Pittsburgh Summer? 2025

On the topic of 90 degree days, that 19th century Pittsburgh heat island must have been insane. Why so many more than Morgantown? Wow!

According to this, from 1880-1882, Pittsburgh had 105 days at or above 90F, while Morgantown had either 8 or 4, with only a handful of missing days?

Morgantown did later go through its own heat island period for a time in the next decade, where it flipped the script and became a powerhouse of 90 degree days. In 1893, at the height of its ascent, it surpassed Pittsburgh by a whopping 35 days in that metric!

Enjoying the summer so far, it's been a great season for the pool this year. Warm water just about all summer (thanks to all the 90s). Pretty decent lightening show on the way to work this morning. Summer is cruising along. The older I get the less I look forward to the end of summer and fall and the start of Winter and he Holiday routine but don't worry I'll be in top form by November . This Farmers Almanac outlook would be sweet if it verified (probably as likely as the 384 GFS)

Looks awfully similar to their outlooks for 2022-2023 & 2023-2024. With that track record, I wouldn't put too much stock in it.

Although many of us saw rain today, PIT has so far seen just a trace. This ends the streak of completely rain-free days on the official record, but honestly I’m not sure measurable rain at the airport is anywhere near a sure bet this evening.

The airport ended up with 0.79", all coming in less than an hour. They had a nice cell, not much larger than the airport itself, pass right overhead. I only ended up with a few hundredths of an inch. :axe:

Just wanted to share this with you guys since the weather hasn't been all that active here except for the occasional storm. We do have a nasty hurricane out in the Atlantic, but it's going to mostly be a fish, with some wind impact on the east coast, but nothing here.

Anyway, being the weather nerd that I've always been, even as a kid, I had a watch as a kid that had a thermometer in it. It was a Casio watch from the 80s. I loved that watch. I felt like I had a little weather station on my wrist. It was way ahead of it's time back then. Well, I found this baby on Ebay in great shape and for a pretty reasonable price. Works great. I feel like a kid again. Lol OK, back to weather talk. Lol2c6f320192d889b0c43907849e48a6a1.jpg

Be interesting to see how cold we get on some of the colder nights in this pattern (tonight and/or Friday night in particular). The last time we got to 48 in August was 2014, the last time we got to 47 was 2013 and the last time we got to 46 was 1987. The lower end of that range is probably out of reach tonight, but could be in play Friday night. No records are likely in play, and in fact we have yet to set a record daily high or low in August this century.

46 this morning.

With rain chances officially done for the month, we will finish August with 4 days of measurable rainfall at PIT (and one of them had just 0.01”). This ties 1976 for 2nd fewest rainy days in August. There were 3 in 1881.

I'm still under 1/2 of an inch for the entire month.

After a generally hot and humid summer, August is closing out on significantly cooler than normal. August mean should drop around 0.9F with the last 3 days factored in, with the 3-month summer average dropping around 0.3F (0.9F/3).

Looking at some long-term "threaded" climate sites, PIT should finish around 73.9F, which would drop us from a 3-way tie for 11th (1877, 1880) to a 2-way tie for 16th place in the threaded record (1878).

At Wheeling, summer should finish around 73.4F, dropping from a 2-way tie for 5th (2010), down to 8th place. Note - lengthy gap here from the mid 50s to late 90s... not a whole lot of hot summers in that stretch but at least a couple are missing that can be seen in the PIT and MGW threads (e.g., 1991 & 1995).

Morgantown should finish around 73.9F, dropping from 7th place to a 3-way tie for 11th place (2005, 1991).

For the statewide averages, I expect Pennsylvania to check in around 67.9F for the month of August, and West Virginia around 70.0F, both of which are around 50th coldest August of record (since 1895). Meteorological summer should finish around 70.5F for Pennsylvania and 72.5F for West Virginia. That would finish up as 14th warmest for the State of Pennsylvania (since 1895) and tied for 7th warmest for West Virginia (since 1895), with 1901, 1949 & 1952. If anything, I think this projection might be slightly low for August but should be within about 0.1F of the final summer tally IMO, as I would have to be more than 0.3F off for August to be more than 0.1F off for the summer as a whole. Although the statewide numbers are so crowded that even a tenth of a degree can swing things a few places as evidenced by all the multi-year ties.
