GFS close on the 4th but just misses the timing. Fun period coming up I think.
Then some front end action from an OV low on the 7th followed by freezing temperatures down to central FL. Good start to what looks like a wintry January.

High temp was 31. Dropping like a rock now with ideal radiational cooling conditions. Down to 22.

Gee, top analog 1985-01-21. Merely the day that RDU set it's all-time record low of an incredible -9 F. The height of the January 1985 polar outbreak.
Several of those analogs had historic cold snaps in the Mid-Atlantic. January 1970, 1977, 1981 (along with 1985.)

I gotta say that this December is more like the typical December I grew up with as a kid. Seasonably cold, gray, mostly wet, but sometimes flakes in the air. Some years we're good for a couple of inches, but nothing major. So this month has been more in line with that than the torchy ones we've been getting lately. But still not extraordinarily cold/BN. Just about near normal (but BN by today's climate standards).
It’s been a nice start to winter here. MRB is -2.6° for the month with only a few mild days so far. Should be at about -3.5° heading into Christmas Eve. Precip has been above normal and it’s already snowed a couple of inches. Happy to see the moisture showing up after such a dry year.

Snow showers for the last 30 minutes, with good enough rates to put down a decent dusting, even with a temp of 34°.

Some grains of snow are beginning to reach the ground here. 34°.

I’m liking this from LWX’s afternoon discussion:
Notably, 12z guidance has begun to hint at a local maximum 12z to 18z Friday for portions of the eastern WV panhandle and western MD especially. Most likely totals during that period for there would be up to 1.5". There is still some spread in the guidance regarding this feature.

Same here. Better rates too, which is allowing the ground to whiten nicely now. 32 degrees.

Dulles has had 18 January storms of 6”+ since 1964. Eight of those came in 4 winters (2 each in 1966, 1987, 1996 and 2000.)
