That's awesome Carlisle, sounds like you're having an incredible time!  I always tell people you have to get to Alaska at least once, truly unspeakable levels of beauty.  How cool is Whittier, with the old one lane rail cave being the only way in or out of the town!?  I remember feeling like we were in another world when we came out on the other side with the Caribbean-like turquois waters and the glaciers seemingly emanating right out from the water.  If you get a chance, on the way to or from Denali hit up the small touristy village of Talkeetna, cool place.  You can walk down to the river and get some incredible views of Denali towering over the landscape even though it's like 60 miles away.  The daylight is always wild and it's not like it gets totally dark after sunset haha.  I remember coming out of the bars at like 2am with my wife and it was still plenty light out, like a civil twilight.  Sounds like you are getting nice classic Alaska weather, whereas when we were there they were having a record heat wave in which Anchorage hit 90 for the first time in its history.  I would much rather have what you're having ha.  Anyway, enjoy the rest of your trip and feel free to stop back in and let us know how things are going.  Cheers!

Oh, almost forgot, Hatcher Pass is a place well worth stopping between Anchorage and Talkeetna.  You can swim in a fresh mountain top lake one minute and then just a few steps away play in some snow, stunning.

Alaska is incredible - fortunate that my parents used to live there, and I had a chance to go a few times. :)  On my last trip, it was in the 60s in Anchorage, but over 80 up in Healy outside of Denali National Park. My personal favorite place though is Seward - sitting along the Pacific, taking in the salt air like you would at any east coast beach, while being surrounded by snow-capped mountains was...exhilarating. That's a combo you can't experience in too many places in the U.S.

Welp I got screwed, some brief intense wind gusts but only scattered big drops. Don’t even need to check the gauge to know it’s shy of .01” ugh.

Fail me. Just as it looked like the line was congealing just to my west, it abruptly split again. I did not record a single drop of rain. :(

haha you know you're a hardcore weather enthusiast when you have a backup station at the ready.

What he is not saying, hidden in the grammar, is that he has 3 weather stations.  He is down to his second backup.

My 2nd backup is my $4 thermometer mounted on my kitchen window combined with my $7 garden rain gauge. :)

Euro has the typical "just when you thought it was safe to go you forgot an ULL was spinning over you" rains for Saturday.  Mostly afternoon.  Sunday looks fairly dry. Temps 70's on Sat and Upper 70's to low 80's Sunday.

CTP seems to be keying on that feature for Saturday...discussion this morning centered on numerous showers around on Saturday PM.

I'm now at 99 lads, with a dew of 70 brings me to 106 heat index!  Can I do the triple digit dance!?  I see the PA Turnpike sensor on the Susquehanna River Bridge at milepost 245.7 hit 100 at 2:03 PM, first semi "official" reading I've seen in the keystone state in the triples.

My 2nd, backup weather station is showing 98.8 (99) here as well. Good to see that my backup is pulling it's own weight. :)

Yep, said hurricane then slowly runs up the east coast into the Mid-Atlantic before going out to sea. Meanwhile, a ridge builds into the plains and eventually sends temps in the Dakotas toward 120, but a corresponding weak trough develops for us.

Looks like the Pittsburgh area is getting hit pretty hard right now.

So you’d recommend for someone in the market for a weather station?

i need a new one as well. I'll check this brand out. I'd like to have a new one up and running before winter

Spend some time and read reviews - most are positive on the Ambient stations. Personally, the price point is it's most attractive selling point. I really don't need a $500 investment when I can get "the basics" for a third of the cost.

My wife would divorce me if I spent a bunch of money on a weather station, so I’m shopping on a budget. LOL.

My wife pays zero attention to my weather antics, but she does support me investing some time and money into my obsession. Her most uttered line over the past 10 years has been "well...what are you and your fellow weenies up to today?" :)

Yes - if you're shopping on somewhat of a budget. For what I paid, I'm very pleased. Temp, dewpoint, humidity, pressure, rainfall has been very accurate. Ambient stations start at about $150. Just make sure to mount it as far from buildings as possible, and try to mount it high. Mine is at about 15', it really should be at least 30' if you're looking for accurate wind measurements.

I think (?) our friend @Voyager might have an Ambient stations as well...

The trend for any meaningful rain is rapidly going away, which really really really sucks.

1" is my bar - I don't need 4-6" of rain to be satisfied. If we can get an inch, perhaps a little more, I'd be thrilled. Though there is some cause for concern that at least some areas might not get that.

Yes I've noticed that, a bit surprising in that my low location off the ridge line usually has me as one of the hotter spots around, but perhaps you get a bit of UHI to offset that?  Not sure how "downtown" you really are ha.

I'll do my best to support you during these difficult times but I must admit I don't love my current station.  It's one of those La Crosse models that looks cute but isn't great for tracking data.  Heck, I still haven't figured out how it keeps its high/low temps, seems to only go back a few hours when doing so.  Basically, I have to keep pretty good tabs on it to get accurate readings.  Also, in the interest of full disclosure, during these long-path sun days in the dead of summer my sensor gets some direct sun during the early morning and late evening hours that causes it to read high during those times, particularly the morning where I basically have to ignore the temps for an hour or two.  This despite being stationed on the north side of my house and of course having the housing piece around it that is supposed to prevent that, but naturally doesn't fully do so.  I really liked my old station that tracked data better and measured to the tenth of the degree, even though the display wasn't "pretty" ha, but it took a crap after years of service and in a pinch I got one of the trendy Amazon recommended ones.  I have a real nice one that was gifted to me in the basement (brand name eludes me at the moment) that I'm waiting to set up until we move to a new location.  I've said too much.....

I have an Ambient Weather Station - not the most high tech nor super expensive (about $200 for my model) but it has been extremely accurate, save for wind. And that is on me, because I didn't mount it high enough nor far enough away from my house to get accurate wind measurements. Overall though, I've been super pleased with my station!

It's not your fault.  It's like me mentioning WGAL future radar.  LOL.  But my point was it would be better for verbiage and guidance in word form otherwise the WPC maps just look like qpf maps from the latest model runs.   The maps we post are just a piece of the puzzle.

    Preach it!

By the way, there is a lot of high level cloudiness over here already. Sun is filtered out pretty good at this moment.
