Had a snow shower pass through but rates weren’t enough to overcome the 38° temps.

Is it still 50 in Hagerstown? Looks like dewpoints are dropping places where the wind already shifted NW.
I’m a few miles southwest of Hagerstown. Wind has shifted to the NW and is picking up. 48° now, down from a high of 52. DP is 47. Still raining with 0.55” in the bucket.

It doesn't even show snow until it hits Canada, I understand its a torched pattern but seeing rain into southern Canada on the backside of a nor easter just feels wrong.
Like I said its just an example of something pointed out during last years winter. Enough individual events line up to cause trends, as winter goes on we (should) hopefully see less of this but if we don't then prob not a great sign. Doubt thats what will happen but just concerns me about the future in general because eventually storms like this will become the far more likely if not the norm.
I’m 60 years old and I’ve seen countless storms like this in mid December. It’s a product of the pattern. I don’t think you should read too much more into it than that.

If the Washington-Jefferson snowstorm of January 1772 happened today, it would produce major urban and small stream flooding.

I’ve seen amazing storms and winters in this “climate change era”bad winters have always been with us..even before this recent cycle of warmingI had 4” of snow on October 29, 2012 and 3” on April 18, 2022. How much more warming has to happen to turn those events into rain storms ?
-
So, because the average temperature has increased by a couple of degrees over the past half-century we need to add those same couple of degrees to each discrete event from years past ?

If you look at recent mod to super Ninos that didn’t give us a MECS or better, it’s mostly not because storms of that magnitude didn’t occur, it’s that they gave us rain or mixed precip.
If you look at H5 and surface evolutions of 2-3 storms in 97-98, you’d get weak in the knees. Except it was 40F at the surface out past Hagerstown.
Having spent that winter in PG County, I was surprised when I moved to this area to discover that Martinsburg actually recorded a 20” winter. A heavy snow in late December was the one real “clean” event, and other times there were reports like 5” of snow out of 2.5” of precip.
At least the folks measuring were doing their diligence.

Not if it melts away in 3 days.
Lol. I measured 35.3” in that storm. Snow stayed on the ground for more than two weeks.. even after a week, I still had more than a foot of snow depth.

This board would implode with a late start like 65-66.
0.2" through January 25th. Then an 8-day period of three storms totaling 23" in late Jan/early Feb. Followed by a sloppy 5" storm in late Feb.
The Jan 29-30, 1966 storm does look like it was fun, though. 13.8" with highs of 16 and 17 degrees.
All stats from DCA.
That 1/29-30 storm is one I’ve always regretted missing. Wasn’t quite 3 years old at the time. But in conversations over the years with folks from suburban Maryland, they described it as a pretty fierce storm with a combination of frigid temps, heavy snow, strong winds and exceptionally high drifts.

Already down to 28°. Forecast low is 24. I guess clouds come in later ?

2.67” was my largest one-day total here since 9/2/2021

1.25”. Temp is up to 39

Steady rain at 37°. Just hit 0.25” for the morning so far.
Edited: lost another 2 degrees in the past hour. Now down to 35 at noon.

If I went back further 1958 and 1966 would be in my analogs.
1965 was dry leading in, like this year. Probably most similar in terms of precip of all your analogs preceding the cold season.

For BWI, first 1" or more happened December 14, 1995, 1.0", December 5, 2002, 7.5", and December 5, 2009, 1".
You can go to the NowData for DCA if you want.
Surprised neither of those events in November 1995 amounted to an inch at BWI. Thought I remembered more snow than that when I was living in that area.

Yikes, don't think I have logged in since last spring. Just saw some weather headlines about fire danger back east. Made a quick trip to Virginia to visit family in late July and it seemed like a dry summer there. I did not realize it was one of the worst! Good luck for a wet and snowy winter!
Thanks! Good to see you posting. Hope you and the family are well.
