  1. Didn't even realize it was going to cool off so much tomorrow. Our forecast is for a high of 59 and a low of 38... Which will mean upper 20s at my spot if we radiate (yesterday's 31.6 was a forecasted low of 41). Kill it all.

Actually surprised by how little damage the frost did. I would not even think it happened had I not seen it first hand. But I guess plants are pretty hardened at this point.

Yeah, there’s New England winter, then there’s NNE winter, then there’s NNNE/microclimate/mountains winter.  We’re not in an especially hefty snowpack preservation spot for around here, and even we average close to 5 months with snow on the ground each winter.  It’s not that we don’t have nice summers (I guess unless you want lots of heat and humidity), but you really want to have an interest in cold weather or “weather-independent” activities or the winters would probably seem interminable.

That definitely describes us. Retention is not that good - especially compared to Bartlett/Hart's Location just on the other side of the notch, but we have several more weeks of snow on the ground than they do thanks to the early season snow and the better retention later in the season, when they warm up much faster. Also, the radiational cooling can give some pretty extreme morning lows (I have seen more -30's since moving here than I care to count), but to be honest I'm not sure that the difference between -30 and -10 really matters. Till it's above 0, it's cold and I tend to avoid being outside too long.

Summer in my opinion is close to perfection. Warm during the day but not very hot, and get that sweater on at night. Just wish it weren't so short lived.

Dude, you guys are killing me. And I Dislike Nashville. Im trying to plan moving back. I will def chat with Alex.

I'm messaging you back right now! :)

It's funny, my sister said she would love the job but would NEVER even consider living somewhere where you get this much snow and cold. Which is kinda what prompted me to post something here!!! Where else can you find a bunch of awesome nuts who enjoy this kind of weather?

Granted, I'm pretty sure that as much as they love snow a majority of this board would not put up with our weather. It's a long relentless winter.

Diane,   seriously you should consider it.   They are growing so rapidly and Alex is a great guy!  I bet something could be worked out and we need another poster in the NNE group

I would too. Alex seems like someone I could work for too

Aww you guys are too nice. I actually thought about her - we had chatted before she left but I'm not sure she's interested in moving back up. Diane definitely let me know if interested!

  5. Hey this is a LONG shot but worth mentioning. If anyone is interested, we are looking for a receptionist/real estate assistant for our new location right at the base of the ski resort. Aside from receptionist, the main role is to assist with customer emails, phone calls, answer basic questions about our condos, ordering supplies and a variety of administrative tasks. With time (or if we get a more proficient candidate) would also like to assist with payroll, owner payments and reports, and some basic bookkeeping. We have been growing rapidly (from 5 to just about 40 units in less than 2 years), and the job has a lot of upside potential for the right candidate as we continue to grow. Pay is competitive (start at $15/hr) with 1 week off, fully paid medical and dental, and as a side perk we get $10 lift tickets on weekdays. Weekend work is required. Could be a good opportunity for someone with the right skills/interest looking to move up here and enjoy our weather extremes. :)

That's impressive.  Even in Fort Kent my earliest was August 24.  Of course, I'm not sure whether the frost of July 31, 1978 was my earliest or my latest.  :o   Set back my pumpkin patch and killed beans in our next door neighbor's garden, maybe 50 feet from our pumpkins.

Yes that was my last year trying to grow tomatoes. I had cherry tomatoes JUST starting to turn and poom - gone. Then of course it warmed up and stayed warm for quite a while after that, but not enough for them to recover.

Yeah you definitely have an extreme rad site.  You make MVL here next to me seem like a SNE site, lol.

Lol that's what North Conway feels like now. When I first started coming up I had a house in Bartlett and at that time it felt like Scandinavia

Wow, congrats! 9/10 is not at all early for your first subfreezing low there, correct? I recall you getting frost/freeze in June, July, and August in past years. You radiate really well.

49.1° F low here. It clouded up overnight, so not much drop. I can't radiate, but I've had lots of 40s at night and the leaves are definitely starting to turn. Low diurnal temperatures and CAD dominate here.

Yes We radiate like a mofo here, so this is not at all unusual. My kid goes to school in Whitefield and they're balmy compared to us lol, so pretty much on time. Earliest I've seen it was August 17 2 or 3 years ago.

Ha.   I also have chestnuts.  I had never had those before though as a kid there were some at my friends house.   We spent long hours throwing them at each other.  Since you didn't need to make them, it was a much more rapid fire war than a snowball fight.

Lol. We used to go chestnut picking a lot when I was a kid in italy. There are entire forests there of chestnut trees. Prickly but fun

Good question. Should probably time it with a Noreaster with 12" upslope on the back side emoji4.png

    Whats the sqft?

About 3200 sf (I believe) with the finished basement, 5 bedrooms.

yeah love the crib Alex. That’s my type of place. Looks amazing.

Thanks! The landscaper is doing an awesome job too (work in progress). Lots of rocks and boulders, a large patio with log pergola, firepit and a big waterfall/pond. Very mountain-y

Gorgeous place!  However, having heated mostly with wood for decades, I can't imagine not having a woodstove in the north country, preferably on an inside wall (unlike our current place with stove on outside wall) so the chimney gives heat to the house all the way to the roofline.  Some folks, my wife included, would rather not see firewood hauled into a brand new home.

we're going with an RSF fireplace, which gives out up to 70,000 BTUS and has a heat distribution system that can bring heat into the finished basement as well (it can even be ducted into the HVAC). So it's a bit of a combo between a fireplace and a stove

Makes me miss my wood stove. Moved into my new house (picture attached) and we are putting in a heating fireplace but they start on Tuesday

Alex, nice place man. When's the party?
