Stinker of a winter
It’s my 16th winter at this location. Only two of those winters had less snowfall than this year.

Ugh. Getting tired of this NW cutoff
I think the last time DCA measured more snowfall than I did in my yard for a full season was 2008-09. It happens, but not very often.

Current LWX forecast for Sunday here is partly sunny with a high of 34. Hoping the models showing a snowstorm start to gain more support.

I’m at 35% of annual snowfall heading into February. It’s snowed three times this winter, with one of those not accumulating. Nice cold weather the past 4 weeks, but not much in the way of results here.
Big early February rain storm just beginning.- 1

Would normally be excited by freezing rain. But I have a very important appointment Friday in Frederick and really don’t want a cancellation. So, expect ice.

January monthly temp departures:

BWI -2.0
IAD -2.5
MRB -4.0

I dated a woman who was conceived during the 1966 blizzard lol.
Seeing photos of the insane drifts in Maryland, it’s one of the storms that I regret missing, as I was not quite 3 years old and have no recollection of it.

Have had 4 hours of a steady light snow here at 32° with no accumulation. The breeze is stirring and is now out of the north, so not sure how much will be left as temps and darkness fall.

Getting a nice snow shower here. Visibility around 1 mile. 32°.
Midday sun angle doing a number also, but the snow and ice on the ground is freshening up nicely.

I've always been curious about people who chase. Would you designate a certain amount of days you'd be okay with being stuck wherever you go?
I ask because I have three days off from work starting on Saturday, and I'm partially considering driving to the coast if it looks much better setup, but if they do get buried, I'd have the concern of being stuck there.
I’ve chased snowstorms many times over the years and have never really been stranded for more than a day, or two at the most. I generally try to position near major highways, which is certainly easier if it’s a spot near the coast or near cities and not mountainous areas. I have a decent 4x4 truck and I carry most of the implements to dig out if necessary.
if it did end up being like that famous photo of the cars buried on the interstate in NE in ‘78, I guess life would just have to wait on me to return.

I typically won’t chase a storm if my yard is in line for any snow at all. But if the weekend storm is going to have me trying to scratch out an inch while any part of the east coast has blizzard conditions, I might have to reconsider that policy.

I remember that exact experience loading model runs before the Blizzard of 1996.

MRB is -2.8 for January so far. If it snows 0.5” here Friday, I’ll have a double-digit snowfall total for January. It’s been a pretty good winter month.

Been said time and time again - the on-land data sampling thing is mostly a thing of the past. Remote sensing has some a LONG way - the vast majority of waves/energy etc are sampled quite well by satellites.
Agreed, and yet we see it mentioned often in WFO forecast discussions.

With yesterday’s rainfall, Martinsburg may be able to record above-normal precipitation for the month of November for only the 3rd time in the past 16 years. Other years were 2011 and 2018.
