Yep that 130 degree temp will be the only verified 130 degree temp in recorded history..... wow looks like 1993 was a historically hot summer both for Death Valley and for the east coast- that's a rarity! -

I take it that streak of 70+ lows at LGA has come to an end too, as well as the streak of 55+ lows at MPO. Not sure if the JFK streak is over? Don do you have any rainfall totals or highest wind gusts from yesterday's "noreaster"? Also I heard that parts of our area only made it into the 60s for highs? -
Chris, Death Valley recorded the first 130 degree temp in the shade in modern history......and if verified, it will be the first verified 130 degree temp ever recorded (all the ones before are being challenged because no other nearby location was nearly as hot.) While, at the same time, there was a unique severe thunderstorm and heavy rain going on in SF.......
-
also those PPE need to be properly disposed of after use, otherwise they just add to the risk
-
How the heck do you get severe thunderstorms and heavy rain in SF while Death Valley does this- I heard that Death Valley hit 130 degrees?! It's the first 130 degree temp in the modern era and if verified it will be the ONLY 130 degree temp ever recorded in the shade!

Good to see we wont get 50" of rain. The average rainfall should be between 40-45 inches, and I say "should" because that's what it was for most of NYC's recorded history before this dreaded wet pattern began a decade ago. -

The first year I started watching the Perseid meteor shower was 1986 and the ironic thing was that was the most comfortable weather I remember having to watch it- in the last 35 or so years it has never been as cool with the skies so clear....you can double check this Uncle, I think the temps were either in the low 50s or the upper 40s with crystal clear skies through the period.....look up the lows from Aug 11 to Aug 14, that's when I watched them. -

wow both streaks of 40+ days! It feels like just yesterday it was snowing in May lol. I also remember we had some really cool nights in June, I guess that was just before this streak started? -

we need a way to relocate our humidity to the west where they are fighting fires. They need humid air, we dont. -

Yeah trust me it felt like traversing across more than two climate zones on the drive from the Poconos to Long Island. The change was very noticeable when I entered NJ. It felt like someone mugged me. -

the humidity is unbearable, this area feels like a tropical rain forest, let alone the "subtropical" designation we now have. -
looks like most of the damage was corn damage? I respect what farmers do for a living, but if that corn was used to make high fructose corn syrup then good riddance.

Well to be fair....yes particles can get through a face covering, but it's not like they have a zero impact. There was a simulation I saw where an ordinary face covering was used and it was found that whereas an uncovered face can transmit droplets 8 ft during a cough or a sneeze, with a face covering that's cut down to around 6 inches. Hence the reason why the best way to go about it is to couple a face covering with physical distancing. And it's a lot easier to achieve a safe physical distance with a face covering than without. Logically, this makes sense too. Think of what it sounds like when you talk through a face covering. Your voice becomes muffled and you have to talk louder right? That's the face covering having an effect. And virus particles travel at way less than the speed of sound and are much easier to filter than sound is.

How long do you plan to be around though? I'd put the hard limit at around 2050 which I'm sure 90% of coastal residents living near sea level will have experienced it in some way, shape or form.

It's in Bear Creek, about halfway between Allentown and Mt Pocono. I wrote up a report about what I saw: I noticed something strange with this shower that I hadn't noticed in others. Most of the time, I watch meteor showers at a sea level location on Long Island. But this time, I decided to do it at a less light polluted place, in the Poconos Mtns, about 2,000 ft above sea level. I didn't see a lot of meteors, but the ones I did see were very bright, as bright as Venus or even a little brighter. I saw about 10 of these per hour the night before the peak and the night of the peak. Here is what was really unusual- they seemed really low, maybe only a couple of hundred feet above the trees (?) That is just an estimate. But two of them I know for sure really seemed like they were only a little above the roof of my house.....and one of them changed color from golden to green to orange to red and I heard a sound at the end of the flash- it sounded like- as best I can describe it- like the sound of a pebble hitting a hard surface? I have never seen or heard of anything like this before! Meanwhile, in the background sky, just at the limit of visibility there was a near constant flashing and a sensation of the sky moving (?)- I suspect this was the vast majority of meteors, just at the limit of naked eye visibility? Whatever it was it was below the brightness of the Milky Way, which I can clearly see from this location (limiting magnitude about 6.5) -
I think the major news over the upcoming decade will be the rapid melting in Antarctica.

They might say that but we're tinkering with nature already. Also, we're going to be tinkering with other planets anyway, like Mars. The only real way to fix something bad we've done is to neutralize it by doing something good. Doing "something good" also consists of prosecuting the fossil fuel industry, imprisoning the people who run those companies and fining them to bankruptcy and seizing all their assets, and yes this needs to be done on a worldwide level. I'm sure by now you've read about how they've been going after lawyers who file lawsuits against them on behalf of third world nations where they cause more pollution and death than anywhere else.

Thanks Uncle, this is a wealth of info! On a note about a different kind of storm, the Perseids are really good tonight! Around 11 PM I saw a few really bright ones that seemed to pass just over my house! One really notable one that changed color from golden to red and after it streaked across really low I heard a sound, almost like the sound of a pebble hitting something? Would that be a bolide? How are the sky conditions over there? I'm still in the Poconos for a couple more days. -

Yeah as we were trying to tell someone the other day, FRG and ISP aren't on the beach or even the south shore lol. They have more of an inland feel, especially in the summer. -

it's amazing that even coastal locations to our NE can see higher numbers like that....I think the last time before this that PVD hit 100 was the widespread extreme heat of July 2011. We were all well over 100 on that day!
