    Right and ironically, I believe Hazel had the strongest winds (it made landfall in the SE and cut west of us.) Carol was the only one that made LF on Long Island, while Edna clipped Cape Cod. Interesting that 1954 was the year before the 11 yr cyclic peak summer of 1955 and we're in the same spot again this year.

    wow the 1950s to 1960 were a tropical "paradise" around here- didn't one of those years have three TC's hit the northeast? Was that the same year that Carol happened?

    this is a large sized storm, but not strong- as of yet. It seems like the large storms that aren't very strong are the ones that get least disrupted by land.

    Wow very close to the top, I didn't realize it was that close. It makes me wonder how much hotter next summer's going to be, at the peak of the 11 year cycle.....

    wow so close to an 80 avg! This is the first time JFK has had a 79+ avg temp for July without any 100 degree days! Will NYC make it to an 80 avg this July, Chris? I think NYC hit 90 today but not JFK? Do you have any records for JFK most number of 90 degree days per month? Are July 2010, July 1999 and July 1993 at the top of their list?

    Besides 1938 what were the other majors that hit Long Island or NYC? 1944? Carol? Donna? Maybe that 1821 hurricane? I cant think of any others.

    it's ironic because Gloria was mapped out to be a 130 mph borderline Cat 4 when it was abreast of ACY- that was obviously not right.

    1999 had one of our hottest Julys. I'd think that 1993 would also be on this list- July 1993 and July 1999 were the only months when NYC reached 90 degrees 20x in a month. Weird that 2010 isn't on this list too.

    I looked back at number of 90 degree days and we haven't been having that many since 2014 or so. I think the most we had in one year was 20 and all the others were in the teens. This is a florida kind of climate, they dont hit 100 there much either.

    thats correct, this is a typical path where NYC and western Nassau dont get much in the way of wind effects.....we do get heavier rain, which is typically about 100 miles west of the center track, but the winds typically arent any stronger than what you'd normally see from a noreaster.

    right and it wasn't a tropical cyclone up here, that's why we didn't have any tropical cyclone watches or warnings.

    NY just passed some of the stiffest drinking water regulations in the country- now applying these regulations to 1,4 Dioxine to Trace amounts (it's a cleaning chemical found in water on Long Island) using a UV cleaning system and using a carbon filtration system to remove PFOA/PFOS....... the new regs will cost $700 million but are worth it for cleaner water. Town of Hempstead is suing Dow for the chemical dump...the extra cost should be passed onto them.

    I dont take these things seriously 5-7 days out but for some reason the mets on WABC have been barking about an "east coast hit" since this morning.

    I just hope we dont go all Florida summer weather and its always humid and in the 90s and we dont ever hit 100. I liked those summers more (91,93,99, 2010, 2011), not the yucky Florida summers we now have.

    the high was 95 here, two degrees below last Monday when we hit 97. I love the low humidity though.

    Chris, whats the record for max SST in our area? I recall seeing 85 degree SST off the Jersey Shore in July 1993, never saw anything that high again.
