I just happen to see that Loon is closed.  On their website, they said thank you for a great season.  202" of snow.  How can this be?  Only 30 miles north of me, double my amount of 100"  and they get no big upslope?

Alex at 177" and he is in a much better area,  higher in elevation, gets upslope and is further north.  What did Bretton Woods report this season?

Okay a couple of feet of an exaggeration but this seems ridiculous,  or is it?

Bretton Woods reported 202-244. Loon should definitely be lower. My total is a bit higher than 177 - I haven't updated in a while but certainly lower than 200.

Nice dude!  Your kids have no idea how lucky they will be to have a ski area for a neighbor.

Haha yeah I hope they will appreciate it. Tough to tell. It's rural here, no doubt. Luckily because of the demographics of this specific resort there's also a lot of VERY successful people around, and because of our job most of the people we hang out with are CEOs and entrepreneurs. But it's an island surrounded by some pretty extreme poverty and apathy. Still, I think it's a great place to raise a kid.

  3. Skiing was epic today! Resort closes tomorrow, but I'm assuming today will be my last day (at least at Bretton Woods).

The glades STILL skied well. They've been open non stop since before Thanksgiving. That's rather remarkable.

Yeah Gene this is the first true spring day up here I think.  Like full on shorts and t-shirt weather.

Snow is melting with a purpose now.

We are up to 64 now and it's incredible. The snow is just sizzling away. Lawn is showing up. Still a foot at the stake but that's because it's sheltered.

Watching carefully the forecast for Monday. Last time we flooded it was due to 5-7" of rain in about 8 hours and it was a true flash flood - came and went in about 2 hours. The Ammo (which my house is on) starts at Lakes of The Clouds, just up the mountain, so the river level responds very quickly in both directions. Forecasts so far keep it to minor flooding at worst, which is a good 3 feet lower than needed for trouble. Keeping fingers crossed and duct tape handy. :)

  5. I posted it in the other thread but aside from the temperature, the skiing today was outstanding. Firm surface underneath with a few inches of powder on top. Even the glades skied nicely. Incredible that the glades have been open non stop since November

hey do you serve drinks in the summer at your outdoor "bar"?

Haha not personally... but renters certainly do! That house that the camera is on is a full time rental. I live on the same property, and I'm building a new house on the same lot.

In other news, it's dumping snow right now. Really low visibility.

He is in a tough spot though. Edge of the foothills, models love to be too cold there (especially aloft). It's easy to keep it below freezing at the surface, but easier to mix or get poor ratios than you think. But nobody is in a tougher spot than @alex. We just can't capture the terrain changes with our resolution.

Annoying as it is, I can see how impossible that would be. Take yesterday... You would have to be able to capture the 15 degrees variations I saw driving around a 30 mile loop. It would require a ridiculous amount of data

Strong NE wind causing downslope off of Lafeyette?  Temperature continues to fall here.  30.3F light snow

Definitely a possibility. Love the mountains and their microclimates.

Back home. Down to 29 with a few snowflakes and freezing drizzle

  9. To each his own. I enjoy cold summer nights and warm but not hot days. When I lived in Boston I always looked forward to the few chilly nights we got. The short growing season is definitely a negative, and many things just don't grow well even with nightime temps going into the 40s let alone frost, which as @dendrite mentioned can happen any time of the year (although so far since moving here we've never had frost in July, but we've had 30's every month).

The one thing that stands out at your location is the radiational cooling.  I have had  5-7 nights below 0F.  You must have dozens.  So at your 1500 ft location you get the low high temps and the insane radiational cold nights being in the valley next to the river.  Add to that the upslope 150" snow totals you have the ultimate weenie spot of everyone on the boards if you factor in  cold and snow combined.  You sure picked a good spot to satisfy your craving of real winters when you moved up from Metro Boston.  I'm sure you can do without the extreme cold, however, that gets old real quick

The radiational cooling is perhaps my least favorite aspect of living here. Mornings can be just brutal. I've never counted but I feel it's rare to have clear skies in the winter and not have negative lows. Someone can look at my weather station records and figure out how often it actually happens. :) But either way it's a lot more than I like!

In the summer though it's pretty awesome. I love those chilly summer mornings, where it's in the 40s when you wake up and 70s a few hours later.

Yea you really need to love the winter to live out there. Not a big distance as the crow flies, but big difference in terms of climo. An approximation I use is 200-250 miles north per every thousand feet in elevation. Bridgewater NH might as well be southern Quebec.

I'm at 1500 ft and not sure how many miles North of Bridgewater so by those metrics essentially the Arctic Circle. :P

It's certainly tough to be up here and not like winter, but summers are awesome too. They just happen to be rather short.

Some times living up here sucks.  So many days of mountain cloudiness.  While it clears out on the coastal plain with downslope off the highlands to the north we stay cloudy and so much cooler.  Dividing line many times is around Concord NH.

Finally, a few blue patches appearing while 95% of the NE board are enjoying a nice spring day.  Monday looks awful.  If its going to be in the 30's with cold rain it might as well snow

    Skiing is great though :)

It's a lock!  18Z GFS gives all of us 12-36" of snow next week.

Somebody please unplug it. Although that would put me over 200" and that's kinda cool. #notgonnahappen
