    were any of you guys around for December 1992? I have a really tough time believing this could ever be as bad as that, we had hurricane force gusts for 3 days and round the clock news coverage for three days on the major networks (imagine that!) with large parts of Brooklyn, Queens and coastal New Jersey underwater and massive evacuations going on.

    that was the strongest wind gust recorded at NYC ever....78 mph on 12/2/74? what about Hazel and its 113 mph? That was at the Battery out of the south wasn't it? Do you have the highest winds reported at the various stations? I think Sandy holds JFK, EWR and LGA records though not sure. Dec 1992 hit 78 at LGA and Mar 2010 hit 80 at JFK just going by memory. Out of all of the above Dec 1992 caused the most damage (and it was the most widespread)....3 days of horrendousness lol

    also big snows in December have staying power because of low sun angle and short days. as long as it doesn't rain lol

    Chris was that a greater event than Dec 1992? Weren't a lot of our surge records before Sandy from Dec 1992?

    I'm not sure it will be the highest *ever* recorded in that time period- that seems dubious to me. In the Euro forecast they are talking about 75 mph wind gusts both here on Long Island AND in NE PA in the Poconos, which would be amazing. But still this storm wouldn't be anything like what the amazing December 1992 noreaster was. That one set the bar (and not just for December). I dont think this could come close to matching that.

    12/92 and 3/10....both near 80 mph....I dont think this could match either of those

    thats why many are gungho on the first third of January, there are plenty of historic examples to choose from

    sounds like one of those typical 80s storms where Monmouth jackpotted on 2/25..do you have numbers for JFK from that storm? I would expect something like 4"?

    did you get to see it later? it was supposed to be clear tonight, no idea where these nonsense clouds came from, there isn't even a storm nearby

    Yep and even this Jupiter/Saturn conjunction happens every 20 years but we haven't seen the last few "great" ones because they happened during daylight.
