00 pm. Went out with the dog a little bit ago and my street was a solid pack of 1.5-2” of sleet. The secondary roads were supposedly worked over pretty good, but as of about 4:00 pm the one nearest me was still in pretty bad shape. -
I think if we score a decent event (6-10", if not more) at the back end of this cold spell and then we hit a couple more small/moderate events later on, then it will go down as one of the more memorable winters around here. Not 09-10, 02-03, 95-96 type winters, but definitely among ones we can recall pretty easily in the future.

I was so prepared for the potential of power going out with this storm. I ran the generator yesterday (after draining the carburetor and cleaning it out), gassed it up with plenty of extra gas at the ready, and had it all staged and ready to go. I had all batteries and wireless chargers charged up, plans in place for keeping as warm as possible for a few days, etc. In the grand scheme of things, I'm really glad I didn't need to put any of that plan into action, but it *is* a little bit of a bummer that I couldn't at least have seen some of that that hard prep work put to good use! -
Gotta say...that seems kind of low for the amount of liquid equivalent since folks around us started off with 5" or so of snow (depending on where you are).
-
Biggest QPF producer since...no idea! And it happened when one of the coldest airmasses in recent memory decided to make itself known. We lucked out big time!
-
Thanks. Funny enough, I just measured 7" of thick, compacted goodness (my 6.5" was a guesstimate). Wild.
-
Question: If I measured 5" of snow before the flip, then measured 4.5" of sleet, that's a total of 9.5" even if I only measure 6.5" after the precip ends, right?

Who is Uccenelli?

That last image is the eyebrow-raising one. A really nice cluster of lows off the Delmarva and a tight gradient. I'll take it.

B...b...b...but I thought the Euro never makes big changes from one run to the next! Been sitting here the last 3-4 runs wondering if what the GFS was smoking 24-36 hours ago would be on sale again. Looks like maybe it is.
-
We only got about 5" of snow (maybe slightly less) in the early thump, but we've had to have gotten like 1.5" of QPF as sleet. It's just been relentless.

Currently 23, which is the high here in Burke for the day. Still sleeting. i haven’t made a serious measurement, to be honest, but sleet has been ongoing for 10 hours now and we have probably had 4” of sleet in that time (compaction doesn’t help, of course). A good way to determine the impact is the piles I just shoveled…they rival any of the piles I’ve made outside of our biggest storms since 2009. Really Impressive.
-
I walked outside like 10 minutes ago and there f’ing CHUNKS of sleet coming with diminished visibility. I’m guessing that there are small flakes/needles in there, which is bringing the viz down and helping with accumulation just a bit.
-
Dude…it’s sleeting so hard that you can’t even tell if there’s snow mixed in.
-
I’m honestly not sure how much sleet I’ve gotten here in Burke, but it has to be over 1” at this point. It’s been sleet since like 7:30. 17° and f*cking pounding sleet for hours
-
It’s sleeting.

Maestro wants in on some of that. It's cold. 18F in Burke.
-
Eisfest -> ski trip -> coastal I’d take that and not care a damn about what happens the rest of the season.

Mixing sucks, and I don’t need anyone telling me that I should be happy that it’s going to sleet (and maybe freezing rain) with temps in the low 29s. You like it? Fine. I don’t. -

Wondering if this storm is going to ultimately have the lowest tracking/posting to snowfall ratio ever. -

Last January will have been much more fun for MBY if things go as now expected. -

100% OK with that run. We get smoked one run, we whiff well south and east on another…yeah, that works for now.
