#12 on the year - pretty crazy
-
that is a level of cold that is basically impossible to imagine
-
we were actually in Baltimore during that 1994 cold outbreak. It basically never got above zero on the drive there from VA - Staunton had a low near -20F that morning. The Inner Harbor was frozen solid lol.
-
94 probably, right?

"We sent three reporters to Ulaanbaatar to find out!"

when you're 5 and 8 you sometimes say "f it"

drought begets drought
-
1.04" in upper NW.
-
yup.
-
mean temps in the mid 30s is not "very cold for our area by any historical standard" in December. DCA finished the weak with a -7.5F departure, while IAD was -9.1F. Yes, that's cold. It's not earth shattering.
-
lol - oh man, yeah I guess nothing is happening since your little station tied a record low. Oh wait

this is the Stuarts Draft area in Augusta County tonight:

The default now is warm. Sure, we will get cold. It's going to snow again. But it's far more fleeting than it was when we were kids (at least around here), and before long it reverts to the default: warm. At least empirically, it seems something has flipped in the past 5 years or so. The number of nights at or below freezing has fallen off a cliff. We don't set record lows anymore. Event his recent cold shot, while cold, wasn't anything to write home about. Lows in the teens and 20s with highs in the 30s and 40s were commonplace not too long ago at this time of year. One of the local news mets was talking about how this was the coldest first week of Dec since 2005. But it was the fifth coldest first week since 2000. So, uh, prior to 2005 it seems practically every year was colder.

lol DCA hit 69F (66 here in upper NW). We do this with ease now.
-
Cold, but honestly these are all above freezing (and DC at 37F).
-
palm tress for Christmas in Fargo.
-
dude you can't bring up that god-awful "storm" - you know this.
-
yep - DCA is like Central Park (KNYC). It takes the cold air advection to really cool it down. Of course, now that the wind is lighter the urban areas are holding steady (27F here in Tenleytown, 30F at DCA).
-
DCA 47/27 on the day. Despite the cold temps, we still haven't had a day with the daily avg at or below freezing.
-
lol but you're scared to go to the city?
-
DCA finally got below 30 (low of 27F).
-
November 2024 was DCA's warmest on record.
-
folks are just gonna have to get accustomed to the fact that we'll hit the 60s a lot in winter going forward. doesn't mean we won't get cold and snowy periods as well.
-
Low of 30F again at DCA. 27F here in the alpine areas of the District. I have noticed that, in the absence of a northerly wind, the temp basically bottoms out around 1:00 to 1:30am and is pretty steady until sunrise.

snow used to be fairly common in December west of 95 / along the I-81 corridor.
